(WCPO Cincinnati)   Indiana church wants high school to have a 'traditional prom' & ban gays & lesbians. Special Ed teacher contributes to the rational discussion by declaring that "Gays have no purpose in life" & then pretty much compares them to her special needs kids   (wcpo.com) divider line 377

We had a traditional prom.  And as tradition dictates, everyone that hadn't already figured shiate out came out of closet when they felt comfortable with doing so.

"We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted," a student told WTWO.

SULLIVAN, Ind. - Some parents, students and clergy in an eastern Indiana city want a separate high school prom banning gay and lesbian students.

I guess it is East of something in Indiana.

Of all the F'd up things you (America, collective) do, this, above all else, is why you can't have nice things.

/and the special ed teacher needs to be forced to find a new line of work more in keeping with her opinions and apparent lack of ability... I just can't think of anything that skill set is actually suited to...

I wonder how many gay students there are in that pissant town of less than 5,000 people.

BarkingUnicorn: I wonder how many gay students there are in that pissant town of less than 5,000 people.

As of 2007, the school has an enrollment of approximately 600 students

If you go by the various "estimates" of gays in society in general, you are looking at 30-60.

In a town like that, my guess is you can count the number that are actually "out" on your hand.

A thousand years ago at my prom two guys came out after a few too many hits of the punch...  EVERYONE was "Yea and?" The drama queen got all whiny... The other guy went home with a new friend.  Actually three guys came out that night, anyway, they are still together 28 years later.

Her kids are mentally handicapped.
She's retarded.

This is my home county. I moved away from there. Wonder why?

This is so embarrassing and pathetic.

it's bad enough being gay in that county without having your teachers come out against you in the media.

There is a petition out against her, by the way, at Change.org.

If there was any sense in the world, that teacher would be banned from their job.  They clearly aren't fit to interact with children.

"Christians have always been prepared for a fight. Jesus gave us armor for the front, not the back."

Why is it the asshole Christians who most often make comments that sound so, well, gay?

My son might wear a dress to such a prom. He's straight, but outspoken.

We live in Middle of Nowhere, Texas. Oddly enough, our high school is very accepting.

Statistically, there should be about 250 homosexuals in a town that size based on the fairly standard 5%, and age bracketing, for high school age, there should be about 12 in high school at any given time...  I'm not sure I knew 12 in my high school, and IT was about a third the population of this town...

We need to stop letting people cloak their ignorance and bigotry in the word "traditional."

Like "patriot," when you hear it, you know that there's going to be a whole heap of stupid coming.

I went to the another high school in the county (there only about 19,000 in the entire county). In the early 90s there were 82 people who graduated in my class. Out of those 82, there are now 3 openly out gay males that I can think of. There are at least 2 openly out lesbians. There was at least one woman who dated women for awhile but last I knew married a man. Then there were the guys who "did things" with other guys who are now married with children (I know some of them from personal experience).

I, for one, am glad that times and attitudes are changing.

Not as fast as I'd like to see them change, mind you, but we have come a L-O-N-G way as a society compared to when I was in high school.

I don't really know. Eventually, they will realize that traditional is synonymous with hatred and bigotry.

FTA: "There's no way to stop the haters at Sullivan High School from holding an independent prom for the special bigoted kids," he wrote. "But here's what we can do: we can make a noise so loud enough that all the queer kids at Sullivan High School hear it. Those kids need to know that there are people -- a lot of people -- who think this (expletive) is wrong."

Well, the first sentence sums up the real issue. Those who hate gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders are going to hold a private party someplace because they hate anyone that's different. Their churches, parents and friends support and enable their hatred.

As I often point out, and as seems to be true here as well, these people are speaking for the majority, not the minority.  This is the Christian majority speaking proudly about how they think the world should look.

"You're the REAL bigot!"

It's so weird seeing a Fark cliche' in real life.  Like the bizarre, "hilarious" insulting names for Barack Obama that merely aren't funny, they make absolutely no farking sense.

I guess "O'Berri" is the new hotness in Freeperville.

It has its spots for sure, but the under 40 people arent generally as ignorant as the assholes in TFA. To the subject of TFA-- downtown Indy has a very large and very active gay community that takes in a lot of these kids who are sorta cultural refugees from the smaller rural areas. My high school (actually in Eastern IN) was 120 square miles and I graduated with 92 in 85'. There wasnt one person out then and there, but I've seen 5 or so classmates in the Mass Ave district through the years. Also, our valedictorian is a married lesbian with a PhD living in northern CA.
