So do the Christians, they're just not smart enough to realize it.

Easter->Ishtar->Isis Egyptian Goddess of Motherhood and Spring.  Rabbits and eggs have jack shiat to do with Jesus but they are quite symbolic of birth and spring.

Is this where we remind people that Christmas is really a Pagen holiday?

No, it's where we remind people they don't know how to spell.

Pray for it or something. I know it at least involves talking blindly to your hands or whatever.

Now that we have heard from the spelling Nazi, do you have something to add to the conversation?

Didn't think so.

Well it's not like Chinese culture is exactly atheistic.  The immanent creative force isn't called "God," it's Heaven.  Heaven isn't emotional and personal like the Western idea of God, but it fits the same niche, the "all-powerful thing at the heart of it all" niche that seems programmed into the human brain.

hmm.... so lemme get this straight.

zombie jesus rose from the dead and that's why we're spota member the day. the whole spring fertility thing celebrated all over the world today and in the xtian world before jebus came around is all sinful satany stuff.

AND! jesus was born during the winter solstice time, another time of traditonal festivals and stuff. how convenient!

i swear you'd think this whole thing was done on purpose.

No, that's extremely relevant to the conversation we're having.  It may not be the conversation you want to have, but it's clearly the conversation we ARE having and therefore it's relevant.

uhhh no... it is put there by the parents.

my kids have no sense of  "all-powerful thing at the heart of it all" .

there is a NEED for humans to follow the Alpha being.. and we all instinctively look towards someone bigger/stronger/faster/better to lead us.
this is why we idolise athletes/actors/performers,  because they are 'better' than us and we want to follow them.

Sure, Christians are just European pagans with the serial numbers filed off, but I kind of like that about us.  Gives us roots.  But then I really like history, so I'd like Christmas trees less if they had no ancient element to them.

hubiestubert: The Chinese have plenty of gods.

Yeah, but they're "gods" in the Pagan sense, they're not the same thing as Allah or Heaven.  It's like when the Greeks had an entire pantheon, but philosophers were still talking about "God" in the singular, meaning not a superhero with lightning bolts, but The Omnipotent Cosmic Thing that Always Is.  It's rough to talk about because both concepts use the same word.

The toilet paper quantity was fine, but for some reason (at least in the business I was in) there was only one dispenser.  It was by the door, so if you forgot to grab some one your way into the stall you were screwed.

/That being said, I tried to avoid pooping anywhere but at the hotel where I had an American toilet.

We can choose to worship someone with admirable qualities. Yet reasonably decent people voluntarily believe in an Alpha being who happens to be a violent, lying, small-minded asshole. It's strange.

From my similar experiences, those guys would usually just say they were Christian to avoid such situations.

They've been atheists ever since.

The Chinese were just more organized when it came to their gods. The Celestial Bureaucracy even regulated the numerous Chinese Hells. With so many gods, both in the Celestial Bureaucracy and the locals, plus to one's ancestors, it's a tangled mish-mash of duties and responsibilities, so it's natural that festivals like this sort of became somewhat generic events, so you can have all your bases covered. Modern China may not be looking to the Mandate of Heaven, but the traditions still remain.

It's not the amount of toilet paper, it's the quality of water they use to cook the food.

And you can forget about drying your hands with paper towels.

The best thing is to pick a religion that doesn't have an army of middle-men standing between you and god.
Relying on other people to tell you what god wants is never a good idea.

I don't find it useful to insult the intelligence of people with whom I disagree. I know plenty of smart Christians. Their problem is a severe case of cognitive dissonance, not a lack of intellect.

I always though it was celebrating the day Jesus found a rabbit, squeezed its ass and out popped eggs. Because the act was mildly homosexual the eggs came out rainbow colored with pink plastic grass and candy.

I always thought that was the day when Jesus rose from the grave, saw his shadow and that means there will be six more weeks of winter.
