I'm kicking myself for not picking up Corey Crawford in fantasy hockey.  This team looks scary good.  I only wish they could be a tad better on the power play, 'cause then they'd be flawless.

Calgary Flames: 28th.

Ouch.

Well, that craptacular performance on Saturday night in Vancouver was pretty horrid. I feel bad for Irving, that game could have been 8-1.

I'm not trying to rub it in, but this is kinda funny:

Is anybody any good on the power play anymore? Seems like this is the age of the penalty kill.

They are too patient, they just move the puck around the perimeter for most of the PP.

Can anyone offer me hope for the Sabres?  After watching them turn the puck over 97.62 times in the defensive zone last night I am getting depressed.  Is this the end of the Regier/Ruff era?

I just don't know what to make of the on/off Pens

Really don't like they can't eek out a few participation-point losses

Good to see the B's bounce back after that bed-shiatting against the Sabres last week to get a nice win last night against them.

Ruff has clearly lost the team.  He doesn't know what to do, or he's lost passion and interest, or the team has tuned him out.

Whatever the case, Ruff needs to go, and that is becoming more evident daily.  I think Pegula knows it too.  His respect for Ruff is too great to fire him mid-season (especially in a short season with only a few dozen games left), but I suspect that, barring a dramatic change, Ruff will be let go in the offseason.

The Sabres do have a bright side though.  The team has talent.  They are severely underperforming (due to bad coaching or whatever), but that means that this roster is capable of much better.  And the prospect pool is good.  Regier isn't a bad GM - he drafts well, and generally gets the better of his trades.  His main fault is his over-loyalty to Ruff, but that only will last until Pegula/Black order him to make a coaching change.

Personally, I like the young core of talent in the system and look forward to watching them develop into a good team over the next few years.  Foligno, Hodgson, Grigorenko, Armia, Girgensons, Brennan, McNabb, Pysyk, McCabe.

Have to say it's been fun watching the Hawks dominate like this. Especially with the drubbing of the douchey Coyotes and revenge on the classless Torres.

It hurts dropping the Blues this low, given that they're my preseason pick to come out of the West. But they're not playing well right now, dropping four straight (0-3-1). I can feel Ken Hitchcock's fury a time zone away.

And two of those were to the Wings. Sadface.

Senators can't consistently generate offense without Spezza, so they'll probably continue the current trend of losing or winning by one goal.

If Anderson gets hurt or cools off anytime soon, we'll get a high draft pick.

Some good points.  They have some great young players, but I am suspicious of their D.  Hopefully they can find a coach who can keep the backend fundamentals higher on the priority list.  I'm also upset about Scott.  Instead of trying to add grit throughout the roster, they just brought in a bigger slower version of Rob Ray and thought that would work.  He's farking useless out there besides punching.  I'm bummed though, I don't want to see Lindy go, but I agree, it is looking like time.

Anecdotal ...

It's been like this since the salary cap was instituted. Teams started putting their better offensive players (also known as their better players, in general) on the kill. So, not only do you have more talent out there for 30-120 seconds, but the opposing unit sees these players and knows one fark up means it is Ilya Kovalchuk coming back the other way and not, say, Jay Pandolfo. It tightens your butthole up a bit.

I'm obviously thrilled with the Blackhawks, Kane has been unbelievable. Despite their recent slump, I'm still holding out hope for the Blues (my other favorite team).

Not to jinx it, but is anyone else still getting free Center Ice?

Yeah, the enforcer is a position which may be going extinct.

On the other hand, I can't deny that it brought a huge grin to my face watching Scott completely KO Shawn Thornton the other week.  After watching the Sabres get generally pushed around and bullied by the Bruins the last few years, it brought a large amount of satisfaction watching one of our guys grab a tough guy in black-and-gold and absolutely lay him out.

Bruins are looking good... Got some key guys back this week.

Power Play is still shiatty. Don't know how that happens when you're a dominant team 5 on 5, but whatever... They won the Cup without much of a Power Play.

Glad they got those two points back from Buffalo last night.

Kaleta got the better of Campbell last night, too... No problems in the toughness dept. for the Sabres, anyway.

Ahead of only Calgary, Columbus and Washington. Oof. Not all that surprising though. The Avalanche were at best a bubble team this season with everyone staying healthy (or signing a goddamn offer that is more than fair). With the injuries already piling up (as they do annually - I swear there's a curse) and O'Reilly experimenting in taking bad advice, I'm prepared to write this season off. But this will be the last one in which I can give the Avs a pass.

Still way sloppy hockey for this time of year. Lots of sketchy pre-season calibre play. But it's getting better.

The teams that had the bulk of their players (ie: Chicago and San Jose) play in Europe were the ones in gameshape the most and exploded out of the starting blocks. Rest of the league should be rounding into form by about now and the games should be much closer and tighter.

When Stempniak is your leading scorer, you've got issues. And I say this as a dartmouth grad who had the pleasure of watching him light it up almost every game in college. He's a solid player, but where the hell is the top line?

No, but their defensive play is a trainwreck.  About the worst I've ever seen.  And outside of the Vanek line, nobody is producing.

I've been a Lindy Ruff fan for a long time, and defended him many times against calls for his dismissal, but it's painfully obvious to pretty much everyone now that the team needs a change behind the bench.

Yeah, that makes the start all the more ridiculous.  They've played 12 games, 10 of which have been on the road, and are still 10-0-2.  Yikes.

I grew up in MO, moved to Chicago when I was 26.

It's awful, I know. I can't watch them play each other, although I had to go to one when my son's Mite team played at intermission.

You won two cups. There's no curse.

Curse is when the hockey gods magically transmogrify Roberto Luongo into Dan Cloutier for important games.
