(Fox News)   The ACLU is at it again: suing a public school in Ohio, claiming that the portrait of a historical figure that hangs in the school's entranceway is some sort of secret sectarian religious message. The historical figure? Okay, it's Jesus, but still..,   (foxnews.com ) divider line

Jesus would have hung a portrait of himself.

If it were Shiva, would people have complained?

The institute said the portrait has been in place for some 65 years, apparently without anyone complaining about it.
Hiram Sasser, director of litigation for Liberty Institute, said Thursday the lawsuit was premature.

I'm fine with it staying up, as long as every other religion gets a picture of their prophet or deity. For the atheists, just put a blank frame (or a picture of FSM).

2013-02-08 03:45:37 PM
The suit follows complaints by both groups to school officials, and was filed on behalf of three plaintiffs, identified only as "Sam Doe."

That's unnecessarily confusing.

One is a student at Jackson Middle School; the other two are parents with children who attend the school.

...so Sam is the kid and his parents? Am I releasing classified info here?

Anyway this

"It's obviously a delicate balance," he said.

is what you'd expect from the school's lawyers, but I'm afraid there's nothing delicate going on here. Gov may not run a religious school, and "We've gotten away with it for 65 years" isn't a serious excuse. The balance goes like this: Either put up a pic of Our Magnificent Lord Satan, and Vishnu, and FSM, and Mohammed (;) or take Jesus down.

Oh sure, complain about Jesus but a portrait of Mohammed is just fine...

Jesus is best known for hanging around.  It's what made him so famous.

Not trolling here, but is Jesus really a historical figure if there aren't any non-biblical sources to indicate his existence?

Why is this any different than hanging a portrait of Odin, Zeus or Osiris? We should be teaching mythology, not hiding it.

As a Buddhist, I demand that they put up a picture of the Buddah, and then ritually destroy it. And then put another one up, etc.

That was my first thought. It's not a very attractive painting, and also the location is really weird. You don't hang a picture in a stairwell, people.

Fine, we'll take down the painting of Jesus, and replace it with something less offensive.  Do you like fine art?  OK, we'll throw up a copy of Courbet's L'Origine du Monde, and call it a day.

I doubt the Muslim's would go along with that.  And good luck finding enough wall space for all the Hindu deities.

I grew up with the same painting hanging in my living room, It was on the wall until the day I probated my dad's will and sold the house.  It's a crappy painting and is some place in my garage now.

He's a historical figure in that Zeus is a historical figure. Fictional characters from enduring popular cultural stories, poetry and the like are historical figures.

The ACLU goes about it the wrong way. They should sue so other deities are featured as well on that wall -- that way, the school would rather just remove the Jesus portrait on their own that having portraits of Buddha, Odin, Satan, a picture of a flame in lieu of Mohammed, Moses and John Smith on that wall as well.

IIRC, any depiction of him is forbidden ( at least with the Sunnis). Maybe a green flag would be more appropriate...

Could be dirt, or is more likely to be just really crappy. If it was up for 65 years, there would be some fading to it. Colors usually fade away instead of becoming darker unless there is a source of smoke/grease/pollution below it.

Isn't there historical precedence for putting Jesus over entryways (like tympanums, for instance)? Granted, a stairway is an odd extension, but makes some sense.

The Muslims are the wackiest about enforcing it, but many in the Abrahamic religions interpret portraits as idolatry.  That's why you only see a cross and not Jesus on it in most Protestant churches, and some of the more extreme branches refuse to do things like the Pledge of Allegiance.

In fairness, I think there are some Roman records regarding the execution of a Judean carpenter at around the time Jesus would have been crucified.  I don't think many historians doubt his existence---there are plenty of other historical figures about whom we only know from one or two sources.

The Puritans took it to the extreme. No crosses in any of their meetinghouses. They didn't have churches either.
