Oddly enough, for once the random "what that may look like" in the article was actually helpful this time.  Pencil shavings from one of those little manual ones are way different from what you get using an electric sharpener.  If the teacher had dumped in the ultra-fine, nearly powderized shavings from an electric sharpener, the kid may have been in actual danger.

The estimate I found on Google is that we have 3,700,000 teachers in the US. The fact that some of them do stupid things every so often shouldn't really surprise anyone, just by the sheer force of large numbers.

Assume that every teacher does exactly one profoundly stupid news-worthy action in their entire career. Assume the teaching career is 50 years long. Assume that the odds of those teachers doing their profoundly stupid act are uniformly random across all the days in their entire career. That would give a per-day probability of doing something profoundly stupid of 1/18250 per teacher. Then, given our 3.7 million teachers, we should see an expected rate of profoundly stupid news-worthy acts of roughly 200 events per day. It's a miracle we manage to not talk about this constantly.

I'm more surprised that it took a teacher to pull a prank on that kid. I don't know where you guys went to school, but where I went that kid would hang his mouth open for about 2 seconds before someone threw a paper ball into it.

Actually, the professions that have the people with the lowest intelligence are prison guards and elemntary school teachers, so this should not really a surprise at all, especially when you consider that the newly hired elementary school teachers of the last 20 has managed to drop even lower and yet their pay keeps on increasing.  This country sure pays a lot for incompetentcy and idiosy.

i'd venture the lad has a filthy mouth on a daily basis and that day in particular his dialogue was extensive. intelligent educated adults, especially experienced educators who have to have incredible patience to put up with the riff raff parents send to school these days, would not do something like this just for shiats and giggles.
