Yeah. That'll happen in a predominantly anti-American climate such as Europe. It's about as likely as a Nazi becoming pope. And that'll never happen either, right?

If we need a Pope from New York, why not get one who returned his wallet.

I don't know the name, but I'm going to go way out on a limb here and predict that the next pope will be an archconservative who thinks that stopping gay marriage, birth control, and uppity nuns is WAY more important than feeding the hungry and nursing the sick. Or, god forbid, ensuring that child molesters get kicked out of the priesthood.

I know, call me crazy.

Fancy hats with matching color shoes? lots of gold? tricked out hats? giant posse? gaudy decorations at home? fear of getting shot in the street?

Come on. Its gotta be a black guy.

On a different note, on Paddy Power you can also bet on the next pope being Richard Dawkins.

They've put the odds at 666:1.

The Pope hasn't been the most powerful man in the world since @ 1533. He's hasn't even been the most powerful Catholic in the world since 1960.

Shhhh. Don't tell the non Catholics that. They think he can summon lightning with his staff and his Pope hat allows him to fly. Dodge bullets? Not so much. New technology verses old skills.

SuperNinjaToad: timswar: I've never thought of the Cardinals as the brightest group on the planet, but surely they wouldn't be dumb enough to put an asshole like Dolan in charge...

Right?

Why is he an asshole? pls cite examples when laying such a charge on a holy man.

Ponzholio: Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Argentina) +900
Cristoph Von Schoenborn (Austria) +700
Claudio Hummes (Brazil) +1200
Francisco Javier Errazuriz (Chile) +1400
Karl Lehmann (Germany) +1600
Cardiani Ruini (Italy) +2000
Attilio Cardinal Nicora (Roman Curia) +2000
Norberto Rivera Carrera (Mexico) +2000
Wilfred Napier (South Africa) +2000
Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino (Cuba) +2000
Ivan Dias (India) +2500
Angelo Sodano (Italy) +2500
Geraldo Majella Agnelo (Brazil) +4000
Lopez Rodriguez (Dominican Republic) +5000
Jean Marie Lustiger (France) +5000

Schoenborn is intriguing but that's a sucker's bet.  I like the value that Dias brings, as the first Indian pope would be good for the church, but don't sleep on Alamino.  He's taken some bold choices in Cuba and at +2000, that's a good value pick.  A lot of folks like Sodano but he hasn't paid his dues.  Lehman is the conservative choice but back-to-back Germans?  No way.  Stay away from that one.

I'm thinking of a parlay with either Dias or Agnelo (I really like this kid, he's got lots of upside) and Tiger Woods at the Accenture Match Play.  He traditionally plays pretty well and I think that could be a great value pick.  or maybe Errazuriz.  He's very versatile but has that old school convservatism that will "play" in Italy.  He's a bit unorthodox but i see some value there.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him shift to maybe +1300, maybe even +1200.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: sab6300: Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: sab6300: Is Obama eligible?

As a heretic, he is not.

How about Mitt?  He's white, super religious, and currently without employment.  We just had our first Sith Lord Pope, I think its time for our first Mormon Pope.

Even worse than Obama.

/I think Joe Biden is eligible, though.

Oh my god, can you imagine? The shirtless Pope washing his Trans Am in the Vatican driveway?

I'm betting we get our first Canadian Pope in the form of Marc Ouellet. Lots of pressure to choose a non-European, and this is a way for them to keep the papacy white and still give a nod to the rest of the world (without worrying about the anti-American sentiment surrounding Dolan).

I'd love to see the first black Pope though.

I'm calling it for Central or South America.  They can pick a conservative, which is in keeping with their recent history, but show some progressive thought by aiming a little darker.  Not BLACK darker, mind you.  Just a little tanner than the current Sith lord.

Which makes me wonder if Benny timed it so that a certain Cardinal (or Cardinals)  would still be eligible to vote in March before they turned 80.

i wonder how that will play in new york and boston.

I don't know, but that was something they were REALLY talking about last time, after JP2 died. They wound up going with a pretty bland and generic choice, many thought the decision was largely based on the fact that he wouldn't be pope too long. Maybe now they'll try their hip new pope strategy.

/or South American, maybe
