Just going by the previews I've seen, that was actually her goal.

FTFA:
(cacophonous, tractor-sized Melissa McCarthy).
Mr. Bateman and his female hippo
Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success

You may or may not like hyperbole but those comments are spot on, not as Ashley Burns in his screed describes them as misogynistic.

Much like Gov. Christie, the fat isn't the reason you suck

At least Mama Cass was attractive, McCarthy just does not have the looks to pull off the BBW thing.

This backlash is the best thing to happen to Rex Reed in years. For once people are paying attention to him.

I honestly thought he'd faded into oblivion years ago...didn't realize he was still writing his little "reviews."

I can tell you didn't see the movie. Melissa looked just fine at the end after the part in the movie where they got rid of the fright wig hair-do and trailer trash clothes. Entertaining movie actually, got dragged to it when my daughter's boyfriend couldn't take her and ended up enjoying the film. Good supporting performances by T.I, Genesis Rodgriquez (babe!) and veteran actor Robert Patrick as the bad guys as well.

Fat people need to face up to the reality that they're fat. She's fat and unfunny. There, I said it. Her whole schtick is being the obnoxious fat funny chick - why are people biatching? She's made a career out of being fat and loud. She's a one-note gimmick comedian who won't be remembered 10 years from now.

She is fat.  There is no denying it.

I wonder if he has made similar comments in reviewing the movies of, say, John Goodman, Dom DeLuise, Kevin James, James Coco, Kevin Smith, or Belushi.

/nah, I don't

I haven't read a Rex Reed review since I picked up a book of his collected reviews and saw he gave Airplane! one star partly because the plot went no where. I put the book back on the shelf and decided he wasn't worth the time.

The whole movie road trip thing involving two "odd couple" characters is just way too played out.

If she weighed 20 pounds less and had red hair, a lot of Farkers would be saying she's hot.

But what does being fat have to do with being funny/unfunny? It would be like if I were a sportswriter and started criticizing Derek Jeter for his hair.

2013-02-10 12:53:24 PM
Fat comedian plays on fatness for maximum gross-out joke pay-off, grosses out ornery fluff-piece film critic who refuses to admit he's a worn out gimmick.  This is somehow outrageous.

RminusQ: But what does being fat have to do with being funny/unfunny?

It depends on how skinny the people around her are and what physical punchline needs to happen.

There's plenty to criticize about her and her acting without going anywhere near the weight issue, but as soon as you mention that it's the only thing they'll remember.

I put Rex up there with Liberace....He was in every living room with his reviews and people,at the worst, are saying..."There's something wrong with that boy!!"

Character actors.  How do they work?

He also once authored a book titled Do You Sleep In The Nude?

Yeah, but so was Chris Farley.  He had no real sense of comedy except "fat people usually do not act this way, therefore funny".  But he is still fawned over by the people who grew up with him.  People actually compare him to Belushi, which is a great diservice - their only commonality was booze, drugs and bacon.

Why?  Because he was  your generation's alcoholic, coked up, hilarious fat guy that made silly movies?  Yeah, I'm seeing a theme here...

I've been a fan of Melissa McCarthy ever since "Gilmore Girls." I think she's funny, even though I'm not a big fan of "Mike and Molly." More power to her.

Rex Reed, on the other hand, isn't even a punchline anymore.

Comparing Farley to Belushi is similar to comparing Lindsay Lohan to Liz Taylor. Belushi owned. Farley doesn't even come close. Cargo-culting at its finest.

Del Close would disagree with you and his was the only opinion on this that would matter.

Reed's review? It was boilerplate. The only thing noteworthy about it was his bizarre preoccupation with McCarthy's weight, and his weird "poor Mr. Bateman" shtick. I love AD as much as the next person, but "Mr. Bateman" deserves no pity for the countless crap movies he has made since.

You are full of shiat. She spent years playing a very much non-obnoxious, non-loud character on Gilmore Girls (though she was very much fat). You may not like her or her movies or her television shows (Mike and Molly is crap), but she's not one-note.

Her gig on SNL was pretty good, as well.

I thought that this even gayer Tony Curtis had rimmed his last rectum back in the '80s. I thought he was not only dead, but throughly composted. And I can't take the opinions of the composted seriously, or indeed, at all.

It's like when I discover Carol Channing is still drawing breath. It's a temporal disconnect.

Abe Vigoda, on the other hand, is clearly an Eternal.

Meanwhile Kevin James continues to make crap films, unabated...

I haven't seen the movie and I turned bridemaids off 10 minutes in.  Mike and Molly in the hands of better writers would be a cute show.  I saw this chick on some talk show plugging this movie and to be honest she seems to be pretty level headed and down to earth.

I never liked Rex Reed as a critic and I also thought he was dead.  but this will help her and the movie more than hurt.

2013-02-10 03:42:36 PM
So she often plays fat characters... what's she supposed to do, play Auschwitz prisoners with anorexia?

2013-02-10 03:51:37 PM
I like McCarthy a lot - she cracks me up in her movies, and she's a very good interviewee.  I don't like Mike and Molly, but that's more because of the cookie-cutter laughtrack sitcom format.  She would have been perfect for the Artemis role in Always Sunny.  But funny is subjective and your mileage will, must, vary.  I REALLY don't like Ben Stiller or Jim Carrey, but I can get past other folks liking them.

Point, set, and match (although, to be fair, he did openly state the film was a debacle in every sense of the word when it came out and warned people away from it).  That being said, count me among those who are surprised Reed's still reviewing movies.  As for his insulting McCarthy for being fat, that's typical of him.  He's not even original in that regard since he pretty much stole the whole attack-actors-for-their-physical-appearance shtick from John Simon   If you want to talk about vitriol, Reed doesn't even come close to him.
