You wonder if in a few decades time the US is really going to come a cropper due to this stuff - global economic competition is becoming stiffer every year as most of the "developing" nations (including massively populous ones like India and China) are starting to build up significant educational infrastructure, which will eat ever more up the food chain of skilled jobs. It is hard not to assume that hamstringing learning of sciences for larger and larger portions of the US population every year is going to crater the US's position in the world - especially as the most obvious next big leap forward is going to be biotechnology, so a country that is divided over something as well established and basic as evolution is going to be as crippling as if one of the nations trying to win the space race back in the 20th century wasn't sure if gravity exists.

Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin! And Abraham Lincoln. Both born on the very same day in 1809.

One of them infuriated conservatives by freeing the slaves and the other was President of the United States.

For anyone who thinks that political interference in biology teaching is harmless, I give you Lysenkoism.  The Soviet Union decided that natural selection wasn't compatible with Soviet doctrine and so squashed it in favor of Lamarckian inheritance of acquired traits, crippling Russian agriculture for decades and quite literally killing Russian biology (and biologists).  Russian scientists made major advances in theoretical physics for decades, while I dare you to find a single Russian biologist of note after about 1930.

While I doubt that Rep. Paul Broun and his ilk will manage to have many biologists executed or sent to labor camps, morons like him are more than capable of destroying science in this country if they manage to get enough support.

I'm going to the store to buy some of those tiny bananas that fit perfectly into the hand of a small monkey or Creationist. They make me feel big and strong like Joe Black.

I wonder what Creationists make of the fact that a penis fits perfectly in the average human hand. Food for thought.

Plus the amusing (and obvious) extra fun that bananas have been selectively bred over thousands of years to be like they are now, and that wild banana's are barely edible, have lots of large seeds and a completely different shape, etc.

You'd think every would be Darwin day throughout the South, what with him having married his cousin and all..
