So the rich and powerful can be prosecuted for their crimes now?

Did I sleep through the revolution, again?

I thought since he'd be living out the rest of his days inside the Vatican that extradition might enter into it.

This About That: They didn't prosecute Dick & Dubya, they haven't prosecuted Putin, they aren't prosecuting Kim Jong Whatshisname, and they aren't going to prosecute the Pope.

Don't you DARE come around here with your stinking reality -
I reject your reality - and instead insert my own  .  .  .

Raharu: It would be nice.  Maybe this is how he plans to fall onto his sword for the church.

TINFOIL HAT TIME------

The pope knows he's going to die soon, cancer, Alzheimer's , whatever... So he uses this to step down something that hasn't happened since the 1400s... To take the rap for the church.

I don't think it's that magnanimous of an act. If he steps down now he can watch over the proceedings for his replacement and insure that some other conservative asswipe gets installed - thereby cementing his legacy of bringing the church back from the liberal reforms attempted by Vatican II. A live ex-Pope can exert a lot more pressure on the selection crew than a Pope who dies in office.

Though a surprise to many, one group that the announcement failed to rattle is the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP)

Oh, I'm sure that'll happen any day now.  I'm going to hold my breath while I wait for the news.
