but how ''Johnny B. Goode'' (which came out during the first year the Grammys were handed out) didn't sweep that first show is anybody's guess.

He obviously took himself out of the running because he felt guilty about getting the song during a phone call from his cousin about some white boy performing it.

And Guns n Roses should have gotten a Grammy for something. Appetite was one of the best rock albums of all time and half of Use Your Illusion 1&2 were pretty good too.

I was going to play video games.  Is this supposed to be interesting because if it is going to be a huge scandal then I want to watch at least 1 minute of it.

Johnny B. Goode didn't sweep the show because the Grammy Awards are notoriously conservative and aren't really about trying to reward the best music, just what's the best without rocking the boat. And yes part of that conservatism has been hints of racism at times. And it's not that the musicians, song writers etc are that way, it's the people who actually make the awards happen that are.

Will who usurp what from whom?  The what code, you say?.  NO!

The no side boob memo was a deal breaker. I'm watching the Walking Dead.

I'd also add that moneymaking acts are more the types of acts they want to push.  I mean, some years, there are acts that are so obviously going to sweep it that they could be named "Hitler Anal Raped Zero Mostel" and still win it all.

The Grammys might be the best Twitter night of the year. Musicians taking themselves too seriously is comedy fodder.

I'm rewatching Lost on Netflix. So....yeah.

Between Walking Dead, BSG and Bob's Burgers I think I'm gonna pass on the Grammys.

Only thing in the Grammys I give a damn about was The Robert Glasper Experiment and since they won Best R&B Album already it's The Walking Dead.

If either Mumford and Sons or the Lumineers win anything I'll declare music dead.

/Must be the only TCW fan who despises both groups.

I like Mumford and Sons but Frank Ocean deserves to win everything this year. I don't even really like his genre (R&B makes me feel cranky for some reason), but Channel Orange was a great album.

Somebody let me know when the Black Keys perform.

I'll be watching Once Upon a Time and then The Walking Dead.  I'll catch any of the scandalous Grammy stuff on Fark later.

That Frank Ocean album was extremely mediocre.  I think people are more in love with it's back story more than the music itself.

I like Mumford and Sons.  I always laugh really hard when he grabs his chest and says "This is the big one Elizabeth...I'm coming honey!"

Funny band. Brilliant live, boring as hell on a record.

Mugato: And Guns n Roses should have gotten a Grammy for something

They didn't start winning awards and accolades for Appetite until two years after the album was released. Because unlike the Oscars/Emmys/Golden Globes, the Grammies, Brits, AMW, MTVA and PCA don't recognize when music is released, they always recognize when it gets popular. Appetite for Destruction actually sat on the shelves for 10 months collecting dust until MTV discovered Sweet Child o' Mine and began caning it incessantly.... AND THEN the album shot to another one. AND THEN sports arenas wore out Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City incessantly. AND THEN the brass start noticing.

So you have Slash and Izzy absolutely shiatfaced winning awards in 1990 for an Album they released in 1987.

The music industry is farked and has always been farked, and it's never been truly representative of what the people actually like and listen to (I suppose you could say that about all awards shows, but at least the Oscars tries to have some integrity). It's been farked ever since the very first year when Alvin & The Chipmunks won three awards.

That's right. The 1950s equivalent of the farking jingle cats took home the most Grammies in its inaugural year.

They're just...toogeneric sometimes.  Not that they're bad per se, just...generic.

When Once Upon A Time came out I thought it would be silly, but I recently watched the first three episodes and now I'm hooked.

The Mumfords, along with the Magnetic Zeros and the Old Crows already won "long-form music video" Grammy for Big Easy Express, which is a great documentary and the show was even better live.

BSG: Blood and Chrome is on tonight too. It's good.

There are 81 categories for the Grammys. How many awards will be given out during the broadcast? Eleven. Looking at who's performing, picking the winners is probably too easy. And this has three hours of airtime? That's a hell of a commercial for music that most people, if they want it, have already bought or downloaded otherwise.

A friend dragged me to one of their concerts last summer. I looked up a few of their tracks on youtube before going and wasn't all that impressed. As you said ... too generic.

But the concert was amazing. The guitarist knows how to get a very, very satisfying crunch out of his equipment. So yeah, so-so, generic tunes + really good manipulation of tone = much better than so-so outcome.

Given the current state of mainstream "rock" music, I don't begrudge them a few accolades at all.
