We've got about 20" already.  Ran the snowblower over the driveway once already and it didn't do much good.  Weather.com says we're looking at another 12" or so before it's done.

So far we still have power.  Hopefully it holds out.

To Ted@WCSH6: Tip for news story involving your Portland Towercam

Dear sir,

I am a native Mainer, currently living in Denver. I have been hearing about Winter Storm Nemo on your website for a couple of days now, corresponding with my friends back home and watching the storm roll in on your Towercam. Actually, I have been watching for most of the day. It's a beautiful shot of the city, really makes me homesick. Thank you for letting me watch the blizzard in Maine from my computer in Denver.

I also submitted the link to the Towercam to Fark.com. Here is the link to the fark.com discussion thread: http://www.fark.com/comments/7583059/How-much-snow-are-you-getting-How -drunk-do-you-have-to-get-to-shovel-Can-we-hope-for-no-work-on-Monday- Its-your-official-Winter-Storm-Nemo-discussion-thread-wlink-to-live-ca m

Fark.com: Satirical views on interesting, bizarre and amusing stories, submitted by a community of millions of news junkies, with regular Photoshop contests.

The link will post to the main page of Fark sometime around 3 AM EST. You can expect several thousand clicks to your Towercam page.

I am an active member of Fark with 675 approved submissions and am projected to be on the top 100 Submitters Of All Time list in a month, or so. I have been a news junkie for over 30 years and spend lots of time in my Google Reader queue. I am also looking for part-time journalistic type work. Please contact me with any possible opportunity.

Sounds like a story to me.

You can contact me at:

And thanks again for the awesome cam!

TED RESPONDS!!!

Thanks for the email. Not to make you more homesick, but we will be streaming 8 straight hours of Storm Center coverage beginning at 5am Eastern Time online if you want to watch more of our coverage.

Oh well, I tried.

Meh, maybe an inch, two at most. No pity for the rest of you farkers until you hit 38".

2013-02-09 01:30:09 AM
Stupid Pacific coast. Arizona is only getting a dusting unless you live above 7,000 feet. We're expecting six inches. It's like bad porno here.

2013-02-09 01:48:51 AM
Getting nothing here.  I wish it would snow real good here to keep the locals off the road and I can go out and enjoy some driving in the snow.  Alas, we get an 3/4 of an inch and everyone panics but still tries to go places whether or not they can handle the drive.  Stupid Virginia.  I think next storm I'm going to volunteer to shovel, as opposed to having to deal with no shoveling done, but enough salt put down on the sidewalks (after the snow stopped) for several storms, making walking in the grass on the snow and ice a million times safer.

I'll probably call my dad tomorrow to see how many times he has to threaten my brother to get any shoveling done.

DanZero: Just because the dumb Weather Channel is naming winter storms doesn't mean the rest of the world has to.

It's been like spring in Colorado.  We're supposed to get some snow tomorrow evening, I hear.  Nothing like what the NE is getting.  I'm jealous.

2013-02-09 03:20:13 AM
Still snowing here.  At least it looks like it's still snowing.  Wind's kicking up quite a bit, and I ain't getting pants on to take a walk outside and check the difference between blowing snow and falling snow.

2013-02-09 03:23:38 AM
I'm in coastal New Hampshire, and prepared for the storm by storing water, making a nice big pot of chowder, bringing in firewood,  checking the generator, etc.  My neighbors did too, since our neighborhood usually has a blackout that lasts for days.

Now I'm expecting everything to be fine, simply because we're ready for the worst.  As of now, we still seem to have just less than a foot of snow.

No snow here in San Diego, big surprise, right? BUT! We did have an inch and a half of ice, on a freeway on a nice slope; cars were seen sliding backwards down the hill. There was hail in the coastal areas which is very uncommon.

I'm near Oak Park(Hanson stadium) and some people didn't shovel and walking just down the street is slippery. That slushy snow on Thursday was heavy as shiat. I must have removed from a 60'x25" path(front and back) about 200-250lb of slush

I'm stuck in the middle of it in BFE, MA. I'm actually still at work and I was supposed to leave at 1am to go to a  hotel 1/2 mile away to stay for the night. The local roads haven't been plowed in a while and the parking lot was up to 1 1/4ft of snow at one point. Plow trucks drove through the parking lot about 1/2 hour ago and it's already back up to 5". Visibility is nil.

the opposite of charity is justice: Getting a little irked at the non-stop coverage on cable news.  A regional snowstorm is not national news just because it happens where the talking heads happen to reside.

You mean a regional snowstorm where a major hub for overseas flights is? I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Oh and grow up.

I was wondering why on earth someone would go shovel the 401.  The driving skills on that highway are bad (particularly in that particular area of Toronto) on a clear summer day with the sun shining and birds chirping.  Took me 3 hours to get from the airport to Ajax on Thursday, and there was just a little bit of snow and no accidents.  I thought there would be at least one car gloriously aflame.

One snowflake = standstill.

Evenbiggerknickers: Meanwhile in Canada, motorists attempt to shovel the on-ramp to the 401, near Toronto

[i.imgur.com image 704x480]

I was in that, it was pretty fun actually. What happened is the snowplows going along the highway would create a huge wall of snow blocking the on/off ramps. Same thing was happening along a bunch of exits I drove past, I LMAO'd at some people trying to dig out a GO bus. Later, I got to do a U-turn on the ramp from the Eastbound 401 to the 404/DVP.

NH/MA border here. The local news website claims that we're at a total of 23 inches, but no way in hell am I going outside right now to confirm it - it's still snowing and the wind is gusting loudly enough to freak out the cat. The storm is supposed to last another five hours and dump an inch per hour.

What I can confirm is that the snow is level with the bottom of my windowsill (I live in the 'basement' apartment of my building so half of the apartment is below ground level). And I can't discern the building's exterior steps from the snow.

Boyfriend supposedly has work this afternoon. I wonder if the car can levitate out of our parking lot and onto the (plowed) roads?

2013-02-09 07:19:13 AM
There's probably 18 inches outside. Not looking forward to shoveling. Or losing a toddler in the snow. So, so glad we did not lose power (at one point last night 89% of the town was black).

I just got done with a video chat with my sister who lives outside of New Haven CT. I shiat you not, there was 3 feet of snow out there. Her car was buried halfway up the windows on the windward side of the car and her neighbours cars are completely under snow. And one of the houses across the street from her had snow up to the top of the front door (drifts like crazy).

And by contrast it's 40F and sunny here in England.

Subby needs to get slapped for using that. I'm specifically avoiding the Weather Channel because of their stupid naming system for winter storms.

Midcoast Maine here - 3' drifts outside the house. No trees down and we still have power... I'm sure that will change soon. We're going to be getting this storm well into tonight.

I'm glad I didn't go to work yesterday. That 20-car pileup in Maine is along my normal route to work. According to the local news, there is already 33" of snow in Gorham where I work. There was a 70 mph wind gust recorded last night around bedtime. We're going to all get another 6" at least before its over.

My sentiment exactly.  It's farking SNOW.  You will probably have to shovel your driveway and drive slowly and carefully for a while, but it's not going to KILL you.

You might be unable to drive very far over the weekend, but man up, America.  Throw on a jacket, put on some warm boots (double up on your socks), dress in layers and go outside and enjoy it.

It's not a natural disaster, it's a goddamn snowstorm.  You won't be trapped in your house, having to resort to cannibalism to survive.

Let the wind do some of that shovelling for you!  You might end up with some big snowdrifts, but that only means that the snow is very light and fluffy.

If your luck is anything like mine, to ensure that the snowplow comes by to plow your street, start your shovelling NOW, and by the time you get to the end the plow will show up and dump a 2 foot wide snowbank right at the bottom of the driveway.  And not the fluffy stuff.

Tree country here, so windy, but no huge drifts, just the occasional gust.  I'll expect some drifts on the roads of course.  Just a light snow now, doubt there will be more than a few inches today.  It's supposed to get warmer over the next few days, shovel now or it's going to get heavy.

I'm new to New England so I've never tried snowshoes.

There is supposed to be a guy who 'plows' the apartment complex's driveway, but the dude's pretty old and only has a little Bobcat. Plus, Boyfriend has work (maybe, if they're open) this afternoon. Snowshoes aren't really a New England thing, unless you'll be carrying supplies along a trail in the woods.  Those old guys are pretty tough, they weren't raised sitting in front of video games.

aevorea: tinfoil-hat maggie: aevorea: jakomo002: aevorea: Has it stopped snowing where you are? Because it's still coming down far too fast and the wind is far too gusty for me to even think about shoveling (SE NH).

The plow has driven by a few times already since 7AM. I'm dreading shoveling the top of the driveway (the driveway is angled down from the road...) in a few hours.

They're all awesome AWD cars, but you're putting on airs.  You have an Outback wagon.  It's OK.  I want one too.

Oh yea, driving that baby in the snow is sooo much fun.  We tried the Impreza and the Forester but weren't overly impressed with the ride. Then we tried the Outback and never looked back. Only shiatty thing is we were very limited in colour selection,
because we bought the car in the US right after the tsunami hit. We bought blue outside with the beige interior. Gets stained just looking at it.

25 inches here just outside of Boston, MA. Had to let the dog out this morning. Luckily, he's only an 8 pound Maltese. He walked right on top of the snow and did his business.  Went out to begin shoveling, and it's heavy, not light and fluffy. Have 4 foot drifts on my deck.

Cars are clean, thanks to the 70+ mph winds last night, but there is about 4-5 feet piled behind them. Waiting for my neighbor to get his lazy ass out and plow me out (he's paid to do so). Once he plows the left side of the driveway, i can move both cars to that side and he can plow the right side (luckily, i can park about six cars in my driveway)

Didn't lose power, thankfully. Spending the day ripping my collection of DVD's for my media server!

To: navysealdadI just got in from shoveling all of the Gorebull warming. There is over two feet in my little corner of Massachusetts. And as I was shoveling, the wind came up and whipped everything all around again...kind of cool, like a movie with a big roar and all this snow comin' at ya. Kind of like...winter?
The silly panic that began on Wednesday and culminated with Deval Patrick scratching his fascist itch and banning everyone from the roadways (essentially shutting down every business, reducing income, shortening paychecks and reducing tax revenue - Deval's favorite) is a recent phenomenon. It shows how sad we've become. Most people don't need to be told by Big Daddy Gubmint not to go sightseeing or traveling long distances in a blizzard. We used to be able to rely on the judgment of each person to use common sense when deciding to travel in bad weather. Another responsibility we've forfeited to Big Daddy Gubmint?

Is that even possible or do I have to link it to a URL somewhere? I need to figure this out if for no other reason than to post in the hockey threads.
BTW snow has stopped here in Franklin county. Wind is still nasty. Roads look clear and well plowed/salted.

11 inches, Passaic county nj.

Need folks advice.

I live on a culdesac. I'm right before the circle and this guy carmine bought the house across from me last summer. He owns an atv w/plow attachment and all winter he has done every driveway on the cul de sac. Without asking, he just figured it would make our lives easier. Now I moved in w/my dad here last summer, and I honestly don't know carmine or my of the other folks cause I work so much.

I think we Should get him a thank you gift. Just his help this morning (he was out there last night as well) saved meand my dad hours of backbreaking  shoveling. So what's appropriate here? Scotch? A case of beer or some wine? A gc to hoe depot?

The only things that they are allowed to report are:
crimes which cover 3 states or more
weather 3 states or more
wars
general national elections (state primaries in general elections should only be reported locally)
other things like that

/yes, some I am serious, some are completely sarcastic
/if the victims are on the talk show circuit, the story should be banned from national coverage

Agree. We have a neighbor like that. He is retired and very friendly and keeps active. Whenever we get a snow storm he'll come by with his plow and clear out our driveway as well as several other neighbors. Refuses to take money or gifts directly from folks, he says it is his version of "playing in the snow". We've gotten to know his (and his wife's)  hobbies are so they get appropriate gift cards left anonymously in their mailbox.

Where I am on the coast we didn't get a whole lot (10-15cm), although there are some decent drifts.  Seems to be turning into ice rain now, which sucks.

I have all sorts of 1st world blessings I can count

(1) Power stayed on through the night and the sun's out
(2) Packies (liquor stores) were closed when they let me out of work last night just before
the 4 PM ultimatum so I was 'forced' to crack open the small gift bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue
that I'd been saving.
(3) Landlord just plowed the driveway, I only have to dig my own car out. I cowered in my apt.
while he plowed as he's apt to recruit me during his projects when he sees me. I was a cheerful
unpaid landscaper/gardener/driveway specialist from age 9-19 and there's a reason why I rent as
an adult.

It's a good day. I'm going to trudge over to the local packie and load up. Enjoy!

Ya, according to a friend in the know, Dartmouth won't be getting it all back until Wednesday, probably with our street being last, since there's a big ol' pine on the lines about a half mile up and another smaller dead tree a few houses down from me....

That sucks... Luckily, we live near a hospital, so we're usually one of the first areas to get power back on.

Street is still a mess, though. My driveway became one giant 6 foot snow drift. Took me and my sister three hours to clear it out.
