with no assistance from the Navy or the government, he's been left with no insurance, no job, and no security

Wow, perhaps leaving quickly to try to get the first book in wasn't such a smart idea.  He could have easily rode out the last 4 years on a desk job or something easy.  But he thought he'd profit off of a couple gunshots.  Being a Navy SEAL involves a lot of things.... including secrets and keeping your mouth shut.  Now he's a nobody who's endangered his fellow SEALs.  Bravo!

A call to a video-game company is unfruitful: "Right now we are pretty stacked with consultants," he's told

Dumbass!

Yeah, he's got 5 years of free VA healthcare, so I don't know what the Esquire article is talking about.  The VA has tons of jobs programs, and the Chamber of Commerce has 400 hiring fairs going on all over the country this year.  He needs to get on the google to get himself some help.

/still, those are some awesome stories that he can probably sell like Kramer did to J. Peterman.

As a veteran myself, I have no sympathy.  The Navy told you from the outset that if you don't stay in until retirement, you don't get paid.  He's got the farking GI Bill which is awesome now that they pay you BAH while you are taking classes (living allowance).  Other than that?  Same thing the rest of us got.  If you can't translate your military experience into a real world career, that's your problem, not the Navy's.  I love the whole "they said they would get me a job" whine.  Man up and find yourself a job buddy.

I'm sick and tired of all you libtards on Fark always pushing for the welfare queens.  Contribute to society.  Not just for 3 years, not for 10 years, not for 16 years, but for LIFE.  Quit trying to work the system and live off my hard earned paycheck.

Him getting out after 16 years is weird. A few possible explanations:

1. A medical issue that doesn't qualify as being injured in the line of duty, but keeps him from meeting the physical fitness standards. Most of this sort of thing results in a medical retirement, but sounds like he didn't get that.
2. High year tenure. If you don't make E-6 by 16 years, they kick you out.
3. He decided to quit.

Nobody "retires" at 16 years. If you get out and don't have a pension, you didn't retire, you quit or got kicked out.

That SEAL Trident qualifies you for very few jobs if you don't want to work security. You could be a diver, but SEALs generally aren't all that experienced in the sort of hard-suit work that commercial divers do.

"On the third floor, there were two chicks yelling at us and the point man was yelling at them and he said to me, "Hey, we need to get moving. These biatches is getting truculent." I remember saying to myself, Tuculent? Really? Love that word."

So SEALs really are exactly like any US special forces team portrayed in Hollywood?

How exactly is this guy going to prove that he shot Bin Laden, or was even on the mission, without breaking all kinds of security agreements that could put him in Leavenworth? My guess is the story is B.S.

And if its not, the whole thing about his left afterwards sounds fishy. Sure, he retired before his 20, but the V.A. is offering him nothing? The only job the Navy offered required him to give up his identity - to be a truck driver? There's a *lot* there not being told.

unreal.  I got something like $410 per month, then with COLA or whatever, it grew to about $650 (pre 9/11).  It was still free money basically, but.....yeah.  nowhere near what is now.

i was talking to a guy a few years ago, well after 9/11, and he was getting PAID.  tuition waivers, free books, BAH, the stipend had grown astronomically, and so on.  nowhere near what it was when I was getting it in the late 90s/early 00s.

Tell Me How My Blog Tastes: Yeah, he's got 5 years of free VA healthcare, so I don't know what the Esquire article is talking about.

That's not true at all.  Unless you have a disability or file for benefits because you're low income, you get nothing after you leave.  Back when I got out in 1994, things were different, but the system has changed dramatically in order to cut costs.

The only real answer is 3.    They guys on that team are all senior people that have already been on the teams for years.   Remember that crash that killed all those SEALs a few years back?  Every single one of those guys was at least an E-7.   If it were a fitness thing, they'd just put him on a program and get him back in shape.   If it were an injury, he'd  be on a medical disability.  And it doesn't take a whole lot of time or effort to get a medical disability from the military these days.

This guy is either full of shiat, or if he is the real dude, decided to bail and write a book and that didn't work out.

The Shooter-left the Navy last September, retiring after 16 years. That's four shy of the full 20...

You don't retire after 16 years - you're either given the boot or you quit.    Either way, STFU.  No one owes you anything special - you were doing you're farking job (the job you were trained and paid to do).

Yeah, it's unreal.  I did a couple semesters on the old one, and it was pretty good.  The new one, well, it makes it possible to actually go to school full time and live a real life.  It's a pretty sweet deal.

From www.globalresearch.ca:

Since the mainstream media are accustomed to withholding crucial and vital information from their addressees and usually propagate and disseminate what is in line with their imperialistic interests, not many people heard about Osama Bin Laden's taped statement which was released shortly after the 9/11 attacks took place. Here is what Bin Laden stated about the attacks. He astutely gave the clue to the main culprit behind the terrorist attacks and one could simply trace the footsteps of that perpetrator should some intelligence and cleverness were employed:

"I was not involved in the September 11 attacks in the United States nor did I have knowledge of the attacks. There exists a government within a government within the United States. The United States should try to trace the perpetrators of these attacks within itself, to the people who want to make the present century a century of conflict between Islam and Christianity. That secret government must be asked as to who carried out the attacks...
