(WCPO Cincinnati)   Indiana church wants high school to have a 'traditional prom' & ban gays & lesbians. Special Ed teacher contributes to the rational discussion by declaring that "Gays have no purpose in life" & then pretty much compares them to her special needs kids   (wcpo.com) divider line 377

RobSeace: I drunk what: killing them is the only logical and rational choice, FOR SCIENCE!

Whenever you post like this, you force my brain to read everything you write in Cave Johnson's voice...

"Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much! In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired!"

Just don't mention the lemons.

Isn't there a big market for "gay for pay" porn? (Look, I just know about it because they mentioned it on Law and Order once, okay?)
I'd say that counts as proof.  I agree that it would be more entertaining if it starred Herman Cain, but I wouldn't hold my breath on him ever releasing those tapes.

miss diminutive: Honestly, I don't understand the reasoning behind the hatred many Christians hold towards the gay community. Why do they take this one issue, which is hardly mentioned outside the Old Testament, and make it into a rallying point? They already dismiss and disregard so much of what's written in the bible, why does homosexuality take front seat?

Because it's the only sin they're unlikely to commit.

pciszek: The classic 10% number was later found to be erroneously high due to sampling errors and in any case includes bisexuals...

So that figure couldn't possibly be erroneously LOW since in 1948 an admission of homosexuality commonly lead to your life being utterly destroyed, or even incarceration?

Yeah, that 10% figure is Kinsey's and it dates to 1948.

Perspective.

On the evening of the prom, when the haters show up, bar them from entry on the basis you're having a Nonbigoted Prom.

When they complain about discrimination, concede you ARE discriminating, but remind them that your discrimination is legally permissible because gay-haters, like gays, are not a protected class.

Wish them a good evening.

Couldn't they claim that their gay hatin' is a manifestation of their religion, therefore IS a protected class?

/But they might opt to strategically lose that battle, lets the gays get wind of it and start their own religion.

OMG  so very much THIS!!

/don't get me started on "family values"

A friend's mom made a Facebook page called "Traditional Values" that was naturally an anti-marriage-equality thing. My friend and I made sockpuppet accounts and trolled them with "supportive" comments. We ultimately got the mom to say that black people are fine, "in their place". Many, many lulz were had.

keylock71: These people are farked in the head...

We had a couple of gay couples and one trans-gendered student, who attended the prom alone, at my Senior Prom and no one batted an eye... And this was back in farking 1989.

Ditto, from my 1989 & 1990 proms. In North Carolina, back when Jesse Helms was our senator - so not exactly a mecca of progressive thought. But I don't recall anyone at all having a problem with it - even from the strong Christians at my school, who had the sense to know that, even if they disagreed, acting like a crazy bigoted nutcase doesn't really win a lot of converts. The only griping about the prom I remember is about the prom committee choosing a cheesy Kenny G instrumental (Silhouette) for our prom theme.

I've lived in Indiana before. This sort of stuff is why their economic development people lament "brain drain" - unless they have really strong ties to the area, the best and brightest frequently go elsewhere, as soon as they're done with college or even high school. Even the straight ones.

But obviously LGBTs don't discriminate hence they get a free pass on Fark no matter what they espouse.

You missed the point by even more this time around.  But oh please do tell how your microcosm is unfairly tilted against heterosexual men.

zombat: i linked to where straight people were asked to fark off from a gay bar

No, you linked to a pseudo-militant opinion piece about how some types of women are not welcome all of the time, namely those who are looking to be entertained by the gay scene and those who participate in it as if they were some sort of act.  I'll point out something relevant that you seem to have missed in your rush to feel persecuted:  "I'm not here to argue for a ban on straight people in gay clubs; that's discrimination, and clearly wrong. However I will ask you to a) rethink the entitlement you feel to occupy every space and b) respect that no matter how much you "love the gays," sometimes gay people need to be amongst their peers and therefore apart from you.".  That's direct from your FA by the way.

The glaringly obvious difference between the two is that yours is an opinion piece whereas TFA is a news report about an organised attempt to exclude gay people from an event which they have every right to attend.  So you can stop feeling persecuted now!  Isn't that nice?

Bigotry is the same no matter who advocates it,its time you apologist admitted that.

Being ok with statements like these just shows your own double standards:

The Envoy: sometimes gay people need to be amongst their peers and therefore apart from you.

Because if you are ok with that then you should be ok with the prom, I find both equally reprehensible.

2013-02-14 05:49:13 AM

zombat: Bigotry is the same no matter who advocates it,its time you apologist admitted that.

It actually isn't.  Established bigotry, legal and institutional, are much more powerful than individual bias.  For example, racial segregation as a law versus a bunch of black dudes wondering what the f*ck you're doing in their barbershop.

zombat: Because if you are ok with that then you should be ok with the prom, I find both equally reprehensible.

Prom is for the high school, gay bar is a private business.  And I would bet that if this was about a business with a "Reserve the right to not serve anybody we choose" policy not serving a homosexual, you would be piping up in favor of the rights of business owners.  It's not because you're biased or anything, it's just because you'd rather scramble in the mud looking for a point, instead of picking one from the branches, because you have a lazy mind.

You what?  The two are entirely different.  That's not an opinion, it's a plain fact.  You seem to be the only one who doesn't understand this.  So tell us again how one person's opinion (and let's be totally honest here: this is 1 person and there's NO evidence that the opinion or the feelings that engendered it are a) real and b) were ever acted on) is the same as an organisation and its supporters actually attempting to exclude people based on their orientation.

Because guess what?  They're not the same thing at all.
