fusillade762: Not to diminish this brave woman's accomplishments, but weren't most of the best German pilots dead by 1942?

No. Eric Hartman (352 victories), Gunther Rall, Adolph Galland, lots of experten still around at that point. Their heaviest loses were from mid '43 onward.

And she was flying in the time when there was the greatest disparity between the performance of the Soviet aircraft and the German aircraft,  mostly MiG-1s and 3s and LAGG-3s and Yak-1s going against FW-190As and 109Fs and um...probably early Gs. Can't remember when the G-2 came out. Actually the Yak-9 which was at least a reasonable aircraft came out some time in late '42, maybe she got to fly that.

Always good to see an MIA found and properly put to rest with her comrades.

You mean the Russian Mother Theresa.

I think y'all mean she was the Russina Clara Barton.

Actually she was Russian Madonna:
1. She loved guns.
2. She hated Nazis,
3. The white lily flower may be translated from Russian as Madonna lily

DoomPaul: Great accomplishment. You were able to shoot down some planes from a country of 50 million which was overstretched, fighting on multiple fronts, vastly outnumbered by the enemy. But at least the Soviets were facing the bulk of the Werchmant unlike the Allies on Western Front that act like it was a great accomplishment defeating the Germans in France and the low countries.

it was quite an accompishment, the disparity in equipment and training are the major reasons why the following list is topped by about 120 german pilots (and 1 finn) with more kills than the "red baron" who earned the vast majority of their kills against the russians.

To overcome such great disadvantages and put on a great showing takes a lot of skill.

A Shambling Mound: She only flew Yak-1's.

A dozen victories flying Yak-1s against JG-52 and the like, yikes. She had to have been very good to simply stay alive that long, much less score victories.
