Umm you should probably keep watching that seventeen and a half minute long video.

Incidentally there's a multiplayer text game called HellMOO which is set in a post-apocalyptic world. It's extremely graphic and extremely NSFW. There's mutations that can be obtained, including game-changing mutations which radically alter gameplay such as Abomination and Hideous Freak.

If you're into text and imagination that is. You are nearly guaranteed to be literally raped and murdered within one hour of gameplay.

I loved 3rd person games in the early 2000's and preferred them to the 1st or 2nd person perspective.

I remember reading that the original inspired Fallout.  But I did not play any of those games until FO3, the FONV.  Now I see how much they really share, just a different game engine for the most part.
This looks like it is going to be a PC game so it will likely not be for me unless I find enough cash to build a system in the next year.  I would be very tempted to play it even though it is 3rd person and for PC.

Why PC only.  Those widgets need a mouse and that would be hard to use for a console.

I'm really looking forward to this.  The original is pretty much my favorite game of all time.  It looks like there are lots of nods to the original.  Bobby grew up to be a ranger hating zealot?  Awesome!  3d rendered Slicerdroid popping up at the end of the video?  Awesome!

The gameplay looks pretty modern, but with a lot of the old school touches, which is pretty cool.

//You see an old Apple ][e.  On the screen it says 'Wasteland 2'. You shudder in anticipation.

Releasing a game like this for the consoles would be akin to serving top shelf scotch at MacDonalds.  It would be ill-received by an audience that has no business even trying it.  Plus it would inevitably influence the development direction to accomodate for those platform's various short comings.  Like their user base. :P

These kinds of games are what drove many of us to "Computer gaming" rather than consoles. They simply didn't exist at one time. Oooooo Legend of Zelda. Gimme a break.

That sounds like begging the question. There's no market for it because that's not a typical "console game", and console games attract a particular market. Saying a game like this isn't "possible" on a console is based on flimsy and/or outdated arguments.

Name one RTS or even better TBS that's been successful on a console.  Just one :)  They get panned by reviewers in favour of their PC version and for example with X-com while the initial sales were about equal on both platforms its pretty telling that within a month the x-com for consoles got put on like 50-75% sales while Steam & the other PC distributors continue to sell it at the original listed price.

Sorry, I'm not into pokemon.

But seriously yes FFT is a good example of a TBS that thrived on the consoles, it came from a deep pedigree of TBS designers and landed during the height of the Final Fantasy brand which allowed it to get a bunch of people onboard who'd have just as likely bought a Final Fantasy themed racing game if such a thing was offered.  It was lucky.

That's the awesome thing about how this game is funded. They don't have to pander to generic mass market interests. People who are into top-down turn based RPGs can pay ahead of time (optionally contributing more than the cost of a single copy) and they can really make the game we want.

The new Fallout games were kind of ruined by the focus on not alienating mainstream console gamers IMO.

From what I saw... its gonna be hard for me to want to find time for this. It looks slow.. it will have almost no voice over work.. and if they do cut scenes it will prolly be pre rendered intermissions. Really when we see blizzard improving Starcraft as much as it did (and kept it low tech too), seeing something like this from  well respected IP is disappointing.

FFT and its ilk worked OK on console because it was grid-based and didn't need the precision of a mouse.  I can't speak for valkyria chronicles as I've never played it.

FFT was a good game, regardless of brand.  The brand surely did help, but wasn't a cause of the game being good.

FFT didn't need the branding, and for that matter neither did FF12 for that matter. They are both set in Ivalice, the world of Vagrant Story. I would love to see a sequel to THAT game.

Finally a thread where my fark name might actually get recognized.

I'm slightly dubious about the game, although thrilled to death that it got fansourced to fruition.  Just seems like Fallout has placed a gigantic footprint over what Wasteland was -- son overtaking the father, so to speak.  But if they manage to get the mix of desolation, humor, robots and realistic weirdness together, it could be a lot of fun.  Not sure I have time for a large-scale isometric turn-based game anymore, however.

You know, we used to spend all night and all morning in some games just gearing up and heading into a single area only to wipe out our team. And we'd start over and do it again the next night. I'm not convinced convenience and rapid pacing have necessarily improved gaming.

I'm not blaming the game, I'm blaming myself.  I'm in my late 30s, we have our first child on the way.  I don't really have the bandwidth to devote to games much anymore.

Huge Strategy + turn base gamer but making this kind of game turn base looks so boring.  Shooters should always be saved for real life. Warcraft/Starcraft mastered that. For turn-base, more strategy needs to apply for a game like this.

It was a good game, as was the Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle Tactics series.  But they are fewer and further between on consoles for sure.   Still, I can remember spending way too much time on the Sega Genesis version of King's Bounty.

More lucky franchises
But even so, we were never talking about if a console strategy game is SUCCESSFUL; rather, if it can be done well. Today, Japan almost entirely owns the realm of console strategy games. Franchises like the above, Disgaea, Nobunaga's Ambition, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and a slew of more obscure franchises are perfectly competent examples. So it isn't so much that console strategy games are dead in the water - so much as you were too quick to offer a challenge without actually having any knowledge on the subject.

Man, that is an overcomplicated interface and controls.  When I play a game, I don't want to need to go to night school to figure it out and get good with it.  Plus, the way that buildings and trees in the foreground block you from seeing what your character is doing.  This is 2013 people, this kind of shiat should not still be happening in video games.

Pretty graphics, though.  I can see that someone spent a lot of time and trouble trying to make still images of the game look good.

Let's try a home brew one:  Lighten up Francis.

You can argue about how well Japanese BTS games do in Japan all you want but at the end of the day its a bad idea to release an American one for the American audience, it won't do well and they'd be wasting a lot of time porting the engine to those platforms when they could just release it purely on the PC...which its fanbase already owns.
