i don't really care about wrestling, but what the fark?  who would drop wrestling from the olympics?  it's pretty much one of the most olympic sports there is.  maybe they should drop track and field next...

The Olympics have been a sham since the 1972 Munich Games.  That is when it was established that sports competition everywhere would take a back seat to money and politics at every level.  From the individual athlete all the way up to the IOC and extending into the governments of every participating nation.  There has not been true international athletic competition since then.

Well, there was that one time I went to Bangkok.......

Wrestling will now join seven other sports in applying for inclusion in 2020. The others are a combined bid from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. They will be vying for a single opening in 2020.

The IOC executive board will meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, to decide which sport or sports to propose for 2020 inclusion. The final vote will be made at the IOC session, or general assembly, in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It is extremely unlikely that wrestling would be voted back in so soon after being removed by the executive board.

And yet it should be. Fix the mistake you just made and put it back. None of the others are even close to being as worthy.

Agreed.  Wrestling belongs in the olympics so much more than anything else listed.  There are massive historical reasons, plus it is an extremely physically demanding sport (farking wakeboarding? keep that crap in the X games), and it is very global...I mean it is so damn basic.  Plus, it has more parity than mony other sports.  Sure Russians and Americans do well, but so do various arab nations, and I'm sure China could field some contenders in the near future.

/Makes no sense to me

This. Having actually watched the end of the women's Modern Pentathlon at the Olympics last year (it was the final event of the Games), I actually found it interesting to watch. But last year's Games proved that boxing is corrupt as hell and it needs to go.

And then I read this just now on twitter: So much for IOC's alleged standard of universality for sports: modern pentathlon had athletes from 26 countries in London; wrestling, 71

Boxing is probably closer to the wrestling number than the pentathlon number, though I can't find a specific number.

Yes: Keep the sport
No: Drop it

Boxing has been a joke for a while--RoyJones Jr. getting jobbed in Seoul as an example--but the 2012 Olympics was a massive tsunami of crap decisions.  People who were getting clobbered every single round somehow won.
And badminton?  It doesn't speak highly if people are purposely losing in order to get a better match up in a later round.
It also brings up the subject of what sports should be removed from the Winter Olympics.

tnpir: What the hell is "wushu"?

It's a hybrid Chinese martial arts that combines and standardizes elements from other Chinese martial arts created in the mid 1950's.  There is the forms version where you do various forms like kicks and whatnot and get graded on that.  There's also the fighting version which is self-explanatory.

You know, I've always been enthralled by the Olympics, and have been involved in the Olympic movement for almost 20 years in various capacities (athlete, volunteer, coach, employee, etc.) I've seen under the mask yet the Olympics still held a bit of mystique for me.

Yet I can't provide a point to refute you. I can't imagine why the common sports fan would continue to support the Olympics.

Rhythmic gymnastics with martial arts weapons instead of ribbons, basically. Invented by the PRC to be a cool flashy demonstration without all those dangerous mystical underpinnings of other martial arts.

Let's look at the candidates (and I'll try my hardest to not be American-centric here):

Baseball/Softball- softball needs the Olympics far more than baseball does. But not enough countries in the world play either sport and because the IOC is probably Euro-centric, I can't see them voting back in baseball and softball.

Karate- nothing wrong with this, but I'd toss judo (which is utterly boring to watch) to make room for this.

Squash- this would not be a viewer friendly sport, either on TV or in person. It won't work.

Roller Sports- my brief research says this would be a summer version of speed skating. I just don't see this as necessary.

Sport Climbing- Maybe if they had to climb without harnesses or a net, I'd be interested.

Wakeboarding- Um... no. Especially since they'll supposedly be dragged from an elevated cable and not a boat. Where's the wakes then?

Wushu- how many people outside of China does this? Probably not enough to justify inclusion.

None of these make sense over wrestling based on history (wrestling as been in all but 1 summer Games) and participation.

So? They dropped the races with snowboarders and skiers too and they ARE Olympic events.

/And they dropped them for events where guys get snowmobiles dropped on them and die
//Using anything ESPN as a guide for what's a good sport is dumb

Very odd decision, that's for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if the IOC underestimated the negative reactions to this and there is some significant pushback from numerous countries (since wrestling really is a global sport).

But yeah, get rid of boxing. Sure, we can blame the judges for ruining the legitimacy of the sport, not the athletes themselves, but it's reached ridiculous levels.

Beach volleyball is under the volleyball banner.  You'd have to get rid of indoor too to free up a spot for another sport.

Ribbon twirling is under the gymnastics banner.  You'd have to get rid of the rings and vault and everything else to free up a spot for another sport.

Horse dancing is under the equestrian banner.  You'd have to get rid of all the horse exclusive stuff to free a spot for another sport.

The bicycle exclusive sports are all under one banner, all the exclusive swimming and/or pool sports are under one banner, the flatwater and whitewater canoe/kayak are under one banner.

For the Winter games, the non-hockey/curling rink sports are together, all the downhill stuff is together, bobsleigh and skeleton are together.

Actually, I think all the swimming sports are viewed as separate sports. Table tennis is separate from regular tennis. And in winter, speed skating is separate from figure skating.
