And I'm done. Yep, the NYT - can't figure out how to make that paywall pay, can't convince the last two generations to pay attention, can't work out how "journalism" works in the era of "Associated Press Regurgitation". Fark 'em.

Don't they already do this? I pretty much don't read the print edition anymore but it seems like their website regularly has restaurant/bar/concert reviews.

The Chicago Tribune has something similar with the Red Eye. It's mostly junk, but people read it cause it's free.

Two problems:
1) Their print audience has and always will be 40+ and making at least a quarter mil a year.
2) The younger people read it and delude themselves into thinking they make that much.

Oh, and who my age (25, could pass for "hipster") actually feels the need to pay for news? My generation seems to think everything is free.

Maybe if they pulled some "by invite only: exclusive news" crap, because I see friends falling for that way too often.

Trying to revamp an idea from the earlier generations to work for the current generation won't work. We have a local rag that caters to the younger crowds but they print information that is tailored for local entertainment and events so it always has a fan base. The local regional news paper tried to devote a section to the same crowd with disastrous results. It reminded people of a retiree trying to explain last weeks news and events with decades old slang. It was humorous but that was about it.

So it's Gothamist but you have to pay for it? Yeah, that's going to catch on.

When it's labeled as "trendy", it's as far from it as you can possibly get.

I'm 23 and have paid access to the New York Times website. So here's at least one member of that demographic who'll be giving them money for the foreseeable future.

And no, a dumbed down version does not appeal to me. The brand of the Times is strong because it's about the only US paper around today that decided they would screw that whole 7th grade reading level thing the rest of the newspaper industry was doing and provide serious, in depth reporting. I was reading the full strength product in high school, they can shove their patronizing, watered down gossip rag right back up their... Okay, maybe not that strong, but I won't be giving this thing a second glance if they do roll it out.

You know what would be cool? A Facebook newspaper. It would come out once a day, and have EVERYTHING posted on FB that day. Probably be the size of 3 phone books. But you would have a hardcopy, so no electronic device or wi-fi needed.
