I read Susannah Cahalan's book, Brain on Fire.  It was frightening.  One minute you are yourself and the next minute you are acting crazy and then your brain and body just start shutting down on you.

I went to school with a kid who would hear someone knocking on a door or doorbells at random times. It got to the point where he couldn't tell if someone was really at the door or not.

Any disease that strikes "mainly" young women is 100% mental. Every couple of years something like this happens. Some of the women are being AW, but most of them are just extremely susceptible to suggestive hysteria.  It strikes them from puberty up to the age of 30 or so.

Pretty sure the parents misunderstood the words "inflammation of the brain" for "her brain is on fire". Not a new disease either. Have had a few alcoholic patients who end up with it.

DefinitionEncephalitis (en-sef-uh-LI-tis) is inflammation of the brain. Viral infections are the most common cause of the condition.
Encephalitis can cause flu-like symptoms, such as a fever or severe headache, as well as confused thinking, seizures, or problems with senses or movement. Many cases of encephalitis may go unnoticed because they result in only mild flu-like symptoms or even no symptoms. Severe cases of encephalitis, while relatively rare, can be life-threatening.

Wiki:

According to a review of 100 cases in The Lancet, 91 of the 100 patients were women, mean age of all patients numbered 23 years (5-76 range); of the 98 patients that underwent an oncological screening, 58 had a tumour, predominantly an ovarian teratoma. All patients presented with psychiatric symptoms or memory problems; 76 of them suffered from seizures, 88 developed unresponsiveness (decreased consciousness), 86 - dyskinesias, 69 - autonomic instability, and 66 - hypoventilation. Tumour treatment associated with better prognosis; 75 patients got well without residual problems and 25 died or were left with severe deficits.

You should RTFA. It turned out to be an auto-immune disease of the brain.

The immune system is very, very complex and thus is often not quite tuned just right. For instance, allergies are your immune system overreacting to something innocuous you're exposed to in your environment. Rheumatoid arthritis is the immune system responding to the lining of your joints as a threat and attacking it. There are auto-immune disorders where the immune system screws up and attacks... well, you name a type of tissue in the body and someone has an immune system which decides to reject it at some point. Some people's own immune system goes in to overdrive and stays there, being too sensitive it rejects some normal tissue and attacks it. That's just how intelligently designed our bodies are.

So this turned out to be the immune system borking up and attacking her own brain. Nothing even remotely implausible about that. Especially since once they got her on the right regime of drugs (probably a DMARD or perhaps one of the new biologics they have now) she got better. It sucks when you own body tries to kill you...

Oh yeah, I forgot one more thing... Some autoimmune diseases are more prevalent among women then men. Rheumatoid arthritis is something like 2 - 3 times more likely in women. So again, this being primarily in women is not inconsistent with other autoimmune diseases either.

There was mounting evidence that O'Neill had created more than he knew in that crude laboratory of
his. Now that people were once more moving about, crossing the old borders and the new ones,
diseases never before observed were beginning to crop up. O'Neill had probably been a walking factory
of infections. They could trace his path by where the new diseases were appearing.

A year or two ago there was this high school in Western NY where one girl said she felt ticky and twitchy. People started wondering if it was caused by an environmental toxin. Soon after the news got out, dozens of other girls had a psychosomatic response and fell into some kind of mass shared delusion that they had been exposed to a nerve agent. It was the weirdest farking thing. The news would interview these 15 year old girls and they would be jerking and twitching and stuttering like they couldn't control it. Then when environmental tests showed that there were no toxins in the soil or water anywhere near the school or town, everyone just went back to normal.

Bruce Lee died of something similar. I had viral encephalitis in my early 20s, healthy and in great shape. Virtually no trace of a virus though my body was over reacting to it. Given a spinal tap and put in sensory depravation for a week to let my body recover or die peacefully. Had the worst headache for two months later. No long term affects aside from being a Republican. J/K. In Canada we're called conservatives :p

I thought histrionic was the same as acting hysterical. NIH medline describes the diagnosable psychiatric condition:

Symptoms include:
+ Acting or looking overly seductive
+ Being easily influenced by other people
+ Being overly concerned with their looks
+ Being overly dramatic and emotional
+ Being overly sensitive to criticism or disapproval
+ Believing that relationships are more intimate than they actually are
+ Blaming failure or disappointment on others
+ Constantly seeking reassurance or approval
+ Having a low tolerance for frustration or delayed gratification
+ Needing to be the center of attention (self-centeredness)
+ Quickly changing emotions, which may seem shallow to others

Depends on the age, actually. Bipolar presents much differently in children and teens, in the sense that their mood, attitude, etc. severely shifts in a matter of minutes or hours.

ALAS, I have none of the classic celiac disease symptoms, but have started to think that I might be in very early stages. It would certainly explain some of the other health problems.
