i've been stuck in a rut losing weight. i've lost 65 lbs already. been holding steady  (roughly) for two years. i run 15-25 miles a week. i travel a lot for work and the diet is what is probably holding me back. my kids asked me why i keep running. I told them I really like to eat. if i want to eat what i want or close to it...i have to exercise. the key is when i can't exercise is to hold back on the food.

its not like i'm scarfing down junk all the time but every once in while..i want some chips or some other stuff that i can't normally have.

need to jump start the exercise to get thru this holding point.

i would not even start on this drug though. once you stop...it comes back. i really don't want to be on a medication for life...that helps exploit unhealthy behaviour.

Have you tried weight training?  Increasing your muscle mass and density has a huge effect on increasing your resting metabolism.  Adding muscle now can melt fat later on down the road.

I'm guessing the journalists neglected to add a proper qualifier in there. It says they made the mice fat by übering up their diet, and lost it while consuming the same diet on the medication but when the medication was stopped they gained it back. They never said if they dialed back the diet or not. I'm guessing not.

As described in the article, often people have trouble losing weight because dialing back the calories often tends to dial back the metabolism. This would be used to get through that, get to a healthy weight at a non weight gaining level of caloric intake.

I mean, ideally. I'm sure plenty of ppl will just use it to maintain mediocre weight while stuffing themselves like hogs.

I'd probably use it to drop 20 lbs and then limit myself to a weight maintaining caloric count.   The weight loss caloric count is the hard part.

It's not ad hominem to point out that you haven't invalidated any arguments with your little anecdote, but I know what you're trying to do here and it won't work.

Using a drug for another purpose it wasn't originally intended for is not new.
For instance, Rogaine was originally intended to be used for heart problems, but the men who used it reported that their hair grew back.  So it became the miracle hair regrowth drug we now know today.

Now I know why your mom stayed slim all these years.

Being obese makes it difficult to do serious cardio. You get tired faster and it's physically painful shuffling around excess weight quickly. Having a way to directly melt off the pounds through increased metabolism would be a minor miracle. As you get lighter, you can exercise more and more without putting undue stress on your joints and running out of breath, so your natural metabolic rate will rise. Combine it with strength training and you could end up with a metabolism that would support a healthy weight with a reasonable diet, even without the drugs. The only people who would be hooked for life would be those expecting to drop tons of weight and continue living like hogs.

I lost a bunch of weight a year ago by cutting excess sugar out of my diet and adding light exercise daily, and then hit a plateau where I'd either have to start exercising a lot harder (difficult for me as I damaged a knee a few years ago and the extra weight puts a lot of stress on it) or go on a really restrictive diet plan, which has failed everyone I know that's tried it. I'm trying to build muscle now to help burn more fat, but I would love being able to "cheat" with a drug like this.

Sounds like a uncoupler. Those work great, until you end up getting a bit too much, then it's a pretty gruesome death.

Also, you end up with lots of free radical generation from it, which isn't all that good for you. We used to have some uncouplers that were classified war gases, really butt awful stuff.

Cthulhu: you can do this 'at home' with readily available uncouplers, right now. If you're very very very careful, they'll work for you, no doubt. If you # up, you can die a miserable death: there's basically no way of stopping it once it starts, other than being hooked to a hypothermia machine and given a dantrolene IV, which DID work one time for one patient.

Also, you will sweat like a peeg and feel like you're glowing all the time, especially at first when your volume to surface area ratio is bad. You also need a heart that's in pretty good shape, also your kidneys and liver will take a mild beating, and some people that push it too hard end up with early cataracts. But it'll work. Your search term of choice is: 2,4-dinitrophenol, or more simply, DNP.

In truth, people take this stuff all the time and get away with it, but it requires a steady hand and a lot of self-control with the titration. Any "more is better, and lots more is lots better" is an invitation for Darwin to pay a call.
