President aint mandated to actually go before Congress to give the address. Giving the address in person is just tradition. Clapping is also tradition. Why do you beshiat over tradition?

Why the worry?  The last President in danger of getting the clap was Clinton.

could we also ban ex-senators from speaking in public, unless they are a candidate for office?

"One of the best things about not being in the Senate anymore is not having to sit in that room and either stand up and clap every 15 seconds, or sit on your hands for the whole thing,"

Well you stupid, syncopathic coont, you could have been an adult instead. Turns out adults clap for things they like, things that were really good. Children sit on their hands.
Were you worried that you might clap for the black guy? LOL

Some traditions should be evaluated for how stupid and backwards they are and whether or not they have anything to add or if they take away. Addressing congress in person: a nice tradition, doesn't take away from the address. Doubling the time it takes to deliver an address so that your party can stand and clap after every 10th word: doesn't add to the address, makes it laborious to watch as a citizen.

Actually, I'd be in favor of the clapping ending for Obama and every other subsequent President.  Let the guy get more than two sentences out at a time.  You don't have to farking clap at everything.  Hold your applause to the end.  Let the guy (or woman in the future) talk, get through what they have to say, and wrap it the fark up.

2013-02-11 11:58:02 AM
Give everybody a little device that has a button. They push the button every time they would have clapped. Then you can make a graph showing how many people would have clapped at which point. It would be a fun, pointless exercise.

2013-02-11 12:24:18 PM
Let's replace the clapping with calls of "hear, hear!" or "harumph!" if you don't like what he's saying. That would be better.

2013-02-11 12:30:10 PM
I hope they have long standing ovations for the President at every opportunity.  I love to see Republicans sitting down and scowling when people are clapping all around them for basic stuff like:

"teachers good"
"equal rights good"
"war bad"

because they look like idiots

Lando Lincoln: Let's replace the clapping with calls of "hear, hear!" or "harumph!" if you don't like what he's saying. That would be better.

That would take far too much time.  The President would have to stop, point to an offending party and say "I didn't get a harrumph outta that guy", then the VP would have to say "Give the President harrumph".  The offender would  acquiesce, and Obama would admonish him with "You watch your ass".

Yeah, and in context, it sounds like she hated standing and clapping as much as she hated sitting on her hands. It looks to be very follow-the-leader on both sides, anyway. It's literal grandstanding.

Growing up, I attending mormon church, conferences, gatherings ... everything. They don't clap at all. So you can get up and give the best damn speech ever and at the end all you get is a kid in the back crying, and maybe a cough or 2. Having now seen other churches and how much energy can be wrought with a good speech, I think I want to side with the idea of applause as warranted- not forced. Should the speech be a snoozer, then the audience reply should reflect that.

I'm remembering Mars back in ... 02? 04? When was that? Stupid. It should have been followed with laughter.

Didn't the 'tradition' of clapping every 5 seconds during the SOTU get started during Clinton's years, anyway?

Make Congresscritters hold cream  pies in each hand.  That'll end the applause.

2013-02-11 01:20:49 PM
Fine.  The next time a GOP president is in the White House, hunt this turd down and beat him over the head with it.  "What about now? What about now?"

I think the over / under on that one is 8.5 seconds of silence until "No Comment."

Actually, I could see what she's getting at.
Think about it, you're sitting there listening to this guy drone on, because you're a senator, and you're expected to show up.

But inside you're really thinking:
"Christ, won't this guy ever shut up?"
"Kickoff's in 45 minutes.  Even if he stops right now, the traffic will make me late"
"Man, I really shouldn't have eaten Mexican.  Maybe if I just let off the pressure a little bit I won't shart."
"These idiots are standing up again?  I just want to get out of here!"
"OMG WTF?  Now he's breaking out powerpoint!  Where's the nearest secret service goon, maybe if I make a loud enough threat he'll shoot me."

2013-02-11 01:25:43 PM
This is a great idea. The clapping is horrible and takes away from the speech. Shut the fark up and let the president speak.

2013-02-11 01:27:12 PM
Why don't we just say screw it and do it like "Prime Ministers Questions" in England?

Then I'd actually watch the SOTU.

The bigger question is why now?  She's had years to bring this issue to the forefront.

I want a "You lie!" moment again, because I bet Obama's been sitting on one HELL of a zinger ever since Willy's outburst.

// but if he uses the tired old "Do I come down to where you work and slap the dick outta your mouth?", he's lost my vote

2013-02-11 01:32:11 PM
Actually... as a citizen I'd rather prefer if the state of the union were treated like the serious, constitutionally-mandated annual update on how things are going that it literally is instead of a goddamned pep rally, as well.  All the congressmen need to damned well shut the fark up while the briefing is running, whether they're feeling the impulse to waste everyone's time by clapping or waste everyone's time by booing.

2013-02-11 01:34:25 PM
I don't know about not clapping but rein it in folks.  I giggled all the way through the 09 and 10 SOTU.  Pelosi jumping up to clap every 10 words just struck me as funny... it was like her seat was a spring shooting her back up.

I'd be fine if they stopped all of the clapping for a SOTU. Of course if they managed to do it this time you know there would be "No one claps for Obama! Some say he is the hated president of all time!" headlines almost immediately.

2013-02-11 01:37:43 PM

And another thing that grinds my gears.  It is bringing in a bunch of sappy story people to be pointed out in the crowd... what the heck does that have to do with the state of our country.... I dont care is little suzy created a letter writing campaign to get people to flush their toilets less.

I get that.  Golf claps from the politicians would be fine.  Standing ovations for every burp and fart is banana republic showboating.

they should really get rid of the entire exercise.
or do it like the brits and make it an adversarial question and answer thing that happens once a month.
or just abolish the presidency all together.
use a roman dictatorship election if we ever get attacked. stay the f*ck out of other countries business that way.
let the committees run the regulatory functions of potus.
