miss diminutive: PreMortem: miss diminutive: Honestly, I don't understand the reasoning behind the hatred many Christians hold towards the gay community. Why do they take this one issue, which is hardly mentioned outside the Old Testament, and make it into a rallying point? They already dismiss and disregard so much of what's written in the bible, why does homosexuality take front seat?

[www.bbc.co.uk image 288x291]

Because it's easier to loathe someone else than to loathe yourself.

I'm sure a small percentage of Christians who are against gays are gay themselves and are trapped in some kind of cycle of self loathing, but that doesn't explain the vast majority of them who honestly believe that being gay is some kind of abomination because their contradictory and ludicrously outdated holy book mentions it a few times.

If they're going by Old Testament standards why aren't they for polygamy and stoning thieves and adulterers?

This country was founded (according to the history beat into everyone's head in school) by Puritans & they've had a death grip on policy ever since....

I think that both you & PreMortem are hitting on it.  A lot of it probably has to do with generations of people being told over & over again that "good people just don't do that" by..... church leaders.  Up until very recently being a pastor, preacher, etc was one of the few socially acceptable ways for a man to remain unmarried for life & thus tended to attract both the people who did actually have a calling but also homosexuals (of course I'm painting in VERY wide brushes here but more to make a point than to debate details) who could then hide not wanting to be with a woman.  Recently (past couple of decades) it has become much more socially acceptable to 'come out' & live your life in the open.  In the same time frame there has also been a SIGNIFICANT reduction in the number of young men wanting to enter the priesthood/church.  Now it may not be 1+1=2 straight line reasoning but I feel that it is a large part of why the church ('church' as in all religions of different flavors that don't allow their priests to marry) has had such a hard time recently recruiting the next generation of priests - they don't have to go there to live a 'normal' life any longer.

I'm going to guess it has a lot to do with the fact that they generally have very fearful views in general of human sexuality. It's easy for them to ignore it in the context of normal heterosexual relationships (so long as they are chaste, they don't have to think about it) but when confronted with a homosexual probably all they can think about is dirty dirty homo-sex.

Which is obviously the gays fault for being all gay and stuff.

All kidding aside - who knows?

It saddens me when my friends and family don't get how important this is.

I think there's two main reasons:
First, there's the closet cases who are in denial about their own attractions, and rage in self-delusion.
Second and more commonly, people like to see the flaws in others rather than examine their own. Fretting about greed and envy and the like? Uhh, let's hate on other people instead.

It's not even so much that they were necessarily wrong, but rather they were talking about something else entirely... To steal HDM's link from earlier: both Leviticus and Romans, the two most commonly cited "anti-gay" passages, are actually talking about cultic idol worship, and not condemning all homosexual relations outside of those practices...

I met a fellow about a month and a half ago. Biblical literalist. Say's there is a prophecy involving David and the planet Mercury and a bunch of other weird stuff. Got on the subject of gays. He pointed me to Matthew 19:12 "For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it." His interpretation? This referred to gays, and he took the last sentence to mean they will be accepted into heaven, and we should accept them too. Not hate and "tolerate", but full blown accept.

Again, a BIBLICAL LITERALIST (and self described evangelist apologist) who reads this and says God was cool with gays. Nice guy. Not dangerous kooky with regard to the prophecy stuff, he seemed well intentioned.  Seemed like one of a kind though...

The thing is, even if you accept it as a sin, there is no evidence that it is one of the important ones, certainly compared to things that are hammered on about for most of the new testament like helping the poor and needy, and loving thy neighbor (which Jesus basically explains means everyone else, rather than everyone like you). Of course paying attention to the actually core messages of Christ would be difficult when your basic policies are that the best way to help poor people is to take all their stuff to motivate them to not be poor, and that everyone not like you will burn in hell and deserves hate and scorn poured upon them.

If you believed in the anti-christ, it would be hard not to see right wing evangelicals as the ultimate incarnation given how they manage to claim to be Christian while being almost diametrically opposed to his positions on everything.

LDM90: He thinks they're sinners but doesn't treat them badly.

It's hard for most people to believe that a person who is more than happy to publicly confess that they think of gay people as "subhuman" doesn't devote at least some amount of their time in life to treating them as such.  Our actions tend to follow our thoughts.

Now, as to the matter of "can we change what this person thinks?"  No, I don't think we can.  Fortunately people like this tend to be their own worst enemy, as demonstrated here.

Seems like this is just one group of asshole church fundies (plus the special ed lady) doing this while the school itself is being supportive and inclusive of everyone being welcome at the official prom.

For what it's worth, I knew several people from Sullivan in college and their response to this on Facebook has been a collective facepalm and "Not this shiat again."

dletter: As of 2007, the school has an enrollment of approximately 600 students

If you go by the various "estimates" of gays in society in general, you are looking at 30-60.

The classic 10% number was later found to be erroneously high due to sampling errors and in any case includes bisexuals, at least some of whom could be expected to be dating someone of the opposite gender at any given time, and thus would not likely be recognized as "gay" by any busybodies keeping track at the prom.
