Guilt?

If I could believe that in any small way I contributed to his resignation, I'd buy myself a steak tonight and eat it without salt because I'd be all the awesomesauce that steak could handle.

Something big is about to break in the scandal, IMO.

2013-02-12 10:24:01 AM
Did people really misconstrue the original release that said it was due to his diminishing strength? They never did say he was OMGSICK, just that he's... old. He's old and tired and can't be the Pope effectively enough.

The pope said Monday he is resigning "because of advanced age."That's right. We are living in a too advanced age for the pope.

He's not MY pope.   I didn't vote for him

I thought that the whole "health issues" thing was weird since they paraded the last pope around asleep and drooling on himself in his later days.

sure haven't: Did people really misconstrue the original release that said it was due to his diminishing strength? They never did say he was OMGSICK, just that he's... old. He's old and tired and can't be the Pope effectively enough.

Which is why all the other popes for the last 600 years stuck it out until they died.

Sorry.  Not buying it.

Eugenics?

If so, it'd be a rare duck that, in a position of power, would practice what he believes.

/sorry, heard a clip of him speaking yesterday on the radio
//reminded me of Dr. Strangelove, especially the scene at the end when they're essentially talking about eugenics, hiding in mine shafts until the radiation subsides

Have some respect, people. Wouldn't you want to resign when you feel like you can't work anymore?

What if you had to wear all those robes and big pointy hats all day, you would probably at some point say, I've had enough.  I am going to the monastery next door with a nice Chianti

He is a scumbag who threatened excommunication for anyone who assisted the investigation of child rape. He is beyond respect, as is the institution he used to lead.

How the hell can you be too old for a job where your entire actual duties consist of sitting and waving?

It's not like he even has to say mass anymore.  He just throws happy blessing waves at the people who are actually doing all of the work and sometimes gets wheeled out to wheeze some hollow pre-written statements in Latin.

Some shiat is going to hit the fan soon, for sure.

Not buying it either.  I like to think its all the guilt for protecting pedophiles for all those years finally weighed down on him.  But I'm not optimistic on that either.

If in fact is he stepping down because he feels he can't do the job properly anymore, I give him major respect. It takes a decent man to actually give up power for the greater good.

In reality, I'm with the many who think he's probably getting out before something bad happens.

bartink: Something big is about to break in the scandal, IMO.

Yeah the health thing has been bullshiat.  For 600 years all the popes have stuck around until they kicked the bucket, I assumed the Vatican had a papal babysitter who kept the Pope busy while some Cardinals ran the place.  Ratzinger himself was supposedly doing a lot of the grunt work when John Paul was checking out IIRC.

It's either a scandal is coming or Ratzinger had some honest moment of introspection, realized he'd done a terrible job with the child rape coverup, and this is his way of falling on his sword.

He's saying he's resigning because he's spiritually not strong enough to lead.  Which really does make one wonder what's coming down the pike that we don't know about yet.

I hope they pick an old white guy to be the next pope.  That's what the world could use.

Bonus if he's an old Italian white guy.

1derful: I thought that the whole "health issues" thing was weird since they paraded the last pope around asleep and drooling on himself in his later days.

And perhaps for that very reason John Paul II should have resigned several years before his death. Just because the precedent is to be pope until death, doesn't mean it should be.

Maybe there's a scandal worse than the crap already floating around the church and Vatican that can force a pope to resign, but I don't find it hard to believe that Ratzinger has decided that he is too infirm to carry out his duties. If that's the truth of it, then good on him for setting a new precedent. That'll be about the only good thing he's done as pope.

2013-02-12 10:36:16 AM
Holy shiat!  They finally went after an infallible, revered leader of an all-controlling religion for decades of covering up child rape?  They'll get me next, I better resign.

I had wondered if JPs final days are what prompted Benedict to retire. Maybe he doesn't want to be paraded around like that.

\ or some shocking dirt is about to surface

ha-ha-guy: It's either a scandal is coming or Ratzinger had some honest moment of introspection

I think it is both, their is a scandal coming and he realizes he can do nothing to prevent the cover up and make those responsible be accountable, so he is quitting.

He finally read the bible. Being Catholic, it was never a priority. Something didn't make sense.  He figured he was too old to understand it.

FTA:    He appointed 67 of the 117 cardinals that -- as of Monday -- are set to make the decision.

Tricky devil.  Now that he controls the college, he's doesn't have to be involved with the day-to-day crap.

My reaction exactly, although it'll likely come in the form of a really juicy bestselling tell-all a year or two from now.

The credit card payments in the state of the Vatican city are again working, and so the pilgrims as well as the tourists who visit the church of St. Peter's every day can now use the ordinary payment service, including paying for the Vatican museums," Lombardi said.

This is important!!

He probably should have. If this is a legit resignation because of "too old" then I think it's a good precedent. People are living longer, but their minds are still going out in the 80s and 90s. Give us a Pope who's actually conscious for his reign.

Sir Not Sure The Unscannable: Have some respect, people. Wouldn't you want to resign when you feel like you can't work anymore?

Exactly. Who wants to work for their entire life? Everybody should reward themselves with retirement. There are millions of little boys out there to bugger and only so many hours in the day you know.

Really? That is interesting.  You know, if I were to set up the perfect fleecing scam that I would have no fear of prosecution or retribution it would have to include my own sovereign territory where I controlled all the policing.  Also creating a societal belief that I couldn't even do anything wrong even if I tried would be a real sweet caveat too.  And hey, if I could somehow create another societal belief that just GIVING me money was a good thing to do without actually having to return any services aside from letting people in to my nice buildings and talking to them for an hour a week EN MASSE, well that's a pretty sweet deal.  I could probably afford a pretty swanky right and sweet threads too and afford all kinky sexual gratification I wanted without anyone saying anything bad about me.

HEY WAIT A MINUTE!!
