Any Alaskan farkers care to enlighten us about the back story? Is this a Bridge to Nowhere?

I drove past this place when we visited Whittier. The wife was creeped out. During the wet summer, this building looks like something out of a horror flick.

It's the Buckner Building (click for photos) - finished in 1953 as a support base for the Army.  Included condos for families, a port, and various other buildings meant to support up to 1600 families.  In 1964, it was damaged by an earthquake so they stopped using it.

They can't tear it down because it has so much asbestos in it that it poses a risk.  Additionally, since there's only one way into town (the Whittier Tunnel) all of the scrap would have to be hauled out through it, or taken out on ships, which would be crazy expensive.

So there it sits.

One minute-long intro? Artsy out-of-focus shots? Obscure music chosen to ironically contrast with the content? Almost 1/4 of the video is credits? Yep. It's Vimeo.

What's with a "life of the party" person like you doing here on Fark on a Saturday night?

So, they spent 6 days setting this up. Maybe I'm just lazy, but there's a lot more I'd rather spend 6 days doing besides moving and packing snow in a building.

Does your computer/device/gizmo not have a volume control or mute of some sort?

I don't do that much skiing, but I can't imagine it's good for your boots to be trekking for miles on asphalt in them.  It's not that hard to wear sneakers to the drop and then change.

i was excited, thinking he would ski down from the roof and fall 5 stories down.
Turned out pretty blah

Yeah.

I wanted to see him ski off the roof and land on his face...

They had to spend that time making sure we noticed the swagger before they actually got to the building. I doubt they walked more than a hundred metres.

/Skiing was pretty cool, even though I'm left wondering where the "fury" went.
