Maybe she did need firing for insubordination, but the next 2 levels up the chain of command need to be fired even more for incompetence.

$1500 for a backup generator and the County wouldn't have had to worry about looking like assfarks.

Been following this (sort of).

So far, I have to say...

There is too much internet drama involved in this for me to take any of it seriously..

I'm ruling in favor of everyone is wrong..

Case dismissed

Ironic that she could have insulated the pipes with animal skins. Just sayin'

Or just tie some fluffy cats round the pipes...

People testified the truth of her statements and they still fired her and denied the allegations? No, power doesn't corrupt in the slightest, ever.

Not to mention that someone who can average 3 or so adoptions a day for unwanted pets is probably a bit more effective in their job than an elected commissioner.

I love the part where the council said it doesn't have to consider what the public thinks. In other words: We know what we're doing is petty, shiatty, and unacceptable, so don't remind us.

Courtney should take one of those commissioners' seat, running on the Kittens & Puppies Platform.

Sooo..... was there a heating problem or not?

And what other issues were involved? Sounds like they're claiming this was only one of multiple problems they had with her.

jim32rr: So none of the animals have been shot ..... yet

They're commissioners, not SWAT or DEA. No need to be shooting people's animals or terrorizing their families when there isn't the possibility that some guy is getting stoned now and then in his own den after work.

You let people know we're incompetent  ducebads.
your fired.

2013-02-09 01:53:42 PM
As usual, not nearly enough info to make any decision, so we're left guessing again.

1. It's possible people saw their breath without the pipes being frozen and heat being unavailable.
2. It certainly sounds like the Facebook access dispute was at the heart of the problem
3. They didn't testify that any animals died as a result, so there probably wasn't any kind of problem to begin with. I'm sure we would have heard endlessly the count and breed of animal that died.

Lame article

Her firing was not asinine at all. The only thing asinine was her posting comments that could reflect negatively on her employer. If she had a problem with the facilities she should have raised it up the chain of command within the organization.

2013-02-09 01:58:14 PM
I figure she was maybe trying to solicit some pro-bono work by an animal lover in the plumbing profession to save money for the shelter.

Dear Preston County Commission:

Congrats, your sheer douchebaggery is national! Your incompetence and hatred for the puppies and kitties made Caturday!

Here's a page that tells you how to reach the commission, if you're so inclined: http://www.prestoncountywv.org/officials.php  Since it's the commission's publicly available elected officials page (and the first one that pops in a Google search), I don't think it breaks any Fark rules.

National embarrassment, or give an effective shelter manager who actually gives a shiat about the animals her job back? Should be a no-brainer, but it is West Virginia, so there's that.

Yeah, without reading her FB posts we don't know whether they were appropriate or not.  "Pipes busted, no heat... please donate" is fine. "My idiot bosses let things go to hell" is not.

Also, refusing to give bosses FB access is insubordination.

This isn't a case of "employer demands employee's Facebook password" because pages for businesses/organizations are created from a personal account but then can have other people added as co-equal admins. There's no good reason to refuse to give a superior access to a page representing the entity they have authority over.

2013-02-09 03:08:12 PM
sounds to me like a bunch of Douchebags were pissed they wee made to look bad as they did not get funds to repair the probelms at the shelter and could not get access to the Facebook page to remove the offending posts.

if i was part of that community i would organized people so no one took the job and protested until the director was rehired and apologized to.

Um, no. Generators on that scale cost an assload of money, and wiring them in costs another assload. Add on another assload for fuel and maintenance, and you're up to at least three assloads.

$1500 will get you a generator that will run about half of the stuff in your house, assuming you do not have electric heating.

Sincere thanks for this post. I'm often infuriated at finding myself unable to do little more than voice an opinion online or post some snark. I have found that communicating with people of position in a polite manner can often yield positive results.

grimlock1972:

And meanwhile, the animals at the shelter would suffer due to lack of leadership running the place. Adoptions would probably falter, current staff would be overworked and not be able to provide the very best care for the animals, the overworked staff might begin to make mistakes with meds, feeding, hygeine, health care that could very well cost animals their lives. Animals that would otherwise have been adopted quickly would either languish in a tiny cage with minimal enrichment (snorgles and toys), or if this is a kill shelter, they would be killed. All because you got up on your high horse before you unwadded your panties and thought for a damn minute.

I agree, on the information presented in the headline and what was in the article this woman was a phenomenal person who gave her heart and soul to save these poor animals. I admire that, and she is to be commended for her hard work and probably copious tears of frustration. However, she works for a bureaucracy and those have pretty cut and dried rules. If you don't do what your boss tells you to do, you get fired. Even if you're Saint Tapdancing Mother Theresa, you have to follow the rules.

I'm sorry this woman lost her job and I wish her all the best of luck in finding a new one that is more fulfilling and less frustrating than dealing with the bureaucracy. I think the people who fired her stuck too close to the letter of the law and overlooked her excellent job performance. But I don't think animals should suffer and possibly die for it.

tl,dr: Don't be a fool.

This was about the Facebook page. They demanded access the the SHELTER's Facebook page, to maintain direct control, and she refused.

Too bad, so sad. I agree with her dismissal.

Our local shelter finally caught onto the Facebook effectiveness when the page run by volunteers was doing so well. Then they realized they had no control. They created their own page, and asked the volunteers to shut down theirs. It was sad and a bit upsetting at first, but the replacement page has been a huge success and the shelter is not at the mercy of idiots like this woman.

No worries. I politely e-mailed them myself, with a little humor. So happens that when I lived with my grandfather, I lived just across the border from Preston County. Still have a whole lot of relatives in the area, so I might maybe have fired off a few e-mails that direction *whistles innocently*
