I'm betting we get our first Canadian Pope in the form of Marc Ouellet. Lots of pressure to choose a non-European, and this is a way for them to keep the papacy white and still give a nod to the rest of the world (without worrying about the anti-American sentiment surrounding Dolan).

I'd love to see the first black Pope though.

That's a very good point. It was going to be a Hillray v. 9ui11iani showdown, book it, done. No one really thought a black President was in the cards. This is a little bit different, though, in that the choice is (I would imagine) going to be about the direction of the church. Where they are trying to gain ground, what message they are trying to deliver, who is best for the church. Obama just sort of happened. No pun intended, he was a dark horse candidate, not unlike a certain little known Arkansas governor in the early 90s. This is going to be all about what a bunch of old priests think the direction of the church should be.

Only the Canadian media is touting Ouellet as a frontrunner. Frankly, RuPaul has a better chance of being elected than Ouellet. The inability to grow the church in North America pretty much kills any chance of the NA cardinals from being elected - whether they covered up molestation or not. Add in the very liberal bent of catholics in Quebec, which the Vatican sees as Ouellet's inability to influence his own flock. The smart money is on a pontif from South America or Africa.

Whoa, I haven't seen that many born in the 30s and 40s since my last car show.

You must not be in the midwest. Last show I went to filled 3 halls. The entire stock pre-1950 class consisted of 3 cars.

Unless they elect somebody that is going to start hanging motherfarkers by the neck until dead for molesting children, the Catholic Boy Molestation Society can go straight to hell as far as I'm concerned.

But that's not going to happen because the leadership in that organization is corrupt and straight up EVIL.

2013-02-11 12:59:23 PM

Ponzholio: Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Argentina) +900
Cristoph Von Schoenborn (Austria) +700
Claudio Hummes (Brazil) +1200
Francisco Javier Errazuriz (Chile) +1400
Karl Lehmann (Germany) +1600
Cardiani Ruini (Italy) +2000
Attilio Cardinal Nicora (Roman Curia) +2000
Norberto Rivera Carrera (Mexico) +2000
Wilfred Napier (South Africa) +2000
Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino (Cuba) +2000
Ivan Dias (India) +2500
Angelo Sodano (Italy) +2500
Geraldo Majella Agnelo (Brazil) +4000
Lopez Rodriguez (Dominican Republic) +5000
Jean Marie Lustiger (France) +5000

Schoenborn is intriguing but that's a sucker's bet.  I like the value that Dias brings, as the first Indian pope would be good for the church, but don't sleep on Alamino.  He's taken some bold choices in Cuba and at +2000, that's a good value pick.  A lot of folks like Sodano but he hasn't paid his dues.  Lehman is the conservative choice but back-to-back Germans?  No way.  Stay away from that one.

I'm thinking of a parlay with either Dias or Agnelo (I really like this kid, he's got lots of upside) and Tiger Woods at the Accenture Match Play.  He traditionally plays pretty well and I think that could be a great value pick.  or maybe Errazuriz.  He's very versatile but has that old school convservatism that will "play" in Italy.  He's a bit unorthodox but i see some value there.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him shift to maybe +1300, maybe even +1200.

Huck And Molly Ziegler: So why IS the pope resigning?

Honestly, I think the reason given (failing health) is probably true.  He took the job, but he later admitted that he prayed that God wouldn't let him be elected.  He's indicated in the past that he thinks that Popes should be able to resign for health reasons.  The guy is 85 and there are reports that he has some sort of neurological disease. I can't imagine the kind of stresses he must be under, but it's probably less than the POTUS, but more than the Queen of England.

If there's some connection to the pedophilia scandal, it's probably that he's not physically strong enough to deal with it effectively as a leader and that younger(!) blood needs to be brought in.

I really don't see the cardinals doing that.  I can't imagine any of the European or North American popes voting for an African pope.  The voting still is biased towards Europe and NA despite populations if memory serves.

Dolan?!  Pssh, please.  He wore out his welcome in Milwaukee, then got all but run out of St. Louis after the St. Stanislaus fiasco.  and don't even get STL folks started on the other mess he got caught in - redirecting weekly donations to fund Prop 8 fights in CA and anti-gay measures in Maine.

He may not have worn out his welcome yet in NYC, but there are whole swaths of the Midwest that wouldn't give him the time of day.

2013-02-11 01:06:02 PM
I don't know the name, but I'm going to go way out on a limb here and predict that the next pope will be an archconservative who thinks that stopping gay marriage, birth control, and uppity nuns is WAY more important than feeding the hungry and nursing the sick. Or, god forbid, ensuring that child molesters get kicked out of the priesthood.

I know, call me crazy.
