people with a garage full of junk that they're never going to do anything with but can't bear to get rid of because "I might need that some day."

buttery_shame_cave: we had this discussion, my wife and i, where i talked about my plans for the garage when we finally purchase.

she was astonished that i wasn't going to let her just take over the garage with storage, that i was, in fact, going to allow her very limited storage space in it.

-_-

That sounds like a healthy relationship....

City of Vaughn asks a very reasonable question.

If you have to leave your automobiles outside in severe weather because you have too much stuff in your garage, you have too f*ckin' much stuff.

People with a shop in their garage?

Land Ark: I often think that myself - which is pretty ironic since I have to park 3 cars outside my 2 car garage. But I assume most people aren't car hoarders like me.

Hmm, an old Nash Metropolitan tarped under the back deck, a 53 GMC in the back yard, and in the driveway another 53 GMC, a camper, and a pair of VW syncros with one being the GL . The two car garage just barely has room for one vehicle. The rest is filled with tools and gear. And when I say tools I mean stuff like a bandsaw, drill press, air compressor, etc... Unless you build a dedicated shop anybody who has that kind of gear keeps it in their garage.

Most people have hobbies and if those hobbies take up much space there is a good chance they are going in the garage.

You know what, architects need to just flat out start designing houses with hobby rooms. Give it a really big garage style external door, lots of overhead lighting, VERY good sound insulation, and electrical outlets everywhere.

People need one of these: a house with a five-car garage. This is not photoshopped, it's from a Florida (of course) community where the builder offers houses with HUGE garages.

Of course, my idea of a dream home is a one-bedroom efficiency with a 10-car garage.

Doesn't matter it's a festival of McMansions and 1800sq ft McMansion jrs.  The whole place is not more that 25 year old subdivisions, that all look exactly the same... Other than the size of the boulevard trees.

Just wanted to say if you live in the suburbs, you should park your car in your garage or driveway- NOT IN THE STREET- the street is for moving traffic, and is not your personal parking lot.

i dont know about where you are, but in NYC they are really reluctant to close schools, since it means denying lunch to many kids from whom thats their best meal of the day.

If you keep the car in the driveway, that's 10 less feet of snow you have to dig out in the morning.

I would intentionally move my car OUT of the garage in preparation of a big storm.

rest of the house is hers to do with as she pleases for storage, so long as it's not unreasonable. as per agreements made before we wed, anywhere where mechanical work is done, or anything otherwise messy, is mine, as are the vehicles and related support equipment.

apparently she did not, before that conversation, really consider a garage as a place where mechanical work happens, nor as a place where a vehicle goes. her parents had a garage that was used so heavily for storage that it was eventually walled shut and considered one more in an endless nightmare of closets and storage her packrat parents consigned stuff to.  the premarital agreements were made because my wife had naescent packrat tendencies of the negative kind(squirreling away nearly everything instead of things that could be justified useful later), and i did NOT want to end up like her folks. accordingly, i was not going to let the garage become her personal warehouse.

we're both alpha-type personalities and our discussions tend to look pretty unhealthy from an outside point of view because it's a lot of head-butting, dueling, and there are a lot of very authoritative conditions thrown around, but oddly, we've outlasted many of our peers and are astonishingly happy.

Luse: 5 minutes to clear off door and a spot on each window, reverse car to my curb, brush off snow in street where snowplow picks it up. Put car in garage to warm up and finish melting.
Of course I COULD park in the garage and have 45 minutes of back breaking work to do. Hmmm....decisions.

/but I love the ignorant smug

Tell us you are not an ignorant ass that clears a 6 inch "window" of snow from their windshield back window, gets in the car and drives off.

An on-street parking space takes less area than an off-street space. Allowing on-street parking with no curb cuts can result in superior land use in densely populated areas.

People that park their cars...blocking the sidewalk...are farking self-centered aholes. My neighborhood is full of aswipes that have a 3 bedroom home, a garage, and 5 cars and park none of those cars in their garage. Instead they park their cars on the sidewalk so when I walk my dog we have to detour into the street. Some cars gonna be getting keyed!!!!

I remember listening to somebody say that America is the only country in the world were people will store useless junk in their garage and leave a $30,000 piece of equipment outside. Guess he was wrong, Canadians do it also.

I have such a garage and a four-car driveway.  There's a nice four-car driveway in front of it.  There are 3 bikes slumbering in the garage, the 3 cars stay outside... in the driveway... so, you know, not in the way of municipal snowplows.

Has the city of Vaughan called in the army yet ?

/No such idiots where I live.
//In fact, there are many idiots here, just in a different way.

Did I mention I just finished my shift at the department of redundancies department ?

It isn't that bad. I have a 2 car garage. I also have 2 kids and the girlfriend has two kids. After tools, lawn care stuff, bikes, scooters, outside toys, sports equipment etc. we park in the driveway. But we don't get snow here all that often or all that bad.

If you own a curb cut you should be forbidden from parking on or near your street.
