aevorea: Ker_Thwap: Central NH, 16 inches since Friday morning.  A two foot drift at the front door, three feet of plow crap at the road.  Shoveled half of the 40' driveway, will get the other half after breakfast. The roads look good, so I'm going skiing in the powder!

Idiot Governor with her state of emergency; she should have been telling people to drive carefully to the mountains, as our state of the art snow plowing service is one the job.

Has it stopped snowing where you are? Because it's still coming down far too fast and the wind is far too gusty for me to even think about shoveling (SE NH).

Tree country here, so windy, but no huge drifts, just the occasional gust.  I'll expect some drifts on the roads of course.  Just a light snow now, doubt there will be more than a few inches today.  It's supposed to get warmer over the next few days, shovel now or it's going to get heavy.

Let the wind do some of that shovelling for you!  You might end up with some big snowdrifts, but that only means that the snow is very light and fluffy.

If your luck is anything like mine, to ensure that the snowplow comes by to plow your street, start your shovelling NOW, and by the time you get to the end the plow will show up and dump a 2 foot wide snowbank right at the bottom of the driveway.  And not the fluffy stuff.

The plow has driven by a few times already since 7AM. I'm dreading shoveling the top of the driveway (the driveway is angled down from the road...) in a few hours.

Weird thought having to shovel drive ways, our snow generally melts in a day or two. Just seems as strange as snowshoes that's all.

I'm new to New England so I've never tried snowshoes.

There is supposed to be a guy who 'plows' the apartment complex's driveway, but the dude's pretty old and only has a little Bobcat. Plus, Boyfriend has work (maybe, if they're open) this afternoon. Knowing my luck, as soon as I have carved a path out to the street for the car, work will call him and say that the office is closed.

Snowshoes aren't really a New England thing, unless you'll be carrying supplies along a trail in the woods.  Those old guys are pretty tough, they weren't raised sitting in front of video games.

True. I'm a part of the video game generation but I do try to keep myself reasonably fit.

It's OK, you could have just said lesbian model.

They're all awesome AWD cars, but you're putting on airs.  You have an Outback wagon.  It's OK.  I want one too.

Oh yea, driving that baby in the snow is sooo much fun.  We tried the Impreza and the Forester but weren't overly impressed with the ride. Then we tried the Outback and never looked back. Only shiatty thing is we were very limited in colour selection,
because we bought the car in the US right after the tsunami hit. We bought blue outside with the beige interior. Gets stained just looking at it.

25 inches here just outside of Boston, MA. Had to let the dog out this morning. Luckily, he's only an 8 pound Maltese. He walked right on top of the snow and did his business.  Went out to begin shoveling, and it's heavy, not light and fluffy. Have 4 foot drifts on my deck.

Cars are clean, thanks to the 70+ mph winds last night, but there is about 4-5 feet piled behind them. Waiting for my neighbor to get his lazy ass out and plow me out (he's paid to do so). Once he plows the left side of the driveway, i can move both cars to that side and he can plow the right side (luckily, i can park about six cars in my driveway)

Didn't lose power, thankfully. Spending the day ripping my collection of DVD's for my media server!

Well, in fairness, being Irish German and Japanese, I am perhaps a distillation of the three most cantankerous folks on the planet, but we are a fine and noble people, with a rich and cultured history, and great rhythm. As for pics, maybe later, when I dig out of this mess that the Snow Gods dumped on us. ;)

To: navysealdadI just got in from shoveling all of the Gorebull warming. There is over two feet in my little corner of Massachusetts. And as I was shoveling, the wind came up and whipped everything all around again...kind of cool, like a movie with a big roar and all this snow comin' at ya. Kind of like...winter?
The silly panic that began on Wednesday and culminated with Deval Patrick scratching his fascist itch and banning everyone from the roadways (essentially shutting down every business, reducing income, shortening paychecks and reducing tax revenue - Deval's favorite) is a recent phenomenon. It shows how sad we've become. Most people don't need to be told by Big Daddy Gubmint not to go sightseeing or traveling long distances in a blizzard. We used to be able to rely on the judgment of each person to use common sense when deciding to travel in bad weather. Another responsibility we've forfeited to Big Daddy Gubmint?

I'd post a picture of our 2.5 feet of snow and big drifts from WMass, but I cant figure out how to upload a photo from my harddrive. Bummer.
Is that even possible or do I have to link it to a URL somewhere? I need to figure this out if for no other reason than to post in the hockey threads.
BTW snow has stopped here in Franklin county. Wind is still nasty. Roads look clear and well plowed/salted.

11 inches, Passaic county nj.

Need folks advice.

I live on a culdesac. I'm right before the circle and this guy carmine bought the house across from me last summer. He owns an atv w/plow attachment and all winter he has done every driveway on the cul de sac. Without asking, he just figured it would make our lives easier. Now I moved in w/my dad here last summer, and I honestly don't know carmine or my of the other folks cause I work so much.

I think we Should get him a thank you gift. Just his help this morning (he was out there last night as well) saved meand my dad hours of backbreaking  shoveling. So what's appropriate here? Scotch? A case of beer or some wine? A gc to hoe depot?

this is true.
similarly
sandy hook shooting was regional news
Aurora shootings were local news
Dorner shooting is a local shooting.
casey anthony ...
terry Schiavo was an uninteresting brain dead case

yah
We really need to get rid of 24hr "news".
The only things that they are allowed to report are:
crimes which cover 3 states or more
weather 3 states or more
wars
general national elections (state primaries in general elections should only be reported locally)
other things like that

/yes, some I am serious, some are completely sarcastic
/if the victims are on the talk show circuit, the story should be banned from national coverage

Agree. We have a neighbor like that. He is retired and very friendly and keeps active. Whenever we get a snow storm he'll come by with his plow and clear out our driveway as well as several other neighbors. Refuses to take money or gifts directly from folks, he says it is his version of "playing in the snow". We've gotten to know his (and his wife's)  hobbies are so they get appropriate gift cards left anonymously in their mailbox.

As a meteorologist... farking THIS.

Only about 4 inches back home as expected, but as I'm in Florida, I'm drawing a great amount of ire from family members. Their icy glares through the Internet are generating a nice cool breeze in which to enjoy my cocktail.
