The absurdity has gotten to the point that I will suggest that not only should the folks falsely targeted should get paid but the officers involved should have to pay a deductible for the damages.  That deductible should be their pension funds.  Use that money before using taxpayer money.  It would help a lot of cities fix their budgets if the officers all around this country who caused their city to be sued for dumb garbage like this had to lose their pensions to pay for the damage they caused.  I really don't care if they only have a few dollars to retire on because they shot some 70 year old woman for looking like a man, years before.

Also, it should be a minimum 20 year sentence for any officer who discharges their weapon without visual confirmation of an armed attacker.

You really want policing to become one of those more dangerous jobs, like taxi driver, or construction worker. Then police might have to earn that hero status among parts of the demographic in the US that reads newspapers and watches local new.

It was his, dollars to doughnuts it was a diversion.  Found his ID and badge on a bus heading to an airport (land), found a hostage in a boat with a fouled propeller (sea), and found his burn out truck in the mountains (land).  He's forcing them to spread out their search.

The axle on his truck was broken suggesting leaving it there wasn't part of the plan.

Also possible, if he's found in the woods we'll know for sure.

I have a better idea: how about we just take away their farking guns, period?  Give the stupid thugs nothing more that a billy club and they might have to *gasp* try to actually think their way through a situation instead of defaulting to opening fire.

I read somewhere this morning that they're not certain the axle was already broken. It may have been broken in the process of being towed.

DontMakeMeComeBackThere: FormlessOne: Dorner's manifesto, as disturbing as it was, does make some sense. What in the hell is going on with the LAPD? "Hey, it's two chicks in a pick-up truck - Dorner's dressed like two chicks! Shoot 'em!" "Hey, it's a skinny white guy in a pick-up truck - Dorner's dressed like a skinny surfer! Shoot 'em!"

Perhaps someone should be less worried about Dorner and more worried about what's going on in the LAPD. It's almost as if the LAPD wants to ensure Dorner never makes it to trial.

Of course he's never going to make it to trial.  He's a highly trained (police and military) killer with nothing to loose amd a stated goal of killing lots of people... and he's had a complete mental break.  He will be shot on sight, because he has to be.

Only way he could avoid that would be to walk into some place and surrender by lying on the ground.

Since nothing is too crazy here...

I wonder if part of his plan is to die a martyr.  Being murdered by the LAPD on tape as he is peacefully surrendering might just clear his name (in the eye of the public) and actually bring about some reform Rodney King style.

If you're really paying attention, listening to the scanner (before they killed the Big Bear feed due to all the open mics allowing us to listen in on the TAC channels lol), ect.  The lessons learned from this are not about the shooting, but about his ability to evade the authorities.

2013-02-10 03:49:37 PM
I don't know if Dorner is guilty or if there is a one-legged man running around. Assuming Dorner is guilty, he is a murderer on people that didn't appear to directly wrong him and that is a bad thing.

He does have a sense of humor and I like what he is showing of his personality, other then possibly being a farking cold-blooded murder.

If I had to choose a side, police running around shooting random Japanese pickup drivers and shooting at them, not being able to hit the broadside of a barn while on a manhunt hit job, I guess Dorner is more likeable in PR sense.

What is impressive is Dorner almost seemed to know that after his little manifesto, that the LAPD (and other areas) would f**king loose it and become their own worst enemy.

Not really...sadly.  They still have time to talk about just about everything BUT this situation.

Just an example, the San Diego anti-Union Tribune Has the following top stories on their page (in order):
- Love letters from History's front lines
- Panel clears Chargers doctor
- Aztecs blow out Fresno State
- Padres fan-fest
- Chinese new year
- Some Bruce Springsteen story
- Gun Control, pro, con, and in the middle
- Beach Boys pushing historic designation for a surf spot
- New England digs out

Then you scroll down to the 7th lowest story on the page after those, and you see a Dorner story...

2013-02-10 03:50:07 PM

Farktastic: I don't condone any of the violence brought up in this whole issue, but after reading his manifesto, you have to hope that this brings about a huge amount of culture change in the LAPD and police departments in general.  If not to eliminate senior officers' entitlements and lack of oversight, at least in how they deal with the public.  The utter callousness he mentions about "body pictures" and deaths from crime meaning nothing but overtime to officers should incite rage in the public.

If his manifesto is to be believed, every citizen should be pushing for change.  Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if after this someone could win the mayor's job solely on an LAPD reform platform.

Of course in the real world, any organization (not just police) dealing with a formerly internal problem that has spilled out to the real world would probably just close ranks and bring organizational xenophobia to batshiat crazy levels, much like the LAPD has done.

Remember the Rampart scandal in the late 90's?  The fallout from that supposedly helped clean up the LAPD.  Maybe they've gone back to their old ways.  Im not sure who to believe here,  Why do many farkers automatically believe this guys manifesto?  Regardless, if this guy is putting hits out on LAPD and/or their families then fark him.  There are other ways to go about whistle blowing and unlawful termination without getting all shooty.

Likewise if the LAPD and in this case the Torrance PD are running around shooting up trucks without IDing the drivers, then those cops need to go on trial and let a jury sort it out.

In fact, they are proving every hour that they are way beyond anything he can claim.

Look, I hate to be "that guy" who admits there might be teeniest possibility of a 1% justification for police brutality, but.

Based on the guy's looks and the fact that he's a surfer and that he drives a blue pick-up, I'm not so sure this guy wasn't stupid enough to get it into his head to play a little "joke" on the police after being stopped and questioned.  "So they're having manhunt.  Wouldn't it be funny if I made a beeline for the next police car I saw as if I was a suicide bomber?  Then I'd turn away at the last minute.  We'd all get a kick out of that."

This is probably not what happened.  I have no reason to believe that's what happened.  All I'm saying is, if that was what happened, it wouldn't surprise me.

Krieghund: Despite subby's headline, this wasn't LAPD. It was the Torrance Police Department.

And it's old news.

I came here hoping there was a lead on a vehicle Dorner is using. I haven't heard anything about vehicles missing from the Big Bear area, which leads me to suspect he's still up there.

My guess is he's either dead from hypothermia or a self inflicted bullet to the head, but they won't find the body till spring. And that may very well have been his intention.

With what you know regarding this case, what leads you to believe that this man would be unaware of the weather conditions in and around the San Berbard mountain area that he would drive all the way up there, torch his truck, apparently the same truck the police are still shooting at whenever they see it, and then trek off into the forest to freeze to death? Doesn't really fit what we know the facts to be, does it?
And if he burned his truck on Friday why were cops shooting and ramming the same type of truck he had on Saturday?

2013-02-10 03:54:47 PM

PacificaFitz: steadyb: Didn't the cop on the run burn his truck? The cops have zero idea what he may be driving now. How can these other cop on pickup truck shootings be happening?

this all happened before they found the burnt out truck

Well, then people driving Nisan Titanish trucks should be OK now.

Well you know the FBI isn't going to do anything after seeing that kid who got his face turned into hamburger and an $800,000 check for his trouble. They wouldn't go for abuse of authority let alone attempted murder.

I say fourth time lucky and the next civilian they open up on is going to die.

Is anyone else reminded of an action movie? You know, the one where an honest cop gets on the wrong side of his corrupt colleagues, gets framed for a crime and then has to fight to evade his former colleagues who wish to kill him and hunt for the evidence to prove his innocence at the same time? Why have the cops been so happy to use violence to bring him down, hurting innocents while doing so?

Like what?  File a report?  A complaint?  Do you really think, with the rampant police corruption in this country, that such a thing would have any effect at all?  The police have shown that they are good at one thing and one thing only: protecting their own.  They don't give a damn about you or anyone else who isn't carrying a badge.  But go ahead, blow that whistle.  If you stick around long enough you might even get to see one of them carrying the paperwork off to the bathroom so they can wipe their ass with it before flushing it down the drain.

I'd say they're jumpy as hell, knowing a guy with that kind of arsenal and nothing to lose wants them all dead.  I don't necessarily blame them for being jumpy...especially since they were staked out at the home of one of his listed targets.

LA Mayor just offered up a $1 million reward for info that leads to his arrest...said the money was offered up by businesses, unions, etc.

2013-02-10 04:06:10 PM
This is just insane.  I have no hate for the police and I'm certain there are plenty of good officers but there is just no way to justify this.  It sends the message that if you are driving a truck similar to what Dorner had and a police officer spots you, you will probably be shot at.

It's been a while since I watched the Shield, but didn't they do something like this in one of the seasons?  I'm sure I remember an officer of the farm getting injured/killed and the strike team basically going all out to kill the perp before he could be brought to justice.  And causing plenty of collateral damage along the way.

Perhaps the LAPD just wanted to prove that Vic Mackey is nothing compared to them.

2013-02-10 04:07:16 PM
I'm certainly not a cop hater as much as the Liberals...but this entire ongoing issue here just brings up the classic Chris Rock line when I think about what Dorner is doing:

They're reducing the search in Big Bear, adding additional men to the security details on the named targets, and soon to be offering a reward for information leading to his capture/kill.  In other words... they have no farking clue where he is.

So much this. This is exactly what I thought when I saw they found the burned truck. Dorner isn't some stupid meth-head running from the police, he's smart and he's thought this out, he didn't just snap and go on a rampage. He drove to Big Bear, burned his truck, then walked a mile to his other vehicle. He's been out of there for days.

2013-02-10 04:07:46 PM
If Dormer is up to what they say he's up to, he's not going to run out of the country or commit suicide. That would be pointless. Mostly because he's not made a good point yet. Cages of police forces everywhere need to be rattled, but I doubt this will be the trigger.

Yeah; a "special state of consciousness" usually only attained by minorities and poors that find themselves targeted by corrupt police.
