RootBoy42: jfarkinB: nmemkha: Lets flip it around: name a significant communist movement that was ideologically theist.

Liberation theology, perhaps? At least the right-wingers who feel threatened by it like to tag it as "communism".

Christian communism is a form of religious communism based on Christianity. It is a theological and political theory based upon the view that the teachings of Jesus Christ compel Christians to support communism as the ideal social system. Although there is no universal agreement on the exact date when Christian communism was founded, many Christian communists assert that evidence from the Bible suggests that the first Christians, including the Apostles, established their own small communist society in the years following Jesus' death and resurrection. As such, many advocates of Christian communism argue that it was taught by Jesus and practiced by the Apostles themselves.

Of course, you can say that that's not a truly Scottish "significant" movement.

The idea that the early Church were proto-communists most likely comes from this passage in Acts 2, describing early Christians.

"44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts"

And later in Acts 4:

"34There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold35and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need"

Too bad they sold out to Mammon.

NateAsbestos: And I'll bite: please explain how atheism is a "key tenet of communism".

"Religion is the Opiate of the People" - Karl Marx.

"Atheism is a natural and inseparable part of Marxism, of the theory and practice of scientific socialism " - Vladimir Lenin

"All modern religions and churches, all and of every kind of religious organizations are always considered by Marxism as the organs of bourgeois reaction, used for the protection of the exploitation and the stupefaction of the working class." - Vladimir Lenin

There is the League of Militant Atheists, the official state body of the USSR created to eradicate religion and oversee the dismantling of religion from society.

The People's Republic of China is officially atheist, and part of the whole point of the Cultural Revolution was the wholesale eradication of all religion from China.  Religion was only tolerated once it was clear it could not be destroyed outright.

Then there was Pol Pot and his goal (among other goals) of the wholesale eradication of religion in Cambodia, from razing Buddhist temples and Catholic cathedrals to the ground, to the wholesale slaughter of clergy and monks in the killing fields.

The whole reason that the National Motto of the United States was changed from "E Pluribus Unum" to "In God We Trust" and that "Under God" was appended to the end of the Pledge of Allegiance in the 1950's was specifically to respond to the atheism of Communism.

Then there was this classic bit of Communist propaganda:
upload.wikimedia.org

. . .where the enemies of Communism are established: Capitalist governments, religion, the military that back capitalist governments, and the middle class (i.e. the bourgeois since Communist dogma liked to use the French term)

I find is incredibly amusing that at suggesting that atheism is not this morally superior philosophy that it pretends to be and is just as flawed as any other belief system, that I'm called a troll or a FOX News viewer.  Atheists get just as butthurt at hearing that their belief system isn't perfect as theists do.

No, not all atheists are communists, but Marxist-Leninist and Maoist Communism (i.e. pretty much everything that is generally referred to as "Communist") are blatantly and unabashedly atheist ideologies. . .and that's the face of militant atheism.

Did communists have other motives beyond just atheism?  Yeah.  Then again, if you think every Taliban fighter is in it just because of Islamic fundamentalism instead of loyalty to their Pashtu tribes and resentment at being invaded yet again, or that Palestinian militants are blowing themselves up because they are fundamentalist Muslims instead of trying to resist Israeli oppression, you may be the one watching too much FOX News.

bikerbob59: mongbiohazard: Yeah, lightning never hits lightning rods at the top of the tallest building in town. And this isn't the Vatican PR department manipulating people's superstitions. Neither of those things ever happen. Ever.

^^ this ^^

Counterpoint (TFA):

"Thunderstorms are not unknown in winter, but they are more likely to hit the celestial city in spring or summer, which makes the lightning strike even more unusual."

Who cares? Until Jesus shows up leading his army of flying raptor riding angels is all just speculation one way or the other.

If God were omnipotent, he could've shot right past that lightning rod.

/trying to work up something with "omnipotent" and "equipotential", but it's early

It could have been an errant bolt of Force Lightning coming from within the dome. Maybe Benedict is purging the Vatican of younglings.
