Agreed, first pic looks just like the end of Predator 2.

I daresay that AvP in nearly every execution is the clearest example of something that could be amazing turning out to be complete trash. Repeatedly.

Yeah, I didn't expect the second one to suck even harder.

On the other hand I recently caught "Predators" on cable and I have to say it was a lot better than I was expecting.

It was a pleasant surprise to say the least.  I was pretty wary of the casting but they all turned in some pretty believable characters.  The nod to the original movie was a nice touch.

That is true. I watched it one night expecting to have a serious discussion with myself later about why I insist on wasting my time with movies that I know are going to be complete crap, but for what it was and what I assumed it would be, it was pretty good. Granted, my standards were obviously in the gutter, but I'm usually highly critical of crap and that movie didn't make me regret seeing it. That's high praise, all things considered.

I still have no idea why "Colonial Marines team up with Predators to wipe out Alien infestation" was apparently considered an inferior idea to what we got. They could have simply ripped off the AvP arcade beat 'em up and it would have been awesome.

Speaking of Aliens, anyone see the scathing posts about Colonial Marines so far?  It sounds like the game is a bombin' and the reasons all the previews and reviews only feature concept art rather then in-game footage are coming out.

Dude, just say it. "I liked that movie." Nobody's going to think less of you if you don't spend two or three sentences explaining about how some flick battled through your oh-so-refined tastes, and how you allowed it to give you a little amusement, despite your superior cynicism...

To be fair, Dark Horse changed it since they didn't want to interfere with Aliens 3, which unfortunately was cannon instead of the books themselves. Althought, before I plow through my bald-headed girlfriend, I do like to put on my welding goggles in slow-mo.

From what I've read so far it seems that the main engine was written several year ago by some subpar company and Gearbox was tasked with trying to clean that up and wrap it in a multiplayer engine without enough time to do much with either.  These opinions are surfacing from the usual calm and sensible posts on the steam forums so take it with that in mind, meanwhile its telling that the only previews of the game was a cinematic video and concept art instead of genuine screen shots.

Uhh, there was plenty of gameplay video way before the cinematic trailer.  Come to think of it the first trailer was all ingame footage.  One review I saw pointed out that there are technical issues with the game relating to graphics but the gameplay itself is actually pretty good.  I'll find out later today.

So it's the Duke Nukem problem all over again?  It's a shame especially since the work Gearbox does is excellent.  Whatever, I'll still play it.

The first two AvP games by Rebellion were very good, although some of the other ones were pretty crappy. The AvP movie would've worked, except for two huge problems:

1. It was written and directed by big-budget hack Paul W.S. Anderson.

2. Anderson ripped off his own Resident Evil script for AvP. All he did was replace the underground research lab with an underground temple, and replace the zombies with Aliens and Predators.

And they totally set it up for a sequel. I'm pissed that's not happening.

Farkin' right.

Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov, and, uh, the Yakuza and African guys.

Good casting.

Hell yeah, Predators was good. The officially sanctioned order in terms of quality is thusly:
1. Alien
2. Aliens
3. Predator
4. Predators
5. Alien 3
6. Predator 2
10,349: AvP 2
10,350: AvP

Adrien Brody did really well as a badass, considering some of his prior roles.  He even gained a few pounds for the role.  I heard that they didn't want to cast any huge guys (i.e. Arnold, Jesse) as to not step on the original too much.  I thought that was a nice touch.

It was also nice to see Oleg Taktarov in the movie.  The "Russian Teddy Bear" I think they call him.  I remember seeing him compete (and actually win one year) in the early Ultimate Fighting Championship.  He's an OK actor, too.

I also think that AvP could've been much better if it was rated R, and had a larger budget.  Some of the scenes looked like the setting of a high school play.

I don't understand who thought turning two hard R-rated franchises into a PG-13 was a good idea.

I really don't understand who thought turning the franchises over to the hack Paul W.S. Anderson was a good idea, and letting him write the screenplay was even worse.

No budget to do the Colonial Marines with Predators fighting Aliens, so lets go to Antartica! STUPID!

Agreed.  The effects were embarrassing to watch, but the story was pretty entertaining, given the desperation for cost saving story settings.

I still think that the Predator and Alien franchises should be separate.
