mongbiohazard: Young also complained that DRC and city government should have limited the number of Downtown coffee shops. "Where's my protection?" he said.

Wow, really? Capitalism much? You're supposed to compete, a-hole, that's how it works. How much do you want to bet he was born in to a well-off family and thinks he's supposed to succeed just because he's special? That's probably where the money to buy the coffee shop came from.

The sad thing is if he was a billionaire he'd probably get the protectionsist measures he wanted.

Because there would be a quid pro quo - said measures paid for by increased tax revenue and employment. That's why larger companies, working closely with local and state governments, sometimes get sweetheart deals.

That jackhole is no sweetheart.

Guess we will just have to get our gourmet cheeseburgers in a cup at some other coffee shop.

As someone who has direct experience with opening (and closing) coffee shops, I would like to say that this guy appears to be quite possibly the biggest idiot ever.

I mean, he literally did absolutely everything wrong and now he wants to whine about it?

AMERICA, or something.

Wow, your business failure couldn't have ANYTHING to do with your bad attitude?  Could it?  No.  No, that's not it.

scottydoesntknow: But he said he was only looking for a certain clientele - "not Starbucks-like people who have common interest in coffee. I don't want the McDonald's coffee drinker."

So he's not looking for "Starbucks-like people" which I guess means people who need a large variety and willing to pay for it or hipsters writing their future screenplay in the cafe. That knocks out about 50%. And he's not looking for the "McDonald's coffee drinker" which I guess means people who need to have a cup of coffee to function (that's me) and are willing to get fast-food coffee to satisfy that. That knocks out the other 50%.

Who exactly was the "clientele" you were going for?

Moron

Operating a business is about making a profit.  Chasing away a paying customers because they don't fit your the mold of your perfect customer is stupid.

That's funny, because a lot of us are stuck in the service industry thanks to the previous generations going "ME!ME!ME!"

This.

And a CSB:
I used to work in a bakery.  Very early job, for serious.  One day, I was at work, and the power went out.  Since there was no indication that it would come back on anytime soon, we locked up and went home.  Well, I went to Wildwood and got drunk.  I didn't come home until the next morning sometime.
It was then I found out that the bakery exploded!!!

What happened was, the owner had jury-rigged the gas shut off on the oven, so the gas remained on even though the power was out.  So, when they came in the next morning, they hit the electric ignition, and the oven, having been filling with gas all night, went BOOM!!!

How fortunate for me that I wasn't there.
//No one was killed, fortunately.

He's discovered that just starting a service-based business isn't enough to guarantee success - you have to start the right business, in the right place, at the right time, providing the right service to the right people.

If the comments are a useful indicator, he didn't know what the hell he was doing, and now blames everyone else for his failure.

add "AND WORK YOUR FARKING ASS OFF" to the mix, and you're spot on.

8am to 3pm? So....you wanted a customer base that was basically exactly like you: Doesn't rise very early, wants to lounge around and be unproductive while sipping overpriced hipster coffee type beverages, have a "friendly" shop owner to biatch to about how nobody in Racine was hiring philosophy majors, and, feeling "worn down" by about 2:30pm, call it a day.

Newsflash, assjack: every single successful business owner has not only taken a loss for the first couple years of operation, they are usually putting 60-70 hours a week into running their shop, which usually amounts to hours of operation+2 hours before and after to open up and close down. This guy reeks of entitlement (and I'm sure other redolent aromas) and without a doubt lacks the drive or desire to make a small business succeed. The fact that he blames anyone but himself for his failures couldn't be a better indicator of this situation.

Broktun: This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with a Free Market Economy. It is not the Government's role to limit entry to the market place, but to provide a market full of choices for the consumer. Then it is up to the consumer to decide which companies make it and fail, they do this through their economic choices. Obviously you did not provide a product and service combination that the public was willing to spend money on. Another example of the free enterprise system working!

Exactly, plus he's a jerk face.

Worst. Customers. Ever.

Took a few posts, but we're done.

I love it when American small business owners biatch that the monopoly they were promised didn't come through. "Competition? Nobody told me there'd be competition!"

Also, know thyself, Boss Barista: "Humans off Earth now" is my default setting, so "not cut out for retail" tends to follow that, even though I suspect I'm a lot easier on the eyes than Coffee Bluto here.

Honestly, I live in that city, and downtown sucks. It has seen its heyday a long time ago, but not now.

The problem with Downtown Racine is that nobody wants to drive through rundown northside, southside or uptown to get to it. Not when we can just go to Milwaukee.

I've lived there for 15+ years, I've actually gone to downtown a handful of times that were not related to me having to be on jury duty.

This is fake or the Onion, right?  No way a real person could be that retarded.  I mean:

Young also complained that DRC and city government should have limited the number of Downtown coffee shops. "Where's my protection?" he said.
