dickfreckle: When you go around showing your gun, someone smarter, faster and - most importantly - more sober than you is gonna whip your ass before giving you the chance to actually use it on him. Don't get stuck on stupid, people. I prefer you keep your guns at home, but if you are going to carry it, don't be a dumbass and threaten anyone who irritates you.

If by more sober you mean "hasn't smoked any meth lately" then I agree. Plus, this guy already has a record and isn't supposed to be carrying a gun.
Maybe he'll obey new gun laws, though. You never know...

BumpInTheNight: Alex Broughton Butt Chugger: mediablitz: NutWrench: It was later determined that he should not have had a gun because of his criminal past.

Criminals don't care about gun laws. Imagine that. I am shocked and dismayed.

Criminals in a country with extremely lax gun laws and easy access to guns, don't care about gun laws.

Criminals in India, with tough gun laws and little access to guns, make homemade guns without regard to laws or their own safety. Your point? People in China without access to guns who still want to hurt school kids do so with knives. Often. Since laws don't stop criminals, why would the availability or lack thereof of a certain weapon effect their behavior?

Okay okay, let's try something out:  Why is the world trying so hard to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of best Korea and iran?  Why bother?  If they really want to hurt their neighbors they already have the means to do it so fark it let's just sell them the goods and move on...

Oh wait...no, not all tools are equal when it comes to killing people.  Some are exceptionally easier to use when you want to cause a lot of damage.  Guns only exist to cause damage, they have no other purpose.  They are cigarettes and its about time you let go of the silly notion they are completely harmless and do not lend to the savage amounts of murders the US has compared to every other first world nation.

That's a great off topic point and all, but we're talking about how one individual harms another. Do you really think that in a gun free country people with violent tendencies would be less violent? Why?

But then, I didn't know Flea was a felon.

I have a sneaky feeling the whole gun-worshiping thing contributes a fair bit to the violent tendencies in the first place.

To stop a bad guy with a gun, you need a good guy with good tackling form.

The bigger question is why does Iran and NK want them? Because their neighbors have bigger guns than they do. That's the only thing to keep them from attacking now

Read the article again...."because of his criminal past, he had no right to be carrying a firearm".

Earguy:
I don't know what the local laws are there.  I don't know if the guy had a legal concealed-carry permit.  But this is what I expect to see with increasing frequency as more people carry.

Mine are normal-sized, but this is exactly what I would do.  You can't outrun a bullet.

Self-preservation is a powerful motive when two countries face off, especially at the nuclear level and that's great, but self-preservation really doesn't come into play that often with the crazies that snap.  In fact, ending up dead is usually the last bullet point on their to-do list.  Same with domestic violence, self-preservation isn't really a factor, its all about hurt the other person/people and do it with the most available/useful tool.  In both situations guns allow the aggressor to do quite a bit more damage more rapidly then practically any other tool*.

*Unibomber level crazy is an exception

OK.  But I stand by my point that there is a sliver of carry-permit holders who kind of hope something will happen.

I know, right?  It's like giving people access to free birth control; they're more tempted to use it.

I doubt it. I know plenty of violent people who don't own guns, and several avid gun collectors that don't carry. I know plenty of people who collect knives and swords who don't stab anyone. To a killer, a weapon is a disposable tool. They use it and lose it. Hardly what I would call worship.

We were talking about a society with violent tendencies and how it seems to have so sharply veered away from the rest of the first world societies on that front.  What's different between them you asked, and I responded that America's insistence and fascination with everybody's right to bear arms and how often its the hot topic of the week might be a big giant red flag as that's a very American thing.  The rest of the first world acknowledges the presence and value of guns but we don't go out of our way to boast about them or insist on them being everywhere.  I also do want to reveal a reason I picked the word murder instead of violence earlier:  Guns are one of the most effective tools to automagically upgrade an injury to a lethal wound.  The levels of violence aren't quite as skewed as the level of murders between America and the rest of the first world and once again the deeply embedded gun culture is the prime suspect.

Making guns illegal or some other extreme measure like that is just silly, but they weren't glorified anymore and the same tactics as say cigarettes were applied against them I think you'd see a similar result:  Less guns and way less murder in America.

Earguy: A verbal spat outside a Westminster Walmart on Friday took an alarming turn when a man showed a holstered gun.

I don't know what the local laws are there.  I don't know if the guy had a legal concealed-carry permit.  But this is what I expect to see with increasing frequency as more people carry.

I feel like there's a minority, but significant fraction, of people just hoping somebody starts something with them.  "Can't wait to see the look on their face when they see...this."  And a fraction of those will live their lives with a little more aggression, a little more swagger, not quite looking for trouble, but not quite being cool and level-headed, either.

And the other guy says, "Oh, yeah? Well, mine's bigger!" And sweeps aside his own duster. And all the other shoppers start ducking for cover. Welcome to America.

And how likely do you really think it is that he would go away for being in violation of present gun laws? As opposed to be slapped with a $100 fine and immediately replacing his confiscated gun with a new one? Most judges wouldn't dare to actually imprison him. It's like fifth-offense DUI.

Good news is that he can walk on to the cast of The Walking Dead when he gets out of prison.

I think it's probably much more than a slither.

If I buy boxing gloves it's because I want to box.
If I buy a book it's because I want to read.
If I but a fishing pole it's because I want to fish.
If I buy a gun it's because I want to shoot.

There are people who are great big nancies who don't feel safe unless they're packing heat. And then there are those who have a chip on their shoulder and really hope one of those people gets in their face. Go ahead - make my day, etc.

You kinda nailed it. People will always be spoiling for a fight, but the person brandishing the gun has a cheap sense of self-worth. You don't fix that with a ban. And I'm telling you this as a libtard.

I'm sorry to be all ITG, but if some loser/redneck/standard Wal-Mart guy shows me a gun (a threat, in my book), he's down before he gets an opportunity to use it. Not dead, but down at least.
