As a Canadian, I am proud to say that I am now hopelessly stuck in a drift with my tires off the ground. WOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEE!

2013-02-09 07:17:27 AM
The Weather Channel's unilateral "naming" of winter storms has the same fishy stink of a "Name-A-Star" kit. No validity outside of the company that declares it.

NH/MA border here. The local news website claims that we're at a total of 23 inches, but no way in hell am I going outside right now to confirm it - it's still snowing and the wind is gusting loudly enough to freak out the cat. The storm is supposed to last another five hours and dump an inch per hour.

What I can confirm is that the snow is level with the bottom of my windowsill (I live in the 'basement' apartment of my building so half of the apartment is below ground level). And I can't discern the building's exterior steps from the snow.

Boyfriend supposedly has work this afternoon. I wonder if the car can levitate out of our parking lot and onto the (plowed) roads?

2013-02-09 07:19:13 AM
There's probably 18 inches outside. Not looking forward to shoveling. Or losing a toddler in the snow. So, so glad we did not lose power (at one point last night 89% of the town was black).

/se ct
//think maybe 2% of town is really black.:( soulless here.

Any chance you're the one farkette who likes children?

Because if so I'll pay you're travel expenses plus free room and board next expected snowstorm if you wouldn't mind entertaining an almost 4 yr old goin on 24 sarcastic ball buster for a few hours on a snow day when trapped in the house. We have over two feet here in central Connecticut. The drifts, though, are easily approaching four to five feet.

It is pancakes and snowshoeing this morning.

Stay safe everyone.

I just got done with a video chat with my sister who lives outside of New Haven CT. I shiat you not, there was 3 feet of snow out there. Her car was buried halfway up the windows on the windward side of the car and her neighbours cars are completely under snow. And one of the houses across the street from her had snow up to the top of the front door (drifts like crazy).

And by contrast it's 40F and sunny here in England.

Apparently, some insurance companies charge you a higher deductible for 'named storms' http://www.agordon.com/blog/bid/163479/Wind-Deductible-vs-Hurricane-v s -Named-Storm-Deductible and this could be in play for winter storms, thanks to the Weather Channel.

I wish the Weather Channel would stop naming storms. NOAA and NWS names the hurricanes for a reason. From what I understand, they are only naming every storm to get more viewers. Anyone know differently?

Whoops, that link was useless. The important thing to know is that named storm deductibles are usually much higher than other policy deductibles.

I just took a stroll outside (got as far as the porch) and it looks like 20-24" so far with some five or six foot drifts just outside of Boston. Still snowing at a good clip and wind is still whipping around. There will be no shoveling until a plow actually comes up my street.

It's your official Winter Storm Nemo discussion thread (w/link to live cam)

Subby needs to get slapped for using that. I'm specifically avoiding the Weather Channel because of their stupid naming system for winter storms.

Midcoast Maine here - 3' drifts outside the house. No trees down and we still have power... I'm sure that will change soon. We're going to be getting this storm well into tonight.

I'm glad I didn't go to work yesterday. That 20-car pileup in Maine is along my normal route to work. According to the local news, there is already 33" of snow in Gorham where I work. There was a 70 mph wind gust recorded last night around bedtime. We're going to all get another 6" at least before its over.

My sentiment exactly.  It's farking SNOW.  You will probably have to shovel your driveway and drive slowly and carefully for a while, but it's not going to KILL you.

You might be unable to drive very far over the weekend, but man up, America.  Throw on a jacket, put on some warm boots (double up on your socks), dress in layers and go outside and enjoy it.

It's not a natural disaster, it's a goddamn snowstorm.  You won't be trapped in your house, having to resort to cannibalism to survive.

And the only people stupid enough to stay outside during the full brunt of a snowstorm are TV reporters.

Central NH, 16 inches since Friday morning.  A two foot drift at the front door, three feet of plow crap at the road.  Shoveled half of the 40' driveway, will get the other half after breakfast. The roads look good, so I'm going skiing in the powder!

Idiot Governor with her state of emergency; she should have been telling people to drive carefully to the mountains, as our state of the art snow plowing service is one the job.

Here in OC the beaches open at 5 for surfers but Ruby's doesn't open until 7 so I'll probably put on some shorts and thongs and grab breakfast at the pier. What's this snow stuff you were referring to subby?

Has it stopped snowing where you are? Because it's still coming down far too fast and the wind is far too gusty for me to even think about shoveling (SE NH).

Let the wind do some of that shovelling for you!  You might end up with some big snowdrifts, but that only means that the snow is very light and fluffy.

If your luck is anything like mine, to ensure that the snowplow comes by to plow your street, start your shovelling NOW, and by the time you get to the end the plow will show up and dump a 2 foot wide snowbank right at the bottom of the driveway.  And not the fluffy stuff.

The plow has driven by a few times already since 7AM. I'm dreading shoveling the top of the driveway (the driveway is angled down from the road...) in a few hours.

Weird thought having to shovel drive ways, our snow generally melts in a day or two. Just seems as strange as snowshoes that's all.
