but how ''Johnny B. Goode'' (which came out during the first year the Grammys were handed out) didn't sweep that first show is anybody's guess.

He obviously took himself out of the running because he felt guilty about getting the song during a phone call from his cousin about some white boy performing it.

And Guns n Roses should have gotten a Grammy for something. Appetite was one of the best rock albums of all time and half of Use Your Illusion 1&2 were pretty good too.

I was going to play video games.  Is this supposed to be interesting because if it is going to be a huge scandal then I want to watch at least 1 minute of it.

2013-02-10 01:55:57 PM
Johnny B. Goode didn't sweep the show because the Grammy Awards are notoriously conservative and aren't really about trying to reward the best music, just what's the best without rocking the boat. And yes part of that conservatism has been hints of racism at times. And it's not that the musicians, song writers etc are that way, it's the people who actually make the awards happen that are.

Will who usurp what from whom?  The what code, you say?.  NO!

I'd also add that moneymaking acts are more the types of acts they want to push.  I mean, some years, there are acts that are so obviously going to sweep it that they could be named "Hitler Anal Raped Zero Mostel" and still win it all.

The Grammys might be the best Twitter night of the year. Musicians taking themselves too seriously is comedy fodder.

Between Walking Dead, BSG and Bob's Burgers I think I'm gonna pass on the Grammys.

Only thing in the Grammys I give a damn about was The Robert Glasper Experiment and since they won Best R&B Album already it's The Walking Dead.

I like Mumford and Sons but Frank Ocean deserves to win everything this year. I don't even really like his genre (R&B makes me feel cranky for some reason), but Channel Orange was a great album.

That Frank Ocean album was extremely mediocre.  I think people are more in love with it's back story more than the music itself.

I like Mumford and Sons.  I always laugh really hard when he grabs his chest and says "This is the big one Elizabeth...I'm coming honey!"

Mugato: And Guns n Roses should have gotten a Grammy for something

They didn't start winning awards and accolades for Appetite until two years after the album was released. Because unlike the Oscars/Emmys/Golden Globes, the Grammies, Brits, AMW, MTVA and PCA don't recognize when music is released, they always recognize when it gets popular. Appetite for Destruction actually sat on the shelves for 10 months collecting dust until MTV discovered Sweet Child o' Mine and began caning it incessantly.... AND THEN the album shot to another one. AND THEN sports arenas wore out Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City incessantly. AND THEN the brass start noticing.

So you have Slash and Izzy absolutely shiatfaced winning awards in 1990 for an Album they released in 1987.

The music industry is farked and has always been farked, and it's never been truly representative of what the people actually like and listen to (I suppose you could say that about all awards shows, but at least the Oscars tries to have some integrity). It's been farked ever since the very first year when Alvin & The Chipmunks won three awards.

That's right. The 1950s equivalent of the farking jingle cats took home the most Grammies in its inaugural year.

The Mumfords, along with the Magnetic Zeros and the Old Crows already won "long-form music video" Grammy for Big Easy Express, which is a great documentary and the show was even better live.

BSG: Blood and Chrome is on tonight too. It's good.

2013-02-10 07:43:33 PM
There are 81 categories for the Grammys. How many awards will be given out during the broadcast? Eleven. Looking at who's performing, picking the winners is probably too easy. And this has three hours of airtime? That's a hell of a commercial for music that most people, if they want it, have already bought or downloaded otherwise.

A friend dragged me to one of their concerts last summer. I looked up a few of their tracks on youtube before going and wasn't all that impressed. As you said ... too generic.

But the concert was amazing. The guitarist knows how to get a very, very satisfying crunch out of his equipment. So yeah, so-so, generic tunes + really good manipulation of tone = much better than so-so outcome.

Given the current state of mainstream "rock" music, I don't begrudge them a few accolades at all.

I think Pokey LaFarge's critique of them was spot-on.

"For us folkies, and maybe this arrogant, but I think a lot of people are rubbed the wrong way by bands like Mumford and Sons," LaFarge says. "I think they're people who are somewhat exploiting certain forms of music rather than honing it in and evolving from it. I think it's more like dipping in the well and snatching and grabbing."

Maybe it's because of their look, but other than that I don't get why everyone calls them hipster. I always figured hipsters making music would end up sounding like punk, only less energetic, like they were trying to be rock, only ironically. M+S just seem to do bland wannabe folk music, but they're actually serious about it. Dunno if that makes sense or not but whatever.

I think the volume thing is with the 5.1 mix. If you are listening in plain stereo, the center channel (usually the vocals) loses some oomph.

I thought that's what Bad Religion was about, that's the song where he sings about how, "I could never make him love me." Is Forrest Gump also about unrequited love? I assumed he picked Forrest Gump to sing because it mentions fingers lots and he wanted to needle Chris Brown over the whole cut finger thing from their fight.

Wayne 985: rynthetyn: worlddan: If either Mumford and Sons or the Lumineers win anything I'll declare music dead.

/Must be the only TCW fan who despises both groups.

I like Mumford and Sons but Frank Ocean deserves to win everything this year. I don't even really like his genre (R&B makes me feel cranky for some reason), but Channel Orange was a great album.

Ditto. I just bought it today and it's amazing.

Judging by his performance and song at the Grammys, he doesn't deserve a record deal. It wasn't just bad, it was embarrassing. I caught him on Saturday Night Live awhile back too and had the thought, "You know when you see really old reruns of SNL and the musical guest makes you go, 'Well we know why we never heard from them again', this is just like that."

His public performances are hit and miss, but his album is brilliant.  It probably didn't help matters that he was doing a song where he was trying to play piano and his finger is still busted up from getting into the fight with Chris Brown.

Really though, listen to the album, there's a reason why it's on top of everybody's best-of lists for 2012.

it's called producers and studio musicians. They can clean up anyone these days.

Didn't see the Grammys. Just watched his performance on SNL via YouTube and thought his performance was spot-on great.

He's kind of understated as a performer. He seems like he'd fit in better at some small, smoke filled jazz club than a big stage show.

Thanks for all your pics tonight, Really made the thread.

This thread without at least one pic of KP's epic side boobage would have been useless.

A blessing upon you and your house.

/Also glad MCA got some props tonight.

I'm hoping Mumford & Son's Best Album win will place them squarely in the Toto's "IV" category of musical relevance.

Okay. Saw Frank Ocean perform "Forrest Gump" at the Grammys. It's an odd song, but enjoyable and the performance was again good. I don't know what browntimmy was talking about.

Are you sure you weren't distracted by the pretty screen? It was dull, off-key, and I can't understand why the hell someone would write a dramatic song about Forrest Gump and expect to be taken seriously.

The song isn't about Forrest Gump, it's written from the perspective of Jenny falling in love with Forrest and it's really about first love. Or more precisely, it's about Frank's own first love, using Forrest and Jenny to tell the story. Forrest represents the guy Frank fell in love with and Frank is Jenny.
