It has to be art you die for. Luckily for us, reality TV doesn't make the cut.

The 3 died in a helicopter crash while filming a new reality TV series in California. The yet untitled military show is being produced for Discovery Channel by JD Roth and Todd Nelson's Eyeworks USA (formerly 3 Ball Prods.), whose credits include NBC's The Biggest Loser.

Why am I somehow not surprised to see the name JD Roth attached to this? He's kinda been heading in this direction for a long, long time.

All three victims of the helicopter crash have now been officially identified: pilot David Gibbs, 59, of Valencia; cameraman Darren Rydstrom, 45, of Whittier; and cast member Michael Donatelli, 45, of Indiana. Donatelli's background is unclear though there is a former elite Special Forces Army officer-turned-private contractor by that name listed in Indiana.

Oh, not only is it a military show where this happened, one of the goddamned cast members died. Of a military show. Nice work there.

To say the least, I think we can go ahead and assume this show is not going to be making it to air.

Well, one was a pilot and one was a cameraman, so we can't get too happy about this just yet.

Helicopters should be outlawed for civilian use.  They only exist to kill or to crash.

The military and law enforcement should be allowed to have them.

I actually knew the cameraman Darren, we met in the mai tai bar in Honolulu and had a few drinks together, so long random stranger in the bar.

its strange,  women will get on their knees and throw panties at you if you are on, or have anything to do with television

Well, to be fair to the military guy, he's not the one who was piloting at the time.  That being said, given how little I like reality TV, I'm hoping that you're right about this show following the chopper down.

Well, if everybody had helicopters............

I just can't help but feel that this tragedy could have been avoided if Discovery would've spent their time on something other than yet another lame reality show..

1. Is the obvious tag snowed in? This is the direction these shows are going.

2. is there a readable article to link to? 3 rd update, 2nd update, updated...for someone who hasn't been following this from the start and isn't ready for updates, where's the actual story?

That is some powerful derp right there. Its painfully obvious how completely clueless you are. Cars should be banned, they only exist to crash.

While I don't like weak gun control analogies, I like people who miss the joke even less.

The "talent" that was killed in the crash was a 20-year vet of Special Forces and Delta, with multiple tours in Iraq.

Kind of an irony that the guy survived so many military chopper rides only to get killed on a stupid farking reality show.

RIP Mr. Donatelli

I don't think 'reality' is a descriptive enough term anymore. In my mind, reality shows have become so ubiquitous that they're almost a third major category of show now after scripted and unscripted. You go to Television Without Pity, they've found that 'reality' doesn't narrow it down enough, and split it into three categories: competitive reality (e.g. Survivor, Hell's Kitchen), how-to reality (e.g. Mythbusters, Pawn Stars) and candid reality (e.g. Real Housewives, Our America With Lisa Ling).

On that understanding, I have no problem with reality shows as a thing. They're a medium like everything else in the creative arts. It's on the creator to make something of that medium.
