That's kinda what I was wondering. Legally, how does this work? Especially for those that paid the application fee(s) before the school responded with, "Oops, our bad."

She responded to the Jan. 11 offer from UVU President Matthew Holland by paying a $35 application fee.

Isn't that fraud?  School should at least refund the application fees.

Schneider is now applying to nearby Brigham Young University in Provo but won't rule out UVU...

You should RTFA.  You'd know it's got a value of $4122/year.  Even if you win, it would probably be a push after paying the lawyer(s).  The chances of winning  and being awarded legal fees is pretty slim.

That doesn't sound like it's really a full ride.  I thought full rides included room / board / textbooks and all the rest of the miscellany.  I had that kind of full ride when I first started college, but young me was too dumb in the ways of the world and dropped out because I wanted to work.  I would still have rather worked than ever set foot back into a university, but alas.

oh darn, BYU now instead of UVU and Institute classes. what a shame.

To me, the biggest issue would be if in the meantime, i've told other schools that i decline their offers. Now I have no options.

So, it's not University of Utah, it's Utah Valley University...a former junior college/tech/ag school that went "university" after a squad of Mormon legislators elevated it to U. status so UVU could better serve all those Mo sheep from Provo (in Utah Valley) who couldn't fit into BYU, and were far too innocent and upstanding to attend that savage, gentile institution called U. of Utah, where they might get an actual education.

Not surprised, at all, that UVU was dumb enough to make this mistake.

Came here to mention this. UVU is panty waste. A full-ride scholarship wouldn't be worth the money you paid to go there. I'm actually surprised it can even maintain some sort of accreditation.

A friend of mine was in an M.A. program at a pretty crappy state school and was accidently sent a notice that she had been awarded a TA job. They sent a followup letter apolgizing for the clerical error, but she threatened to sue and they let her teach undergrads. She got the worst evaluations on record and wasn't rehired. The year after she graduated, the department was closed down.

During the semester I was on academic probation, I received a letter inviting me to the honors banquet. It sounded fishy, so I showed it to the dean's secretary and she said it should have gone to the guy after me, alphabetically. We had a good laugh about it. It sure didn't make national news.

The part that I really love is that there was no consideration for the poor undergrads that she was going to teach. That would have beat any lawsuit based on a clerical error. Just as well the department failed.

If one of these students sent in the 35 or whatever bucks for an application after they were told about the scholarship, they had a contract.

I don't remember entering that either.
But I'm sure that's legit.  The money should be deposited to my account in a few days, because I provided them with all my banking information...
