What's going on this morning?  Are the mods approving and and all submissions today?

Dogs: Get you laid, poop outside in the weeds, express affection with excitement and love
Cats: Too stupid to breed on their own, poop in a box unless you don't clean it to their exact standards (at which point they poop everywhere), express affection by biting you

I wonder if the root issue could actually be depression from locked in a small enclosure when you're an animal whose main activity is running around at high speeds.  It must suck when you plow into the glass before you can even get up to 10 mph.

Too lazy to Google the park layout just now, but I'm guessing a zoo that cares enough to get their cheetah a dog is giving them a decent roaming area at least part of the time. Besides, I think cheetahs would probably rather NOT run at top speed, since every time they do that in the wild, they're gambling that they're burning up more food energy than they catch. That's why domestic cats spend 23.9 hours a day sleeping. It's what they'd rather be doing.

On the other hand, they might just be bummed because they're in a zoo, period.

I can't say I'm surprised the cheetah population is declining. Everyone knows cheetahs never prosper.

Also I wonder how the moral support goes:

Cheetah:  So yeah man, that chick the zookeeper wants me to nail, she's like a 6 out of 10 at the best.
Dog:  Dude, zero sympathy, they cut my balls off!
Cheetah:  Good point, I better go give them what they want.

And, according to TFA, they only sprint in 200-300 meter bursts or they'll die.

I'd imagine cheetahs are like greyhounds, and are absolute couch potatoes 99% of the time.

I don't know how true this is, but I've heard that cheetahs can actually be tamed if raised in captivity (more so than, say, tigers), so I wonder if that makes them more accepting of other species like dogs as companions.

They have also been using the dogs to help protect cheetahs in the wild, although in a different fashion. Of course it isn't brought up until about the third page of TFA. They started giving Anatolian Shepherds to farmers in Africa to protect their goats. They are so efficient at chasing of predators that the farmers don't shoot the cheetahs anymore, and there is plenty of wild game for the cheetahs to go after instead of the convenient goats.

And yeah, the Cheetahs don't want to run all of the time. They are sprinters, meaning they want to sit around or sleep most of the time. Most zoos with cheetahs have runs to get them to do 100m dashes to show off their speed as well.

So the proper way for Cheetahs to reproduce, is to do it doggy-style?

Cheetah's can be domesticated. I read somewhere that they have a lousy immune system. It would be a real loss if they disappear of the earth.

The San Diego Wild Animal Park is enormous, and involves multiple savannah-type enclosures where the animals can roam at leisure.  The predators are separated, of course, but a lot of the animals are also co-mingled.

But I'd say that no matter what we do to try and recreate a natural world, our need for constraints will never allow it to be 100% natural, and I think that causes deep issues with an animal's natural impulses and behaviors, no matter what we do.  But it's either that or species go extinct.

I remember seeing a video where the zoo was taking them out to the local dog/horse race track to give them proper runs - they had a 'rabbit' on a souped up motor line that the cheetahs would chase.  It was mentioned that cheetahs NEED to run on occasion to burn out certain enzymes for proper health.  Or something.  Basically the occasional sprint was good for them.

There were very few cheetahs at some point, so they're all so inbred most can take organ transplants from each other without any rejection. Think of them as clones of the "Dueling Banjos" kid.

The slim one is a cheetah furry. The big dominant one is a German Shepard.

This article is amusing me in no small amount.
