I think there will come a day when the phrase "Richard Pryor" is NSFW.

I would have to agree. Easily a candidate for the top 10.

You've got a little something on your nose there.

Some people were blessed with funny bones and could read you their grocery list and crack you up. Richard Pryor was one of these rare people.

Very complimentary of Steve Martin. I mean, I sort of expected that. But good to see it.

I don't think he was very funny. He had his moments, but saying dirty words and racist comments (how downtrodden the blacks and how evil the whites are) gets old quickly.

You're in luck, there's an According To Jim marathon starting soon on the USA Network.

My suggestion, give him another listen.  His humor is self-deprecating, brutally honest and sometimes cringe-worthy.  But always very real.  His material on relationships, family, self-analysis.   Pure gold.   Listen to the early stuff.

There's some truth in what you say but considering his background - starting with being raised in a whore house - I don't know if you could be funny any other way.

As for the interviewer: no idea.

Hey Mr Interviewer - Richard Pryor is high and riffing.

SHUT THE fark UP and let him go, man.

His problem here is that they can't use any of this footage on his TV show. He needs a couple of coherent answers, preferably without any words that have to be bleeped out.

I'd give the crown to Chris Rock.... I'm not saying he's the funniest man, in general... (I am), but he's the funniest person who is a stand-up comedian, who i'm aware of.

I have the utmost respect for Chris Rock, and love some of his specials... but it seems that lately his stuff has become repetitive.

Yeah. I couldn't believe the interviewer replied, "We've always got Dom DeLuise".

WTF?

Well, that was clearly not 1977, since they were making references to the Iran hostage crisis.

Carlin > Pryor > Rock

Pryor's first stand up movie, Live on Sunset Strip, was pretty good.

The second one, I was surprised that it was released, but considering that times and the cost to film (at the time) these specials this was the only shot they had because the audience was a lot different this time around and wouldn't stay quiet.

You could probably come up with another half dozen on that level if you really tried.  Stand up comedy tends to attract tortured genius, I think.

On his best night, I think his peers and contemporaries would probably rate Pryor as the 'greatest' stand up artist.

Dane Cook is not a comedian. That's the joke.

Pryor's pretty good, up there with Carlin. (Was Carlin a white Pryor? or was Pryor a black Carlin?)

Don't forget Robin Williams and Emo Phillips.

"Obviously" NSFW? That charming fellow from Brewster's Millions and Superman III?
