I think I'd pay about anything to see the look on this guys face the first time he tried it, and the cashier started opening the rolls of pennies.

when i was younger and, well, we were never lacking for food, clothes, or a house, or as the cliche goes, love, but my parents.....we weren't exactly well off.  so i'd save up pennies and roll them up for money.  and then of course blow that princely sum of, you know, $6.50 in quarters on a thirstbuster, a candy bar, then blow the rest on a 3 hours "Ghosts 'N' Goblins" marathon.

You know what would have made that story funnier?

Canadian pennies.

I went through a couple rolls of pennies to see if there were any collectible coins in there. There wasn't much of value, but there was a 2 cent Euro coin. I didn't know Europeans had cents. You know, maybe we were a bit hasty to junk the penny. A two cent coin would have solved the problem of pennies costing 1.6 cents to make, and they could have simply switched to cheaper alloy, making the metal value of the tuppence even lower if wished.

Then again, there are billions of pennies in circulation and penny jars and it's going to be a long, long, long time before they all get turned in to be melted down or collected by amateur coin collectors. A penny can last 25 years in circulation if you don't throw it in puddles.

Also, what about American pennies? Do they just melt them down with the rest or will Canadians circulate American pennies forever more? Doesn't cost us anything to make 'em!

Maybe we could  just switch to the Amero one coin at a time. That way, dumb conservative conspiracy theorists won't catch on until we do away with the Canadian dollar and pesos altogether.

I should send Mexico a note about this idea. We can probably go far on Euros, British pennies, American pennies and the odd Dutch coin. They're all exactly the same size and almost impossible to tell apart without looking.
