NateAsbestos: The prominent communist leaders you mention were atheist, therefore being atheist is required to be communist? They were also all men, so being a man must be a requisite to be a communist.

Never said I was atheist, communist, or watched Fox News (not even sure why this came up). Just pointing out the logic is not sound.

From those quotes, I would say that to the definitions of communism laid out by Karl Marx and V.I. Lenin, yes, atheism is a requirement to communism.

Yes, I know there are people who call themselves religious communists. . .but to the people who basically created communism and defined it that would be crazy talk.  I would not say it's No True Scotsman to say somebody who doesn't follow the definitions of communism by the people who created the ideology isn't really a communist.

As for the FOX news thing, vpb upthread accused me of getting the idea that there was any tie between atheism and communism from FOX News.  I got the idea from the words of the author of the Communist Manifesto and the leader of the communist revolution in Russia.  Y'know, people who might know what communism is about.  Then backed that up with communist propaganda, which is at least useful for knowing what communism claims as doctrine, and how other communist leaders and regimes engaged in similar campaigns to eradicate religion.

Anyway, the whole point of this little derailment in the discussion was as a rebuttal to I drunk what posting that worn-out comic that tries to liken grumpy whiners with suicide bombers and abortion-clinic killers, pretending that nobody has ever killed or committed atrocities in the name of atheism, which the history of the 20th century shows is false.  Even if you weed out the vast majority of things done by those regimes, the Orthodox Christian clergy who were thrown in gulags and had their churches bulldozed by the USSR because of their religion, or the Buddhist monks who were slain in the killing fields for no reason other than their faith, the Chechen Muslims who were deported en-masse to work camps to be worked to death because their faith made them enemies of the state, or the Chinese monks who were killed and their temples burned to the ground during the Cultural Revolution would seem to put up a significant body count, certainly higher than abortion clinic killers.

Silverstaff:<snip>

Fair enough. I'd never try to claim that atheists had never committed atrocities. I just disagree from a pedantic standpoint that the advocacy of government-owned capital has any bearing whatsoever on one's religious beliefs, much less demand a disavowal of a god or gods. They just don't seem like intrinsically linked philosophies, even if the leaders who instilled communism generally were atheists. The ideology of communism may have been created by atheists but it's not an important tenet: communism is a market civic, the other a religious philosophy. Me being a computer scientist doesn't require I adhere to the religious beliefs of Turing, Lovelace, or Babbage.

*shrug*

RootBoy42: jfarkinB: nmemkha: Lets flip it around: name a significant communist movement that was ideologically theist.

Liberation theology, perhaps? At least the right-wingers who feel threatened by it like to tag it as "communism".

Christian communism is a form of religious communism based on Christianity. It is a theological and political theory based upon the view that the teachings of Jesus Christ compel Christians to support communism as the ideal social system. Although there is no universal agreement on the exact date when Christian communism was founded, many Christian communists assert that evidence from the Bible suggests that the first Christians, including the Apostles, established their own small communist society in the years following Jesus' death and resurrection. As such, many advocates of Christian communism argue that it was taught by Jesus and practiced by the Apostles themselves.

Of course, you can say that that's not a truly Scottish "significant" movement.

The idea that the early Church were proto-communists most likely comes from this passage in Acts 2, describing early Christians.

"44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts"

And later in Acts 4:

"34There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold35and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need"

Too bad they sold out to Mammon.
