Perhaps someone should be less worried about Dorner and more worried about what's going on in the LAPD. It's almost as if the LAPD wants to ensure Dorner never makes it to trial.

Great job, LAPD! Clearly, the best way to deal with this situation is to make the general populace think that maybe Dorner has a farking point about the LAPD.

I don't condone any of the violence brought up in this whole issue, but after reading his manifesto, you have to hope that this brings about a huge amount of culture change in the LAPD and police departments in general.  If not to eliminate senior officers' entitlements and lack of oversight, at least in how they deal with the public.  The utter callousness he mentions about "body pictures" and deaths from crime meaning nothing but overtime to officers should incite rage in the public.

If his manifesto is to be believed, every citizen should be pushing for change.  Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if after this someone could win the mayor's job solely on an LAPD reform platform.

Of course in the real world, any organization (not just police) dealing with a formerly internal problem that has spilled out to the real world would probably just close ranks and bring organizational xenophobia to batshiat crazy levels, much like the LAPD has done.

No good can come out of this. The FBI seriously needs to step in and take control of this mess before citizens get hurt from their vigilante cops.

SEVEN cops pump out +- 50 rounds and NONE of them hit the "target" (driver).

I'm still waiting for a logical explanation of how the police actions in CA are anything less than attempted murder.  I'm all for Dorner taking a bullet, but the police in these last two incidents weren't shooting at Dorner.  In fact, they didn't know WHO they were shooting at.  Their goal was to kill the people in the vehicles, regardless of actual identity.

Hard to tell, and it really depends on how serious he is. If he's going full throttle on his little counter insurgency campaign, then it makes total sense for him to lay low for a few days while the various police departments run themselves ragged doing overtime and chasing down every small lead. They've got literally hundreds of officers just pulling guard duty for the LAPD brass. Their schedules are not designed for this.

As soon as everyone's frazzled and ready to ease off a bit, bang - hit a target that they weren't expecting. Kick the whole thing back into high gear. All the while, the public is increasingly convinced that the cops are a bunch of incompetent bullies.

I never said they did and mentioned in another thread that the officers involved in the shootings should never see the streets again.  That's a long farking way from serving 20 years in prison.

No, it's not.  They fired their weapons on individuals that they had not identified as wanted suspects.  They just fired on a vehicle (and were so bad at it they missed, despite cops being expected and trained to hit what they shoot at and only shoot at what needs to be shot).  They were out-of-control, badge-wearing thugs who had no interest in justice.  They just wanted to kill and apparently didn't care who because they didn't bother to identify who they were shooting at.  If they had killed somebody, 20 years would be about right.  But since they didn't, 8 years should be okay... but tack on 4 more because they did it under the auspices of the Police for 12 and that's about right in this case.

Does putting 80lb glossy paper in the finicky printer kill somebody?  Yes?  Then by all means, lock him up!

Along with the authority to carry a weapon at work is the responsibility to use it correctly.  If you shrug off misuse as "just a mistake" enough times, you've also eroded the authority those officers should have.  When the misuse is egregious, and possibly fatal, as in shooting at vehicles that somewhat resemble your target vehicle before you identify or even view the driver, you put every single person in the area at risk.  Light up your cop lights, pull the guy over.  If he's your bad guy he'll run, which is dangerous of course, but so is shooting at a vehicle driven by somebody you haven't even seen.  This is farked up on so many levels.

Plus, if you carry a gun and decide to use it, shouldn't you hit your target a couple of times?  How many rounds were fired in both incidents and only 2 hit an old lady's back, and that didn't kill her.  shiat, don't come policing around me!  Hell, all of the targets were in the cabs of pickups, one behind a deflated airbag!  How hard is that?  I can't wait for the public, on-air testimony of these dumb-ass 'peace officers' explaining why unloading their weapons was the right idea.

With what you know regarding this case, what leads you to believe that this man would be unaware of the weather conditions in and around the San Berbard mountain area that he would drive all the way up there, torch his truck, apparently the same truck the police are still shooting at whenever they see it, and then trek off into the forest to freeze to death? I'm not following the story that closely, but I thought it was a simple traffic stop by one cruiser gone wrong. If there were 7 officers firing its even worse. Where did the rest of the shots go? I also count about 30 holes. This is a busy city not Nam. Excessive, no self control. I'm not anti-cop and certainly no fan of the psycho that they are chasing, but if you're going to use deadly force in an urban setting, use some sense.

So you're equating a screw up at work by clogging a crappy printer with a screw up at work that could leave several innocents dead?  Firing a gun doesn't automatically kill somebody, but the likelihood that it will is millions of times morelikely than farking up office supplies.  Cops who fire on unidentified people because they're in somewhat similar vehicles have no excuse, not even "but there's a guy who's targeting cops".  If that scares you, go work somewhere else.  Don't abrogate your constitutional duty because you're about to shiat your pants.  You're a farkING COP, it's your job to identify the right guy and deal with him appropriately.  You're supposed to be trained to do exactly that!  How did the first set of cops stop him and let him go, but the second decided to ram his car?  That's some quality communication between field units and the home office when all they have is radios, cell phones, and internet-connected in-dash computers.  I'll bet that the "split seconds available to them" was more like a few minutes as they responded to reports of a stopped pickup.  These cops are farkups (not just LAPD, apparently), and while the Dorner asshole is in no way justified in his actions, he's at least shown a light on the asshole farkups.

At least these cops were too inept to actually hit anybody fatally.  So we got that going for us.

A cop buddy of mine told me about 20 years ago that the cops from the generation before him almost always went into the job for the power and authority.  He even joked that they were identifiable by big, mountain-gorilla guts and mustaches.  His generation generally went into the cop profession to help people (he was a journalist first, but a journalist sees the bad stuff and can't do anything about it like a cop can).  But this is a suburb of Kansas City, and nothing like LA or Chicago where, he said, almost nobody wants to be a cop except for the power/authority freaks.  We can attrition-out of the power freaks, given time, but can LA?

And who thinks that the LAPD re-opening his grievance case will produce anything worthwhile?  It should be the California Bureau of Investigation (or whatever they're BI is called) or the FBI if the Fed can be given jurisdiction.  If the LAPD (and maybe surrounding PDs as well) are even a little bit as dysfunctional, corrupt, and dangerous as he claims, they can't be the ones to do the investigation.  Don't get me wrong, his exposure of the Departments' possible screwedupness is good, but he's done it in about the worst possible way.  No excusing his choice of methods to alert us.

I don't know what Dorner's history or military training is, but he could go to ground for a week or two, pop up and kill a cop or two, then drop out again.  He'd probably have to have help to do that, but it fits his Robin Hood role.  If he decides to give himself up, which is only likely so he can have his literal day in court, he can only do it by contacting an attorney who will be by his side with cameras and journalists to make sure he doesn't 'suicide' and makes it to court.  I hope he does that before he kills again.

You need a scorecard to follow this story but: (1) Dorner was perfectly aware of the weather conditions in the S.B. Mts, he had survival gear in his truck. But news stories in the past day or two have added the information that his truck, off on a Forest Service fire road, turned out to have a broken axle which very much suggests he was forced to stop short of wherever he was headed. Meaning he had to improvise with whatever he could carry. (2) The LA Times story in TFA is describing something that happened on Thursday, long before Dorner's burnt truck was discovered.

I'm betting that Krieghund will turn out to be right. Though if Dorner decided to take himself out of the game, I'd bet that he did so in the most out-of-the-way place he could find, figuring the search for him would have to continue basically forever.

This is just insane.  I have no hate for the police and I'm certain there are plenty of good officers but there is just no way to justify this.  It sends the message that if you are driving a truck similar to what Dorner had and a police officer spots you, you will probably be shot at.

It's been a while since I watched the Shield, but didn't they do something like this in one of the seasons?  I'm sure I remember an officer of the farm getting injured/killed and the strike team basically going all out to kill the perp before he could be brought to justice.  And causing plenty of collateral damage along the way.

Perhaps the LAPD just wanted to prove that Vic Mackey is nothing compared to them.

I read somewhere this morning that they're not certain the axle was already broken. It may have been broken in the process of being towed.
