Just some of the idiocy from the article:

When asked if she thinks gays have a purpose in life, Medley said, "No I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it."

and

"A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize that it was a choice and they're choosing God," Medley told WTWO.

Bollocks.

Gays don't have a purpose in life??? Really???

Alright class, let's review:

a. Oliver Sipple - a gay former marine who in all probability saved Pres. Gerald Ford's life
b. Alan Turing - a gay mathematician who broke one of the Nazi's most important secret codes.
c. Baynard Rustin - a gay man who organized the 1963 march on DC (where MLK made his I Have A Dream speech)
d. Desiderius Erasmus - a gay priest who was instrumental in the first publication of the New Testament (suck it, you homophobes who hide behind religion to excuse your ignorance)

and lets not even START on homosexual contributions to music, literature, and theater!

So in summary, Ms. Medley, get your head out of your ass.

AdolfOliverPanties: "Christians have always been prepared for a fight. Jesus gave us armor for the front, not the back."

Why is it the asshole Christians who most often make comments that sound so, well, gay?

It's a reference to Paul's metaphor about the Armor of God. In sermons about the Armor of God, it's very common for pastors to claim that there's no armor on there covering your back, because God never wants you to retreat. I'm not really sure about that, because that would require a study of the cultural context of the word Paul used for "breastplate," and we can't have textual criticism in church...

(It may actually refer to a bare-bones breastplate, for all I know. It may also be that Paul wasn't trying to make the metaphor that deep.)

miss diminutive: Honestly, I don't understand the reasoning behind the hatred many Christians hold towards the gay community. Why do they take this one issue, which is hardly mentioned outside the Old Testament, and make it into a rallying point? They already dismiss and disregard so much of what's written in the bible, why does homosexuality take front seat?

Well, in the 2-3 places in the New Testament where it is mentioned (sort of,) it's called either a shameful symptom of human nature, or a sin on par with murder. But anyway, my understanding is that homosexuality is the designated whipping boy for Christians (yes, giggity) because if they stopped getting outraged about homosexuality, they might start having to preach sermons on the passages that talk about charity, economic justice, and self-sacrifice, and that's a tougher sell.

(Although, I have met Christians who embrace charity, economic justice, self-sacrifice, and outraged homophobia simultaneously, so it is possible.)

Amen. I have been trying to figure that out for years, and can't believe the level of derp that surrounds the issue. I have lost parishioners by saying from the pulpit that the very human writers of the Bible got that wrong, and being gay is not a sin.

/tilting at windmills.

I would argue that the concept of "being gay" didn't really exist when the Bible was written. The Bible, particularly the Old Testament, doesn't address orientation, but behavior. Christians love to cite that ONE verse from Leviticus, but they forget about all the other verses in that chapter that talk about the same-sex behaviors that are also frowned upon. The main message of Leviticus 18 is not "gays are bad" it's "Hey men, stop screwing anything that moves and be faithful to your wives!" It gets pretty specific about not sleeping with one's mother in law, daughter in law, sister in law, or any other female you encounter. It makes sense, because that kind of behavior would destroy a community and ones marriage. The verse about same-sex relations is put at the end, meant to close a loophole by saying that sleeping with other dudes also counts as cheating.

Many of the other same-sex versus seem to be about NAMBLA type relationships that were common back then, or were again meant to counter the "it's not adultary if it's another dude" argument. Again, it wasn't targeting orientation, because that was an alien concept. Instead, it was against promiscuity and in favor of monogamy.

The way I see it, according to the Bible, being gay is no more or less sinful than being straight. It's not orientation that's the issue, but behavior.

So that could be an additional argument you could make, that these verses encourage monogamy, and in this day and age, whether gay or straight, monogamy is still a good thing. This is why I, as a Christian, am in favor of gay marriage. I like monogamy. Monogamy builds and sustains communities, and when you look at these versus from the perspective of preserving monogamy, they stop being hateful and are no longer tools used to bludgeon gays.

Majick Thise: My kids will not be going to a discriminatory Prom. ALL the students should be allowed to go.

My youngest son (he's 11) thinks that 'gay' is a bad word. There are kids at school who pick on him  and
ask him if he's gay and when he tells me about it, he always *bleeps* out the word 'gay'. I keeptelling him
that it isn't a bad word, that there is nothing wrong with being gay, that it's just anotherpart of who a
person is - like having brown hair or blue eyes.

It's not easy raising a tolerant kid - especially when my husband is so homophobic. Except for lesbians. He
likes lesbians. But homosexual males? Abomination.

It's one of the few areas where our beliefs are at opposition. My oh-so-old-school-Catholic husband is very
firmly in the marriage-is-one-man-one-woman camp. I believe that folks should be free to love and commit
to whom they will regardless of gender.

In a way, Krispy is right. You don't have a purpose until you create one for yourself. There is no one-size-fits-all purpose in life we are all born into, though. All those "why are we here?" questions some people ask are pretty easy to answer if you look at it that way. "Well, why do you want to be here? Do that. That's why you're here." So yes, we all have a purpose. It just takes a while to settle on one for yourself sometimes. YMMV on that viewpoint, of course.

If you believe in evolution, then gays have no purpose in life.

If you're a creationist, then gays are fine.

The purpose of life (if you aren't religious) is procreation. Passing on superior genetic material to the next generation. If you're not going to have kids and don't believe in God, then there is no purpose for your life.

Recoil Therapy: This country was founded (according to the history beat into everyone's head in school) by Puritans & they've had a death grip on policy ever since....

Yeah about that. The Puritans weren't who they're often portrayed as. If you want back to the Pilgrims and those who came right after you'd have found people who loved their beer, loved to sing and yeah they liked their dancing. The anti-fun brigade didn't come til later. It was in part the work of men like Jonathan Edwards and others who lead the Great Revival. They, as many since, portrayed the present as spoiled and those who came before as the ideal. Keep in mind in the Massachusetts Bay Colony you could find tons of premarital sex and no one cared. If a woman got pregnant as long as she was married before she gave birth the child was not considered a bastard and there was no social stigma to her pregnancy. And this is how it had been for a while, certainly well before Edwards showed up. Of course then you flash forward to the 1800s and you get another revival, which again declares those who came in the past as morally superior. Along the way you get this stuff being written into folk lore and what's called common wisdom. Thing is, if you'd have walked up to someone in Plymouth in 1640 and railed against alcohol, they'd have thought you were touched in the head. The evils of dancing? Hope you enjoy your social ostracism. And as for the founding fathers, they loved their booze, their dancing and teh sexing. Hell Benjamin Franklin belonged to a sex club, and this wasn't exactly a secret.
