Heh! This thread couldn't have been greenlit at a better time. My son just ordered donuts from Dizzy Dean's.

A good plain cake donut is as the top of my personal list followed closely by crullers

The ones they sell at the grocery store as "Old Fashioned" are my favorite.
They're basically a dense cake donut with light sugar glaze and they're the first thing I picture any time anyone mentions donuts.
So I guess I'm with metalupis on this one.

Dunkin Donuts had a Heath Bar Crunch that was so sweet and rich that it was nearly inedible. It's was fantastic.

Metalupis: A good plain cake donut is as the top of my personal list followed closely by crullers

It's damned near impossible to find crullers in my locale. The place we order from doesn't have them and the one place that I know has them sells out within an hour. And they don't deliver.

Plain cake donuts were part of the order placed today, along with some maple bars, an apple fritter (for me) and assorted other donuts.

Donuts are a food group unto themselves

/classic chocolate glazed for me, please

Toss up between Boston cream and vanilla cream for me.

I prefer cherry fritters to apple although both are good. At the bottom of the list for me are jelly filled and krispy kreme.

Krispy Kreme plain.

Fark all you east-coast Dunkin' Donuts fatties!

2013-02-09 12:29:28 PM
Donuts are delicious, but I basically never eat them.  If I'm going to eat something terrible for me, I'd much rather it be something savory like pizza vs. sweet.  Having said that, now I want a donut.  And I like normal glaze followed by chocolate.

Sour cream and apple fritters and my favorites. Have been since i was a little kid. Which is too bad because I can't get a sour cream out west at all. I guess they are a midwest/east coast thing.

I have to drive 4 hours to get to the Krispy Kreme. The local high school (we're rural in case you didn't catch that) will do a Krispy Kreme Run as a fundraiser. The district provides the van, a driver, a chaperone, and a couple kids, and they go to the East Valley (Phoenix) Krispy Kreme at 3:00 in the morning. Then they come back and sell them for like $5. That $5 is so worth it and most of the money goes to the school.

You have to understand that we won a budget override this year to keep classes under 45 kids BY 5 FARKING VOTES. The votes were hand-counted at least 15 times. I'm not kidding. It adds $20 to the average property tax. FIVE VOTES. My entire career was inner-city schools, but now that I see the challenges that even rural schools face.  We're in real trouble if people don't want to pay some puny taxes.

(sorry to interject the politics in a donut thread)

Hi I'm sour cream. Have we met? You're "out west" and can't find sour cream, or am I just not detecting a brand or type you're looking for? I can go into any Safeway in Arizona and get sour cream. I can go to Southwest Market and get queso crema, queso menonita. (Oh, god, Menonite cheese from the north of Mexico stretches for miles. It's perfect for quesadillas.)

What kind of sour cream are you talking about? It must be an East Coast thing I'm not familiar with.

Toss-up.  Custard-filled Long Johns or Ludwyk's Sour Cream donuts with cinnamon sugar.

I think Tellingthem means apple fritters with sour cream in them.

As long as powdered is #1, I'm fine.

2013-02-09 01:37:59 PM
Our Safeway, here in Nowhere, Arizona makes apple fritters with sour cream. I didn't think they were so hard to find. Getting a Krispy Kreme is like manna from Heaven, though.

Yeah, I like looking like a coke addict all day. Powdered sucks, too.

Yo, jelly donut, Imma let you finish, but strawberry frosted is one of the best donuts of all time!

Cinnamon sugar --- but ONLY from Grand Marais, Mn.    I'll get an apple fritter most other places.

Dunkin Donuts powdered sugar covered donut with chocolate mousse filling.

/Dammit I'm out the door. Be right back.

Cake donuts are my preference, but I had one yesterday that was basically six or seven donut holes welded together in a sort of spear-shape.  Tasty.  Good for eating while walking

No donut has ever topped the custard-filled, chocolate-iced donut from Schuler's bakery in Springfield Ohio. I've lived all over the US, and have never found its equal. The Bakery Bank in Bloomington IL used to make a good one, but the cake was a bit off. Still yummy, but not quite right.

An aside: The fine folks at Schuler's will NOT let you leave without a receipt. Reminds me of a Mitch Hedburg joke.

Custard is the only acceptable filling.

Not raspberry jam
Not lemon goo
And in the name of all that's holy, not white icing masquerading as custard.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

When I was in Australia, this guy I knew was surprised when I said that I hadn't seen anyone carrying cases of Krispy Kremes on the flight over... He said a lot of Aussies in the US pick up some to take home. I later did see a few, as well as a Krispy Kreme location inside Melbourne Airport.

1. Chocolate-covered, crème-filled.
2. Everything else.

I've tried twice, without success, to recreate the plain cake doughnuts that my dear old auntie used to make out on the farm. My guess as to the reason I can't reproduce the tasty goodness of hers would be, she probably used real lard or some such for cooking them. The recipe I have is missing some details and I've had to improvise with online recipe sources. :(

i never met a donut i didn't like.

maybe 10 years ago i got this after 7:00PM half-price donut habit supported by an excellent supermarket bakery. i pushed my luck once too often and hit a bad batch, got sick. never bought discount donuts again.

i have a niece in college. when she's home i'll go visit to get to say Hi and i always bring dunkin donuts. she's thin as a rail but she loves those donuts so much she does a 'donut dance'. life is good.

1. Fritters (good ones. These are like McD's fries, either perfect and awesome or mediocre).
2. Any cake donut. Blueberry especcially.
3. Most of the rest.
4. Sour cream.

2013-02-09 08:52:18 PM
Oh and as an earlier person said, white icing shouldn't be a filling.

Crullers are top of my list with the Tiger Tail also high up there.

I used to work at Casey's General Store in high school. Casey's is a weird little Midwest convenience store chain that will also serve you made-to-order pizza, and makes fresh cake doughnuts every morning. Like, "they have a machine that squirts out a ring of dough into a trough of burning hot oil" fresh.

People always used to go bonkers for the blueberry cake ones, but there were two that stood out for me:

- Plain white cake, sprinkled with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. These got kind of nasty as they got old, but fresh? Like a unicorn jizzing in your mouth.
- Chocolate/white cake with chocolate frosting. This was a bit guerrilla as there was no official recipe that I remember, you just mixed some of the chocolate and white cake mix and blended them together when loading the hopper. Usually the chocolate batter made denser doughnuts, the white lighter, and when you mixed them what you got is a striped/patched doughnut that had slightly different textures when you ate it.
