Lurk sober post drunk: xria: Just in case anyone still has the mistaken impression that measles isn't a killer disease - 158,000 die a year from it still (mostly children, and mostly in low income countries without widespread vaccination) - given population growth the 2.6 million mostly children than died per year before widespread vaccinations started in the 1980s would now equate to more than 4 million children dying each year.

So campaigning against measles vaccination without knowing what you are talking about statistically makes you worse than Hitler - especially as at least his efforts weren't specifically targeting children for mass slaughter.

What's wrong with being artistic? If you ask me, we need more healthy artists out there, not the  wheezing fundy Christian tea partying-inhaler- huffing- pock-marked- leg braced posers who we're settling for these days. I say shoot up!

Seriously, I do put some of the blame on sites that lead people to believe that reading a few brief paragraphs, written by a questionable source, is a worthwhile substitute for a doctor's advice. Yes, there are quack docs and all that, but there are also a huge number of terrific ones. Yet, the clueless flock to listen to a 2 bit actress and playboy playmate with not even a portion of a degree in healthcare (she studied to be a nurse, but dropped out).

So yeah, I blame WebMD.....then again, sites like WebMD exist because stupid anti-vaccs demand to have a place that confirm their less then well thought out beliefs.

I once said that too much information can be a bad thing. This is a prime example of someone getting their hands on bad info and then spreading it around without doing further research. Especially since the Dr who wrote the report has been soundly discredited.

When the Polio vaccine came out, there were some folks who weren't going to let their kids be vaccinated so the government made it mandatory, especially if you wanted your kid to go to school. I guess the Civil Rights Lawyers got that stopped.

Then again, I recall when seatbelts were introduced -- and even though the public was heavily educated on what happened in a car wreck if you were unbelted, there were those who were firmly against them. The government had to make it a law to use them and some car makers designed 'automatic belts' to secure you in when you closed the car door.

My Mom was never vaccinated for Measles, since growing up, they did not have a vaccine. She was lucky enough to never catch the disease -- until she got pregnant with my little brother. Even with all of us older kids having them, she somehow escaped. She did make sure all of us kids got every vaccine as soon as they came out.

When my brother was born, he wound up with a malformed hand due to the Measles which, over the years, required surgery to get it to work right. By the time he was 19, we discovered he also had scoliosis -- a chronic bend in the spine, suspected to have been caused by the effects of the disease.

When in his 40's, he had to have surgery to correct it as much as they could since it kept getting worse. Basically, Dr.s opened him up from the nap of his neck to the top of his butt and installed what looks like a huge bicycle chain to stop the curve. (He actually gained an inch or so in height.)

All due to measles.

Now, they've found a link between Chicken Pox and shingles -- a nasty, painful intermittently occurring nerve disease which usually strikes a person over 40.

They also now have a vaccine for Chicken Pox that they didn't when I was a kid. I had the disease way back then, so I have the virus floating around in my system. I just hope it never activates.

I also recall when seeing bowlegged kids in school was not uncommon. Ricketts. Caused by not enough calcium and vitamin D. The leg bones were soft. The Government wiped that out by providing vitamin D enhanced milk cheaply for the schools.

Now, whole milk isn't even listed on the food pyramid and is advertised almost as if it is poison.

The herd mentality of people tends to irritate me.

lordjupiter: Name just about any medical symptom and in 5 minutes of searching you can probably find a link between it and least 50 different conditions (many serious), multiple cautionary tales of failed treatments and horrific side-effects, and then nearly as many testimonials stating the exact opposite.
