(Talking Points Memo)   Democrats want to use the SOTU to fire the first salvo of the fourteenth round of debt talks with the 113th Congress. This is not a repeat, but it sure feels like deja vu   (tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com) divider line 32

Get used to it. This is the new norm, and you have only the Teabaggers to thank for it.

Obama just needs to turn SOTU into a powerpoint about how the debt ceiling is about paying for stuff we've already bought, because Americans really think it's about future spending.

Interesting.  I just got back from the cafeteria where I was being told that the SotU was going to have to be all about The Crimson Jihad North Korea becoming a Nuclear Power.

So, Democrats want to scare people with the ol' Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security boogeyman?

Hardly original thinking. But a proven path to never actually cutting a budget.

This kind of language is divisive, offensive, and not useful to rational discourse.  This is an insult to all who enjoy a cup or Earl Gray or perhaps enjoy having their testicles sucked or even enjoy doing the sucking.  No one wants to be compared to a bunch of belligerent know nothings.

I thought the only way to save Medicare was to pass the Paul Ryan Budget?

The quickest way to fix the deficit - fix the economy by reaching full employment. "Deficit reduction" is like giving a patient aspirin for the headaches his brain tumor is causing.

By using the word "boogeyman" are you suggesting that Republicans don't want to cut those programs?

They want to save these programs. But seriously, Democrats have been scaring old people with this tactic forever.

While I typically try to avoid blogs of any stripe, at least TPM attempts to include an unedited video or in-context quote. Go to FoxNation right now and see how they run things.

 TPM - sometimes retarded.

 FoxNation - always retarded.

This is where the bar is set, sadly, in American internet.

Why would they want to save socialized government-run programs? Isn't giving people freedom of choice in the private sector a better, more efficient, and just way to do it? Isn't that why we have such huge tax expenditures for 401(k)s and IRAs?

Define 'saved'.

Because some people also consider, say, burning a witch in cleansing fires to be 'saving' them.

Ha, good one. Nah, doing the math on contributions vs. benefits can be scary but screw it. I'm willing to expect my share to still be there when I'm old.

Because conservatives have been trying to destroy Social Security and Medicare since their inceptions.

2013-02-12 12:36:57 PM
Democrats: We propose to raise taxes on the wealthy in order to fully fund the social safety net to makes sure no one goes hungry or is denied health care.
repubs: We propose to lower taxes on the wealthy by eliminating the existing social safety net and transferring more of the costs of running the country to the poor and middle class.
American People: We choose the Democratic program.
repubs: Wait, did we say lower taxes for the wealthy and eliminate the social safety net? What we really meant was right-size taxes for the upper upper upper middle class and convert the existing social safety net to a bootstrap-driven self-sustaining entrepreneurial zone where everyone will have the satisfaction of knowing that they've received exactly the support they deserve exclusively as a result of their own efforts.
Democrats: You realize that means "lowering taxes on the wealthy, eliminating the existing social safety net and transferring more of the costs of running the country to the poor and middle class."
repubs: No! No! It's not that at all! En Español, "tamaño de derecha impuestos para la clase alta media alta superior..."

Well if you weren't a liar, you'd know that the 2009 budget was Bush's work, and that the 2011 deficit was much lower than your graph indicates and the 2012 deficit even less.

Ideal? No. But if we get out of the recession and put people back to work, tax revenues go up and poverty prevention program expenditures go down, and the deficit gets smaller (i.e. what's been happening to the deficit for the past two years continues and gets faster).

Your disingenuous is showing:  http://www.factcheck.org/2012/02/dueling-debt-deceptions/

Yes, the deficit is rising, but it has been rising before Obama was in office. The real problem is that no one can agree what to do.
