Devo: Get her a gym membership.

And now we have a competition: "Most inappropriate gift for Valentine's Day" aka "Gift most likely to get you KTFO"

Klivian: This is the first Valentine's Day I will actually have been in a relationship for. Given that we are taking a long weekend in Florida starting on the 15th, I have nothing planned aside from packing for the trip.
She says the trip to Florida is more than enough and we don't need to do anything on the 14th, but it feels like a trick.

Yes, it's a TRAP! She's expecting you to 'surprise her' with a gift on the 14th, regardless of your plans for the 15th.

At the very least, be prepared to have a surprise gift in your back pocket for when she inexplicably gets upset on the evening of the 14th.
Even if it's a pack of condoms, or a 24-pack of colon cleanser you got from the 99c store, as recommended in their ad: http://www.99only.com/files/99ad_021213_f.pdf

FTFA: People who aren't married or dating often feel left out when they see all the celebrations of love surrounding them.
"It gets frustrating," said Veronica Smith, 33, of Orlando, who has been single for several years. "It's one of those holidays, if you're by yourself, you know it for sure."

She's 33 and has been single for years? I wondered why, and read on...

"This year, she's considering taking her nieces out to dinner at Ethos Vegan Kitchen."

Oh, OK. That explains Veronica's perennial single status.

/ProTip: if you don't want to be single forever, eat at restaurants that serve NORMAL food!

Candles, dude, lots of candles.
or just one nice gift-candle.
Candles beat flowers every time.

Every year for Valentine's, Mrs. Pyynk and I have a ritual. One or the other of us will pick up steaks with all the fixings. I get her flowers and then we'll watch a movie and just spend time together. Spending ridiculous amounts of money for Valentine's is just a terrible idea.

This year we're doing the same, but adding a concert tonight by one of our favorite bands.

It's funny, that article seems to imply we (Irish) eat, or have at one time eaten, corned beef and cabbage, we don't - the dish we eat is bacon* and cabbage. I've never once in my life seen corned beef and cabbage.

If the article is implying we never eat bacon and cabbage, it's wrong. I eat it as much as possible, and I farking love it.

*not the same as your bacon in the USA, this bacon is a shoulder of bacon, boiled in water.

The Irish don't eat corned beef and cabbage. Or say "Patty." I'm sure  this list will go green (yuk) in the next few weeks.

The author of that list sounds Protestant.

And screw you subby.  St Patricks Day is one of our family holidays and we all get together to celebrate our Irish heritage.  Sure, plenty of non-irish folk go out, get drunk and ... But if it is about having fun and being happy, then more power to the holiday!!

Now - Columbus Day.  There's a holiday to hate.

(Just kidding wops!)

Yeah that hate on St. Patrick was a bit far fetched in the conspiracy theory department. I still go out on the holiday and have fun, I just find it funny when people celebrate something they don't know what they're celebrating for or even know the culture the holiday originates from.

I know for a fact that the irish DO say Paddy, if they happen to be speaking to or about someone named Patrick

Disagree.  If a guy gave me a candle, I'd be confused (ooh..."springtime breeze"....thanks).  With most women I know, you can't go wrong with flowers (unless she's allergic).

Give her a gift candle and she'll probably smile at the gesture (unless she really loves candles).  Give her roses and you probably should get the packing done she gets home.

rickythepenguin: I love the day after Valentine's Day.  You always know who didn't get that ring they had their heart set on. Count how many puffy eyed young ladies you see that morning, whom you know are in relationships.

Former co worker came in one day after, and no "Good morning", "whats up", etc.  Just an angry, "AGAIN!"  and i look up and she flashes the back of her unadorned hand to me.

Wedding ring.  Not yours.

And 50% off candy! Nom nom nom!

My Irish Granny was shocked that the Irish People in the US celebrate their heritage with Corned Beef and Cabbage, she claimed it was "famine food" (poor people food).

/Granny can't cook so I have no idea what Irish people eat

Did no one else see how sad and pathetic they made Smith sound?

"It gets frustrating," said Veronica Smith, 33, of Orlando, who has been single for several years. "It's one of those holidays, if you're by yourself, you know it for sure."
But some restaurants are trying to court diners such as Smith, a high-school-attendance clerk.
Smith, who used to watch the romantic movie "Sleepless in Seattle" at home alone each Feb. 14, has had a change of heart about how to spend the holiday.

This year, she's considering taking her nieces out to dinner at Ethos Vegan Kitchen, which will have dinner, drink and dessert specials.

"You have to step outside and say, How can I make this day work for me and not feel lonely on it?' "

I mean not only do they point out she has been single for years and a really pathetic valentine's day ritual, but also has a crap job, and siblings who apparently have found love and families and want to hand their kids over to her so they can go out that night.

DAMN.

I've heard that as well. I've also heard that restaurants in Ireland don't sell a lot of fish for the same reason

I like St. Patrick's Day; it's my birthday.  I just don't like it when it's on a Friday and friends want to go somewhere like Kelly's Tavern where it's an overcrowded frat-boy fest.

Actually celebrating SVD for the first time in a while.  My ex and I didn't really celebrate (ok by me).  My current BF and I just celebrated our 1 year anniversary yesterday, so I wasn't thinking of anything for SVD.  It was his idea to get together for dinner (fortunately at his house and not out - just leftovers, too) and some time together.  I did make him a card.  I don't get the spending large quantities of money to "show someone you love them."  I've always thought that was dumb....just spending time with someone should be enough.

/Not the fancy type of girl
//Don't really care for SPD now that I'm a teacher....hate SVD while at school, too.

I have two things to say so,  first is that St.  Patrick's day is amazing. Secondly everyone here who talks about Valentine's day makes me even happier to be single again, especially the people who are in a relationship and support it.

Mugato: Anyone who doesn't love St. Patrick's Day's never done it in Savannah.

Didn't think Savannah was a traditional Irish name, but congrats.
