Day_Old_Dutchie: chapman: namegoeshere: No they won't. Do you think any of the officers involved will pay a penny of their own money for this? Their legal costs and any settlements will be paid by the department, ie the taxpayers.

The first, practical change we can make to stop corruption is to make police officers and prosecutors personally liable for acts that are grossly negligent or worse.

It'll never happen. There are too many goddamn empty-headed sheep out their that think cops should be trusted 100% and they should never be held liable when they screw up because "they put their life on the line every day".

So do newspaper deliverywomen, apparently.

It's therapy, not punishment.  Those officers are traumatized every time they pull a trigger.

Also, punishment is supposed to come after a trial and conviction in a court of law, not just on Fark.

No that isn't true. I saw a documentary on teevee once where a guy, despite being shot at by multiple assailants, and being hit 3 times, was able to do a forward roll and come up to one knee in perfect shooting stance and kill all of the bad guys. Then afterwards he agreed with his partner that he was getting too old for that shiat.

It's in Christopher Dorner's "manifesto".  Maybe you should do a shred of research before acting like a jack ass.

He also said he didn't vote because Huntsman didn't win the Republican Primary.

So you're being either deliberately obtuse or you're incapable of finding the unedited manifesto, either way it doesn't do much to suggest you're capable of logical thought.

He can like more than one person, he didn't vote for either because he "knew" neither could win.  He specifically praised Obama, so yes, he's an Obama fan.   You are the one not capable of logical thought.

It's funny (in a not-funny-actually-pretty-sick sort of way) that the second incident  occurred when officers freaked out at the cry of "shots fired" and shot the hell out of the random pickup that had to be passing because it might maybe be trying to kill them, when the only shots fired was the LAPD trying to kill two unarmed and not dangerous women who were not committing any sort of crime.  And then they call it a justified shooting:

In a statement to The Times, the department said: "The circumstances of the incident known to the responding officers would have led a reasonable officer under normal circumstances - and these were far from normal circumstances - to believe that fellow officers were being shot at and that the vehicle traveling toward them posed a serious risk.
"In the split seconds available to them," the statement continued, "action was appropriate to intervene and stop the actions of the driver of that vehicle."

It's like Yakety Sax should be playing continuously wherever LAPD officers are present.

DS1970: If this isn't an argument for citizens arming themselves, I don't know what is.

In fact, the situation is a vindication of California's "may issue" concealed weapons permit system.

Were California not to deny the right to keep and bear arms in public to most citizens, a law-abiding armed citizen witnessing the police opening fire on a vehicle without warning may, justifiably, mistake the police officer for a mass shooter and, in an attempt to stop the shooting, use deadly force against the police officer. As such, California's current system may have actually saved police officer lives.

Bungles: I think one of the biggest difference with the USA and the rest of the Western world isn't the religiosity or the guns or political circus or the lack of social safety nets, but the nature of the police.

No-one in the UK or France or Australia or Germany or Canada or New Zealand would think twice about going up to a policeman and asking for directions or just a chat. The police in the US just seem to be wired and scary and angry.

It seems to have happened over a number of years... I know this is a bad example, and I'm sorry, but if you watch the first few seasons of COPS the police were normal sized men and women and they only used the violence that was necessary. If you watch COPS now it's a bunch of roided up freaks with arms and legs the size of hams tackling and spearing people ¼ - ½ their size.

Now to the topic at hand...what kind of truck are they getting?

The kind that comes with liability waiver? No personal responsibility from the LAPD.

Do you also find the entire story kind of odd?

A little.

I miss the LA when it was just car chases on tv everyday.

Ah, yes. The news chopper giving us the blow-by-blow of the chase from the air live from KABC-7 News' Eye in the Sky! . So important they'd interrupt regularly scheduled programming so you could watch it. Everyone knows Los Angelenos just LOVE to see car chases. Especially OJ's. Still kinda ticked they didn't just tap the back of the Bronco and spin it. I was watching something when they broke in with that stupid chase, dammit!

/Betting on how long the chase would last was a neighborhood sport of sorts.
//Might as well make the best of it and maybe a buck or two.

Why, in an area that biatches about traffic so much, is there an abundance of people thinking they could successfully drive away from the police?

FTFManifesto
Mr. President, I haven't agreed with all of your decisions but of course I haven't agreed with all of your predecessors decisions. I think you've done a hell of a job with what you have been dealt and how you have managed it. I shed a tear the night you were initially elected President in 2008. I never thought that day would occur. A black man elected president in the U.S. in my lifetime. I cracked a smiled when you were re-elected in 2012 because I really didn't think you were going to pull that one off.

Funny you left out this part:

Before you start with your argument that you believe I would vote for Obama because he has the same skin color as me,fark you. I didn't vote in this last election as my choice of candidate, John Huntsman, didn't win the primary candidacy for his party.

The LAPD is so generous (with taxpayer money), they should probably rename their organization to something more appropriate.

Like the "Ministry of Love."

Anyway, one of the loose ends in this sordid tale is that the LAPD still has Teresa "Chupacabra" Evans to deal with.  They can't find her retroactively guilty and fire her, because that would validate the actions of the crazy-man Dorners.  And they can't keep her around on patrol while she continues to kick people in the chest, crack skulls and flay the skin off of people.

So, really, the only two options for the LAPD at this point are to either kill her (like she's some kind of Asian newspaper thrower or something), or promote her.  She'll probably end up with a desk job with a fat pension where she can't sadistically torture citizens quite as frequently as she does these days.
