Holy fark.  Looks like some sort of mechanical failure during the RTT.

Popcorn Johnny: Looks like some sort of mechanical failure during the RTT.

Yeah, looks like he lost cyclic right at the top, nothing he could do. This is one case where it was good to have a failure near ground, if that had happened at alt they'd be toast. Even so if that had been a commercial heli they'd be dead, pretty sure that pushed the armored cockpit tub of the Cobra right to its limits.

Looked again, he lost the tail rotor.

Two things:

1) Holy shiat.

2) There's a Top Gear Korea? Awesome.

I'm not sure about that, it could just appear to be moving slower due to the shutter speed of the camera.  Here's a video where the shutter speed was perfectly in sync with the main rotor.

It's always possible but I'm pretty sure it was the tail rotor. He gets to the top, you can see the tail rotor just go bang and start spinning down and he can't swing the nose around so he's stuck in a nose low severe bank that he's not going to recover from. Looks like he yanks back and left on the cyclic from there which was pretty sweet so he hits more or less on the gear.

2013-02-11 02:38:08 AM
I'll be interested to hear the cause once it's determined.  If it is a tail rotor failure, just another example of the superiority of a NOTAR system.

The Top Gear people are a bunch of wankers.

There have been sporadic attempts to internationalize the show, but the problem is that everyone just wants Clarkson, Hammond and May. Australia and Russia saw local Top Gear's crash and burn for that exact reason and that's why it took so long to get an American version.

Same reason QI can't get internationalized. Everyone wants Stephen Fry and nobody can pay the rights fees for the images used, so nobody gets anything.

Top gear is dangerous and should be outlawed.

No one needs attack helicopters, they only exist to kill or to crash.

hmm....that Top Gear pilot sure looks like the same guy from that stupid movie Fire Birds (youtube) with Nick Cage. If it is, that dude seems to be pretty good at wrecking choppers. Or maybe just doing DIAF scenes and/or getting blown up in mid-air by melodramatic actors.

stop farking around with weapons, killing machines should be out killing , not showing off racing cars, it should be the only tine you see a cobra gunship is either if you are flying it or have 3 seconds left in your life.

Yeah...I can't watch it anymore either. It was fun for a while, but the Euro-Jingoism by Clarkson is really tiring and just plain grating.

For the longest time I confused Clarkson with Gordon Elliot and could not figure out why GE had become so bitter since his days in NYC. Then I looked him up. He seems to be responsible for the artery hardening of America by producing a few of the Paula Deen shows.

Better than that arse Clarkson though.

That helicopter crash was the most original bit of Top Gear that hasn't been done by  Top Gear UK, Top Gear Germany, Top Gear US, Top Gear Australia, Top Gear Al Queda, Top Gear Lichtenstein......

Yeah, I'm thinking he's the go-to, bad-guy chopper pilot for Hollywood.  I feel like I've seen him in a number of films, though I'm having difficulty getting IMDB to spit out the goods.

Looked like all tail rotor. Tail was in the wrong position.

Of course, I'm all sim and RC but I have crashed just like that so many times when learning orientation. Oh and have had a few tail motors go out.

/think i'll go fly

Different missions require different levels of maneuverability. Tail rotor = most maneuverable at low speeds.

The very minor differences in reaction time do not affect the maneuverability of the chopper.  The biggest knock against a NOTAR is the difference it makes in taking off and landing in hot weather.

Aside from the fact that a NOTAR equipped helicopters probably can't maneuver like this to begin with, a NOTAR system that fails at low speed isn't going to be particularly different from a tail rotor. Really, their only advantage is that the anti-torque system's parts are internal.

BTW, the recent Top Gear US had a "in memory of some soldier" at the end. Did someone get killed during taping or what?

Bert Rhine who played the character Eric Stoller is the guy from Firebirds, IMDB doesnt have anything else for him tho.

It took a long time but i'm finally starting to like Top Gear US. They had a funny one recently where they crossed the border into Mexico.

Top Gear Korea sounds interesting.

No, car crash a few days before the episode aired.

The Marine version does, this one was an Army model and is only a single engine.

Don't know what you're talking about. Clarkson is pretty outspoken with his anti-European views. If you watch Top Gear and get a sense of Euro-Jingoism either you're watching the wrong show or you don't know what those words mean.

The latest episode aired yesterday.. he repeatedly referred to Europe as being the "civilized world" and US being uncivilized. He does have some anti-european views but he definitely seem to view the US in a more negative light than almost any other developed nation. But it's always pretty funny when he refers to Americans as being fat and stupid.. because he's about as fat and stupid as they come.

But he's entertaining and I'm a big fan of the show. That doesn't overshadow the fact that he's a pompous idiot.

I've never seen a heli that could snap it's tail around as fast as a heli with a tail rotor. But I'm used to split second 180s with RC helis. :)

I used to hate working on tail rotors more than anything, especially when it came to checking the tracking with a grease pencil taped to a stick.

Not a tail rotor failure, but locked up cyclic controls.

NTSB Report.

Minor injuries to both pilots.

The India special was especially unbearable. Far too much time spent on non-car-related antics. I fast-forwarded through the reception.
Why on Earth would they think that's the kind of thing people watch their show for ?

Also, never watched the US show. Mainly because I'm too used to the UK one. Is it any good ?
