A whole lot of nations celebrate this sort of holiday, which has absolutely zero to do with any religion. These celebrations tend to be tied with seasons either directly (see Midsummer celebrations) or indirectly (see harvest festivals).

The only reason why some of these celebrations are tied to specific religions is due to the fact that these religions have been trying to hijack them in order to take advantage of their popularity. Christians tried to pin Jesus' birthday on December 25th to hijack the popularity winter festivals had with pagan nations, and christians tried to pin Jesus' death on the spring equinox.

This populist flexibility displayed by religions to hijack popular events is nothing new. For example, christianity, although a monoteistic religion, in some parts of the globe focuses on christian saints to try to hijack a people's pagan origins, replacing their pagan gods with saints who are somehow in charge of some specific aspect of life and nature. As these pagan gods tend to be female, the catholic church has abused the figure of Mary, mother of Jesus, as a generic substitute for any local pagan female deity, through the "our lady of X" label. Therefore, some local roman catholic churces have been trying to pin some sort of saint on popular local celebrations, which leads to the catholic church to organize major celebrations in honour of minor saints that eclipse their own celebration of jesus christ's life.

So yeah, it's all a scam.

NutWrench: kd8our: EvilEgg: Easter->Ishtar->Isis Egyptian Goddess of Motherhood and Spring. Rabbits and eggs have jack shiat to do with Jesus but they are quite symbolic of birth and spring.

I always though it was celebrating the day Jesus found a rabbit, squeezed its ass and out popped eggs. Because the act was mildly homosexual the eggs came out rainbow colored with pink plastic grass and candy.

I always thought that was the day when Jesus rose from the grave, saw his shadow and that means there will be six more weeks of winter.

They've been atheists ever since.

You told them religion was for stupid people, and they've stayed away because they don't want Daddy to think they are stupid, not because of any thought or consideration on their part.  By teaching them that certain ideas are associated with the Undesirable Other, what you've taught them is tribalism at best and bigotry at worst.  I see no reason to be proud.

What is this "Spring Festival" they are speaking of?  Today is New Years Eve!

As for the toilet paper issue--mostly it's bring-your-own.  It's common to find someone selling little packets of toilet paper outside larger toilets, though.

I hope you also taught your kids that sin and salvation is something all of us have in common.  Rich and poor, young and old, black and white and Chinese, all of humanity together shares the same experience and receive equally God's offer of salvation.

Previous snake years played host to the 9/11 attacks (2001), the crushing of the 1989 Tiananmen protests, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the stock market collapse in 1929. What evil do they have planned for us this time?

I'm pretty sure the English Easter comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre. Bede wrote that her spring festivals had been replaced by the Christian celebration very quickly.

I liked fireworks until I moved to China.   The constant *pop* *pop* is novel for about a day, then it continues for a week during spring fest.  After that, every time a new noodle stand opens on the corner, someone moves into a new apartment, new construction begins on a hut, etc. more fireworks. It gets old quick.

While I've never lived there I have spent a decent amount of time there.  The fireworks have never particularly bothered me, although they came as quite a shock once.  I'm used to the eternal pops but our hotel room suddenly went bright.  Supposedly it was a wedding, they were shooting the smaller pro stuff and they were bursting about one block away and at the height of our room.

Yes, I know that part.  It's the "Ishtar" etymology that I find questionable.  The Anglo-Saxons had no contact with Mesopotamians that I know of, and their languages belong to separate family trees.

Sorry, my intent there was to point out that because we know that Easter comes from Eostre, it's not likely that Ishtar is related at all - I just didn't bring it all the way home. (You'd have been more impressed if you hadn't known about Eostre.)
