The study, however, could not separate tobacco smokers from marijuana smokers, because all but one of those testing positive for marijuana in the urine also showed signs of nicotine. Still, Barber said to Everyday Health "We know cannabis can cause changes in blood pressure and heart rate that are associated with increased stroke risk. Importantly, it can also cause heart palpitations, [a sign of atrial fibrillation]. And atrial fibrillation is very strongly associated with stroke."

but you don't know that, because you weren't able to screen out anyone who also was a tobacco smoker/user.  that destroys your entire study.

Study shows tobacco smoking pot smokers are more likely to agree to urine tests.

In the end, it will be found that MJ has absolutely zero effect on a person's risk of a stroke and that many dollars were wasted trying to support a political stance.  If that will be publicized is anybody's guess.

The only reason there are this many people trying to rationalize it, is because it is still farking illegal, and mindless asshats still believe it is dangerous due to what their parents saw when watching Reefer Madness.

the few valid unbiased studies that did manage to get done all come to the same conclusion - cannabis is (relatively speaking) rather harmless.  certainly less so than liquor and tobacco.  it even has agricultural and medical uses, as well as recreational ones.  is it completely harmless?  well I don't think anything in this world is ever completely harmless....drink enough water and it'll kill you after all.  as far as practical concerns, cannabis is about as harmless as yer gonna get.  But even if you don't want to believe that, then you still have to believe this - cannabis doesn't fit the requirements to be a Schedule I substance.  even the DEA admits this fact....they just tell you to STFU and stop asking about it 'cause they're not gonna change.

But the could legitimately compare smokers of cigarettes with smokers of cigarettes and marijuana. If the latter group has better health, that might suggest that marijuana produces some beneficial effects that counters the negative effects of nicotine, or the combination of nicotine and THC is not as bad a nicotine itself.

I do know some people who smoke weed but not cigarettes. Not many. (Well, I don't know many people who smoke weed, nor many people who smoke in general.)

Hippies would prefer you smoke it because you use literally twice the amount you would need with a vaporizer.  The vaporizer would pay for itself, but it would require you to get out of your haze and stop buying weed for a while to do it.  Since it's not addictive, what's your excuse?

I wouldn't at all say that a vaporizer cuts your weed consumption in half.  On top of it, I still consider vaporizing smoking.  Just because you don't put an open flame to it, doesn't mean you aren't burning it.

I don't need to rationalize it. I often smoke it for recreational purposes. Far more often than I use it medicinally.

Nonetheless, I started as a medicinal user, for pain relief from a severe injury that plagues me to this day.

Acting like everyone who has a reason other than "for fun" is just rationalizing it is absurdly naive.

Actual data supports that evidence, as well. As a consequence of increased blood flow, and dilation of the blood vessels, smoking weed actually makes your lungs function more efficiently.

I smoke cause it's fun and a nice stress reliever,my fiance smokes for the same reason BUT it does relieve the pressure on his eyes from glaucoma and his numerous back problems. Since he's an epileptic his seizure meds interact poorly with pain meds,no relief and he just pukes all night til he seizures out if he takes opioids. Pot on the other hand give him relief and relaxation.

520 degrees is when it starts burning, releasing known carcinogens from smoke.  Vaporization temperatures are far less than that.  No flame = no combustion = no smoke.  It is not smoking, it's vaporizing.  Marijuana smoke has known carcinogens, just like cigarettes.  Marijuana vapor does not.

I'd say it cuts is by more than half, tbh. And if you go even more potent/efficient, the scale gets absurd. I bought a gram of wax for $30 damn near six months ago, and I've probably got another two weeks of it left with use ~3 times a week. The case of Fat Tire I bought last weekend was gone in three days.

And though I'm not 100% positive, I think by definition vaporizing means you aren't burning it.

Its only really twice the ammount if you're an idiot in the first place. Rolling joints wastes alot of weed compared to say a properly packed gravity bong. That and every vape I have tried has fallen flat compared to the high I get off a good bong or pipe rip, and I dont need to be plugged into a wall. (yes I know there are portable vapes, I own one, they are meh) and yes I have even vsped from the Volcano, its still just "ok" compared to smoking the stuff.

The Angry Hand of God: Just because you don't put an open flame to it, doesn't mean you aren't burning it.

On the contrary; that's *exactly* what it means.  "Burning" implies some kind of combustion / oxidation.  In the case of pot, the burning plant-matter provides heat that vaporizes some of the active THC (while destroying the rest of it in the process).

If you're simply heating a chemical until it vaporizes without combustion, that is not "burning" -- unless you also consider boiling water into steam to be "burning" the water.  ...because the principle is the same.

Yeah, the constricting of blood vessels, lack of oxygen and endless coughing really adds to the high.

You can also take the vaporized weed and extract the remaining thc in butter instead of turning it into ash and soot, and if you use a hose with a vaporizer, it collects a nice golden brown layer of pure honey-like resin that doesn't taste like ass that you can extract.  Sorry, I did the bong/pipe culture, it took a little getting used to but I'd never look back.  What would fill up a bowl for 3-4 hits becomes 20-30.  I cut my consumption in half and argue that I get even more ripped.
Also, you should be plugged into a wall.  Do it indoors.  Cuts down your chances of getting in legal trouble exponentially.

2013-02-10 05:04:29 PM
I don't know how things are today, but, 25-ish years ago, when I was in college and knew a fair number of pot smokers, it was very rare to find someone who smoked weed but not tobacco.  I would suspect that with the decline in tobacco smoking, especially among those with at least a college education, it's more common to find people who smoke weed but not tobacco these days, but that's only a guess.

Didn't read the article, but if subby is interpreting it correctly, it seems to me that this study shows that people who smoke weed are very likely to use tobacco, too.  Which seems accurate to me based purely on my own experience.
